Boon Posted July 28, 2005 Report Posted July 28, 2005 facebook Are you familiar with this nonsense? It's absurd, the cult following that has emerged.
bob_barron Posted July 28, 2005 Report Posted July 28, 2005 I can't join b/c my college isn't facebooked. That's annoying
Your Paragon of Virtue Posted July 28, 2005 Report Posted July 28, 2005 What's so annoying about it? I haven't heard about it before.
Damaramu Posted July 28, 2005 Report Posted July 28, 2005 People put their addresses and phone numbers on there. Are they looking for trouble?
Boon Posted July 28, 2005 Author Report Posted July 28, 2005 For those that don't know, essentially its a myspace type of deal for college kids, but it's not a blog.
Jingus Posted July 28, 2005 Report Posted July 28, 2005 I agree with the others, putting your picture/address/phone number all online together is just BEGGING for trouble.
The Czech Republic Posted July 28, 2005 Report Posted July 28, 2005 I keep getting harassed by my friend to join this. I won't, because I don't like to exist on the Internet. I'm not really on Myspace or LiveJournal or any of these.
Art Sandusky Posted August 1, 2005 Report Posted August 1, 2005 I wonder if the people who post their addresses and phone numbers' rarely being on the internet (or at least in, well, these sorta parts) is related to their posting of information. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Mole Posted August 2, 2005 Report Posted August 2, 2005 I never got the e-mail from FB after I signed up so I could click on the activation link. And for some reason, I can't find the link to have them resend the e-mail, so I can't sign up. Unless I get a new e-mail addy from my new school, I can't do it.
Bruiser Chong Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 Funny you should mention this. My friend just went through this intense month-long thing with an incoming freshman who turned out to be quite the headcase. I'd say all the signs were there from the beginning, but he got himself in deeper. They finally met and she looked nothing like the pics she had sent him. He didn't wanna get into a relationship, anyway, so he sorta weasled his way out of the whole mess a week after meeting her. It was twisted, though. They had "known" each other a whole week and she was posting on her Xanga about how great he was and basically obsessed over him. Think Swimfan and that chick from Wedding Crashers. If you all want some light entertainment, I can give you her Xanga handle.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted August 3, 2005 Report Posted August 3, 2005 Gimme it, I'll have her proposing by Friday.
TheDevilAndGodAreRagingInsideMe Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 None of my facebook friends have their phone numbers or adresses, some of them don't even have their dorm.
Slickster Posted August 12, 2005 Report Posted August 12, 2005 People put their addresses and phone numbers on there. Are they looking for trouble? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> To be fair, Facebook is set up so that no one outside of your college can look at your page without consenting (by adding you to their friend list). This prevents a lot of the 'stalker' stuff, since aside from the people at your college, no one can access your page without your knowledge. People who attend your school can already look up your phone # and on-campus address anyway, so that's no big deal.

The next day she says "How come you never called me?" I told her "Well you never gave me your number." She paused for a second and came back with "Well all you had to do was go to the Tulane online student phone directory and got my number." Apparently some universities post the numbers online anyway
Guest Vitamin X Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 So, I got one of these. I like it better than Myspace, as it limits you basically only to people you may know. My school's set up in a weird way though, because they just became part of the Art Institute system, but they were their own school for a good 35-40 years beforehand and have completely different courses and it's still basically its own thing.. but our email addresses have aii.edu in them, so I guess that's the way it goes. Odd though, because there are Art Institutes all over the country, but all of them are combined into just one thing, so many of the facebook options (like the parties and groups functions) are difficult or just strange to use.
Mole Posted November 1, 2005 Report Posted November 1, 2005 It was weird for me because my school closed down.
Gary Floyd Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 I was thinking about getting a Facebook account, untul I started to hear stories about it. So fortunately, I never got one.
2GOLD Posted November 4, 2005 Report Posted November 4, 2005 My fiancee had to remove her college room number since her college believes that guy was using Facebook to get the info/room number of the girls on campus and rape them. Since that is the one common thread all the girls had. Now she locks her door and removed her room number/private info from the college directory as well. I told her that shit was messed up to begin with.
Bruiser Chong Posted December 12, 2005 Report Posted December 12, 2005 Late as usual, my school finally got added to the Facebook. Certainly a lot less clunky than MySpace, but the non-visible profiles are a mixed bag. On the one hand they prevent potential stalkers from collection personal information about you, but on the other, it's annoying that you can't check out someone's profile from say, your graduating class, just to see what they're up to, but don't necessarily want to add them as a friend. It is addicting, though, I'll give it that much. It sure brings people out of the woodwork, too. Three days into it and I've already gotten friend requests from people I had completely forgotten about or barely interacted with in high school.
yankovic fan Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 I've lately been searching recent nfl draft picks on Facebook. So far the Saint's 2nd and 3rd round picks have added me.
Hank Kingsley Posted May 7, 2006 Report Posted May 7, 2006 Yeah, it's been helpful for me in meeting people going to the school next year as well as finding people I haven't talked to since elementary school. Awesome.
Art Sandusky Posted May 7, 2006 Report Posted May 7, 2006 Repeated, from the MySpace threads we've had: "Friends! Collect 'em all!" I kinda hope there's a Facebook backlash soon. Last time I logged in, I saw "Keep up on the latest headlines with our Fox News group!" or something like that on my home page. Either way, they had a direct tie-in with Fox News, and that was the last time I'll ever visit the place.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted May 7, 2006 Report Posted May 7, 2006 Facebook got big here before MySpace did, about 2 years ago or such. Facebook is kinda left in the dust now. I did wind up having sex on the floor of one of our residence halls with a girl who "Poked" me on facebook though, and after a thorough inspection from the health clinic I am STD free, so I have nothing bad to say about this online friend device.
slimm44 Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 I'm on it. It's much secure than Myspace. People have to accept you as a friend for them to see your profile.
