Is this in order of importance? If so Hank Williams is so, so, so too low. Hell one could argue, if it wasn't for Hank, there would be no Johnny Cash--and with no Cash, things would be quite different for the singer/songwriter crowd of your Dylans and such.

Editted to say... of course Hank did have a very, very short career. He doesn't have a huge ammount of work, but was significant. I'm also suprised to see Skynyrd on here. Sabbath also is too low.

Well of course the list sucks; it's from Rolling Stone

This seems to have no criteria. Is it influential bands? Or popular bands?

If it's influential why are U2 and springsteen so high?

If it's popular why is the Velvet Underground so high?

It seems maybe to be a list of bands which will be remembered. Which is totally arbitrary, and makes this list weird, because while people KNOW who Prince is, I don't think many people listen to him anymore (I do) while Miles Davis is an icon who will be remembered forever. Nine Inch Nails? I liked them when I was 13-14, but come ON! Their heyday was ONE ALBUM. And if it's Rock Icons, The Doors should be much higher, because take 'em or leave 'em, Morrisson's going to have a devoted following for a long time.

Which is just a wordy way of saying, what the hell is up with this list?

This is what the magazine says:

"An expert panel of musicians, industry figures, and critics, selected by the editors of Rolling Stone, was asked to pick, in order of preference, the twenty most significant artists of rock's first fifty years. The votes were tabulated according to a weighted point system overseen by the accounting firm Ernst & Young."

ELVIS COSTELLO NUMBER 80?

THIS DOES NOT COMPUTE!

Dammit, he's better than half the people in front of him.

The writeups on the "Immortals" themselves are good reads, actually, since they're by other artists. Of note, Kanye West writes about Dre, Elton John on Eminem, and Little Steven on Eric Clapton.

This is usually my thought on these lists. If you are willing to overlook the rankings, they can be enjoyable reads.

That said, I find it odd that Pink Floyd is nowhere to be found on this list.

I know someone who had the magazine, and got pissed off that Metallica wasn't on the list, and promptly threw it away. Just my little anecdote. I do think Michael Jackson should definitely be higher than Sam Cooke though. Do people even remember him now?

"Odd" is a pretty big understatement. Pink Floyd's absence from the list basically makes it worthless on that fact alone. Hell, I'm as big a fan of Radiohead as anyone, but for them to be ahead of Pink Floyd on such a list is laughable.
