Jake 'The Snake' Roberts DVD

Recommended Posts

Guest Dumb Monkey
Jake and Rick Rude has some great matches and an awesome feud throughout most of 1988...I'm very happy to see their match from the 10/88 MSG house show on here.

I'll be getting this set.

Name 1. The three most high profile matches of theirs that I've seen (WM IV, Wrestlefest '88, 10/88 SNME) were complete dog shit. Rude was a borderline good wrestler for a 18 month period in WCW, and Roberts rarely had great wrestling matches. He could cut a killer promo whenever he wanted, but more often than not, his matches stunk.

The Jake/Savage incident from SNME absolutely MUST be on this DVD, I remember it so vividly..I was scared big time about it at the time, i was 8 or 9 at the time. Classic TV.

Colour me unimpressed with that match listing. Did they really need the 1998 ECW match ? I mean, granted, they own the ECW library and have to make good their investment, but why use such a shitty match considering the many great ECW matches that have never made it to a DVD? Even the Wrestlemania match (w/ Honky Tonk Man) feels wasteful with their WM box set coming out in November, and surely the fans that buy the Jake DVD are also the fans most likely to be buying the WM boxset.

Obviously, the promos will be all that makes this a worthwhile DVD rent for me.

I guess it's a matter of opinion...but I liked the Rude/Roberts feud of 1988. As for the matches you mentioned their WrestleMania 4 match was probably the best. Another one would be from the L.A. Sports Arena in August of 88.

I haven't seen the October 88 MSG match...which is why I will buy this DVD set. I'm not saying that Rude and Roberts had 5 star matches but they were far from "dog shit" considering alot of stuff that was going on in the WWF in 1988.

As for Rick Rude...Rude had some of his best matches in the WWF with Roberts along with Ricky Steamboat. I think alot of people look down on Rude's WWF career because he always got paired up in feuds with lame talent like Ultimate Warrior, Brutus Beefcake, and Hacksaw Jim Duggan. Even Ric Flair would have a tough time looking good having to wrestle those hacks night in and night out.

Back to Jake...Jake also had some good matches with Ted Dibiase, Ricky Steamboat and Curt Hennig during this time period. Jake wasn't a high flyer or spot machine wrestler but was a master in ring psychology and could work 20+ minute matches with the best WWF had to offer back then. From 1986 to 1990 Jake was an above average wrestler in the WWF believe it or not. Age and bad habits caught up with him quick though and in my opinion he stuck around too long and alot of fans remember him for his 1996 run as an out of shape has-been drunk.

I think the match listing is fine. Relatively few recycled matches from widely spread ppvs or other dvds. While unspectacular, I'm looking forward to seeing the rare goodies on it. Roberts/Poffo should be an entertaining extra as well as his pre-WWF stuff.

The Snake Bite segment was replayed at Survivor Series 1991 anyway and I'm sure it'll be brought up in the main feature. However, I'm thinking they just want to shy away from showing too much Macho Man footage for fear of having to put up w/ his tantrums for using his likeness and all that jazz.

I'm guessing they only left out Savage so they can save it for his inevitable DVD!

The matches aren't going to be great but the promos and the feature sold me. Jake's story is much more engaging and compelling then "Jim Warrior Hellwig went wacko".

My guess is they'll address the feud with Randy Savage in the feature itself. Since the feud was more about everything happening outside of the ring, including a match would be rather pointless.

I'll be getting the Jake DVD.

I won't touch the Warrior DVD with a ten foot pole. You couldn't pay me to watch it.

What if I threw mine at you and it hit you?........I should have waited on the Warri or dvd, I really should have.

I don't think it would have. I mean, they could have at least put the match from Tuesday in Texas in there that was hyped all during the Survivor Series that year. The heat was way-up for that one.

Was that the one where Taker stops Jake from hitting Savage with the chair and that segues into the Taker/Snake feud?

Does it at least have a good nostalgia factor via the matches?

No, that came the sometime after Royal Rumble '92 IIRC.

The Tuesday in Texas match is the one were Roberts slaps Elizabeth after the match.

The Ultimate Warrior DVD has the Randy Savage WrestleMania VII match, as well as the Hulk Hogan WrestleMania VI match. I think the Savage match is worth the purchase alone if you can wait for the price to drop quite a bit. Both matches have that nostalgia factor, and if you're a completist for DVD quality, then you can do worse than adding them to the collection.

As for the main feature, as has been discussed many times, it's filled with tons of lies as far as what's discussed, but that has a weird entertainment value to it. I can only speak for myself, but I found it shockingly re-watchable too, maybe because of the outrageousness of some of the comments. It has some sort of value, in a way, that something like the Road Warriors DVD main program doesn't. Wouldn't shock me if they were doing that to make the DVD stand out from all their other releases. I also hate to repeat something Scott Keith said, but he was right in his review when he said there's entertainment value when certain people go to great lengths to lie and bury someone they disliked, or didn't play by their rules, or whatever.

No, that was their blow-off match, which was the main event on the 2nd to last SNME.
