Guest The Decadent Slacker Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 I've got a question: in your opinion, would the show have been better off had they let Bart, etc. age? A friend of mine was saying that he'd like the show much better if it'd let the characters actually age, because the storyline possibilities would be more varied & the characters could have been developed more naturally. I'm not sure if the show would have ran as long if it were done like that, but at the same time, but it would've been interesting. I'm just curious what people's thoughts are.
Guest LooneyTune Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 It would probably still be in the same boat, because even in real shows where characters age after 10 years, the writers run out of good ideas then start throwing anything at the wall to see what sticks. Edit: Speaking of poor episodes, right now the horrible "Real Skinner" episode is on FOX.
Placebo Effect Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 Last time I tried to watch The Simpsons period was last Thursday when the local channel played some episode where Homer had to fight a bear to reclaim his manhood. It was seriously awful on every level, and my friends and I couldn't make it past the second segment. I'd been advocating shutting it off since the first segment, but whatever. I've been afraid to watch it since then for fear I'll catch an old episode and weep over what the show has become. Yeah. Fat and the Furriest isn't too great of an episode. But if you didn't laugh at Homer's delusions, you lack humor perception. Hopefully they allow hotlinking.

In particular the gag about "this space reserved for DVDs" was awful. The one where Homer built his own battlebot wasn't at all funny either, but I'd seen it done much, much better when a friend of mine did it in a skit for an Efed, so I couldn't view it objectively.

They aged Bart and Lisa for an episode a few weeks ago, and it was awful. Especially since if the show moves forward more than a year, technology immediately moves ahead to near Futurama levels of wackiness.

Like when Lisa was president and Bart was...uh...a lazier, more useless version of Fry? Or completely different?
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 The Treehouse of Horror episode with the monkey's paw is quite awful.
Zetterberg is God Posted May 2, 2005 Report Posted May 2, 2005 I think the part that pisses me off the most is that producers like Al Jean continue to say in interviews that the new episodes are just as good as stuff from the past even though that's a complete crock. I laughed maybe once during the two episodes last night. The only really good episode they've done in recent years was Behind the Laughter.
ant_7000 Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 Im suprised that no one mentioned the 1800 house reality show episode, that shit was garbage.

The saving grace is when the guy on the radio says something like Homer is being held captive, and Homer says "Heh Heh...Wrong again Liberal Media"

Lord of The Curry Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 Monkey Paw was fuckin awesome. THE TURKEY'S A LITTLE DRY~!
Spaceman Spiff Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 "Soon, they will make a board with a nail so big, it will destroy them all!"
BorneAgain Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 ^ Brilliant stuff. I also laugh out loud whenever I hear this line. "Your superior intellect is no match for our puny weapons!"
Guest LooneyTune Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 Anyone who hates that Treehouse of Horror needs to be strung up by the balls and forced to watch every Simpsons episode from the last 6 years.
Open the Muggy Gate Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 Wasn't that the Treehouse of Horror where Burns put Homer's brain on his head and said "Look at me! I'm Davy Crockett!"?

King Cucaracha Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 There's still some watchable episodes in seasons 10 and 11. Some of them (Sunday, Cruddy Sunday and Saddlesore Galactica for example) are horrible. But there's some watchable enough ones and the odd decent gag. Season 12 is virtually unwatchable. A Tale Of Two Springfields is okay, but the rest are absolutely terrible. The tennis episode, the safari episode, The Computer Wore Menace Shoes, the one with the hobo, the one with the fake beginning that's 5 minutes leading to nothing. The only episodes I can remember seeing from the start of season 13 were the rap ones and Fat Man and Little Boy (where Bart starts making t-shirts) which weren't as bad as I expected. Infact, I thought the Fat Man and Little Boy one was quite good. Anyway, back to the previous discussion. Smithers- "Sir, you know what this means? He is alive." Mr Burns- "You're right Smithers. I guess I owe you a coke."

Clever format but the ending killed it.
