2pac was excellent in a billion ways besides wordplay from his naturally strong voice, thought provoking subject matter, insane mic presence and charisma, and pop appeal.

I don't remember who mentioned it, but the "7 Day Theory" is probably 2Pac's worst album.

 

Biggie was good, but Rakim (style and flow wise) and Chuck D (lyrics wise) were both better. I always think the GZA is underrated as well when it comes to "best MC's" arguments.

weak beats. weak hooks. too much r & b. who the fuck is danny boy? why was he on a shitload of 2pac tracks? the song me against the world should have had some bite. it might as well been done by the carpenters. tupac was at his most effective when he was doing rap ballads or "gangsta" tracks. the middle road was boring & unimaginative. i never question his charisma or pop appeal; it just doesn't mean his music was any fucking good. he just didn't necessarily have the albums to back up this insane legacy. he's only done maybe a baker dozens of worthwhile songs. unlike biggie smalls who in his debut blew away anything tupac could have ever done - if he had lived to be 85.

 

where did this 83 syllables/minute come from? don't answer, i don't care.

kanye is okay. at best. very average. he'll be a greatest hits rapper just like tupac, although his work did raise jay-z's level of greatness. the blueprint is remarkable. someone needs to tell kanye less is more. i cut out about 7 tracks from his debut lp on my ipod, and it made me love the album so much more.

 

but kanye couldn't even dream of touching jay. and if jay can't touch nas, than kanye can't touch nas. beanie sigel's album from this year was better than college drop out. so was the pretty toney album.

So yeah, it's good. I really dig the Gil Scott-Heron sample on "My Way Home" and I'm happy to see Common and Kanye still doing their thing. A Common/Kanye/Legend tour coming around to the ACC would make me a happy man. Really fucking dissapointed in the Game being treated like Nate Dogg on "Crack Music" even though the song itself is fucking spectacular. Little weird that the original version of "Diamonds" is the bonus track but that's probably just Kanye being..........original. Yeah, that's it.

I just like the Otis redding sample on Gone, and Consequence blows both Kanye and Camron out the water with his verse.

 

Damn fine album but I think there were like 5 skits, right up there with the first album. Just as annoying honestly. Broke Phi Broke was no more funny than the "Get my degree's" guy in the first album.

The "Diamonds" remix is much better than the single, so I'm glad it's there. The Broke Phi Broke stuff sucks, but the album as a whole is good. It might be great, but I need to listen to it a lot more to figure that out.

at this message board i post at, we have this wonderful thread about people who shouldn't be able to discuss music. cbright fits into that category with his "the chronic is the best rap album of all-time" talk. the chronic is as overhyped of an album that there'll ever be. anyone who is biased towards the west coast, or is entangled in the whole eminem/dre/50 relationship will invariably boast that the chronic changed the rap game with dre's wonderful prouduction & yadayada. like many, or most, of the death row roster, the chronic is another album which places style over substance. there's a few "bangin'" tracks, but not a cohesive collection of songs that have a meaning, or have any soul. superficial. and yes, you are onto something. the greatest superficial album of all-time is doggystyle. one of the greatest party albums ever. the greatest gimmick rap album is 36 chambers. but as far as just being a well balanced rap album, neither will come close to touching ready to die.

The largest problem with The Chronic is its so-so second half. I love the album dearly, but all of the Dogg Pound guys do much better work on Doggystyle. There's a stiff blend of party tracks and hard-talk gangsta tracks on The Chronic, which makes it difficult to recommend for either purpose exclusively. That middle stretch of stuff like "High Powered" and "Stranded on Death Row" are largely posse tracks that lack beats as interesting as material that even dates back to the N.W.A. albums. Banky's right in that Ready to Die does a better balancing act of all these things; Biggie does it all even within single songs.

Did about five minutes of googling and checking my copy of Dropout...

 

College Dropout has seven skits, coming out at 5:30 if you're REALLY generous. This isn't taking into account 'Last Call', which runs 12:40, or the skits that run over the end of music tracks into its designated track. The album clocks out at 76:25. With 'Last Call', which I do count, the skits run 18:10.

 

Late Registration runs five skits at 3:10. I haven't heard the entire album in its unedited form, so I can't vouch for whether songs have long skits placed into the music tracks. The album clocks out at 69:48.

I can't find any of my old Tupac CDs to check myself, but it definitely reminds me of or is one.
