On that same episode of TNA Today, there was a good interview with Eric Young. I like where they have turned him from loveable retard to love sick puppy. I like James Storm but I don't like Jackie Moore with him.

Former WCW & TNA star Konnan made an appearance on Wrestling Observer Live with Dave Meltzer and Bryan Alvarez on Sunday night (July 8) discussing his departure from TNA Wrestling and speaking out in the media regarding the Chris Benoit situation. Here are some highlights:

 

- On leaving TNA, Konnan said it was a combination of five years of lies building up and not getting paid enough money.

 

- He added that not being helped with his health issues also caused him to make his decision. Konnan said he came into TNA with a hip problem and the excuse he got from TNA was that he already had a bad hip. Konnan told them it got worse working for them.

 

- Konnan said when it was time for him to get the hip replacement surgery, TNA did loan him the money, but wanted it all paid back in full. He said they also offered to loan him money for his kidney transplant as well, but again wanted to be paid back in full.

 

- He said that TNA always disrespected him and briefly mentioned some racial tension.

 

- Konnan said he could never understand why when he would go to TNA and would ask for more money why that would tell him they couldn't, but were re-signing Christian Cage and giving Kurt Angle and Sting huge contracts.

 

- He said since he had somewhere else to go (AAA), he just left.

 

- Konnan said he told Homicide and Hernandez not to leave TNA because he was. He gave them his reasons for leaving having been there since day one and now being broke. "I decided to quit. Enough was enough," said Konnan.

 

- He added that Dixie Carter has her head in the sand and is oblivious to the problems with TNA. Konnan said that she complains about Jeff Jarrett all the time, but never pulls the trigger and gets him out of there.

 

- "All of the talent is frustrated there. No one watches the show," said Konnan. He added that the mid-card guys in the X Division are buried so bad and the people in power don't care.

 

- Said BG James, Kip James and Senshi have all asked for releases from TNA, but the company won't give it to them. He said he just straight up quit and they can't obligate him to work for them since TNA deals don't work like that.

 

- On getting involved in the media with the Chris Benoit situation, Konnan said quote, "They called me. I didn't call them."

 

- Said he felt we are all accessories to this (those in the wrestling industry). Felt it was his duty to speak up about the wrestling industry and steroids.

 

- Konnan said he wasn't afraid to speak his mind and that others won't because they are in fear they won't get a job with WWE.

 

- Said he didn't understand why so many wrestlers die and no one does a thing about it. He hoped by speaking out that someone in some type of power would step in and get some regulation.

 

- Said he has gotten some positive and negative feedback to speaking out in the media about what goes on behind-the-scenes with steroid use.

 

- His stance is that it will save lives and that wrestlers won't have to be on the road so much per year. "We are year round. And you have to take all these substances to stay in tip-top shape," said Konnan. "We are a different breed and put up with it because we love it."

 

- Said the only good thing that could come out of the Chris Benoit situation is that more attention could get put on the bad things in wrestling.

 

Although I think Konnan making any kind of reference to racism (which he attributes to many problems) should always be taken with a grain of salt, he's still someone who has first-hand experience of the supposedly 'low backstage morale' that's constantly being reported.

True. I started watching TNA about an year ago, until then I didn't know shit about them and totally associated TNA with Samoa Joe, even though I hadn't seen him wrestle at all. Joe IS TNA, if they lose him, they lose their face (no pun intended).

Go look at the cover art for all the DVDs of their shows. TNA disagrees with you. They see Angle, Sting, and Christian as the big stars (and of course Jarrett). Guys like Styles, Daniels, and Joe mean shit to them in the long run, to their way of thinking.

 

What TNA thinks ain't always the same as the fans think. Sure, I might be an odd case, but for ME Joe is the face of TNA.

Thanks for posting the Konnan info from WOL. Gutted to see him go, but glad he asked Homicide and Hernandez to stay. The more and more reports that surface about TNA the more I start to get worried that its just going to implode on itself due to shitty booking, low moral and big wages to old stars... hang on, hasn't all this happened before?

Not sure what this means yet, but Samoa Joe was offered a new contract and turned it down. This may turn into a big story or it may just be a leverage deal. One thing to consider is that Konnan and Ron Killings both quit and there have been at least a half dozen guys who have asked to get out of their contracts and been turned down. I know at least a few guys who I am told will not be resigning when their deals come up under any circumstances, but did not hear the same thing yet about Joe.

 

The irony is that the guys who want out the most have contracts that don't expire until 2009. I believe the TNA plan is to continue to build up the Joe vs. Kurt feud to culminate in a match for the title this fall (meaning, sadly, that D-Von Dudley is not going to win the World Title on Sunday). I would think that if Joe re-signed they'd put the belt on him, but if he doesn't than obviously that's not going to happen. According to a source in WWE, there is mild interest in him but it's nowhere near a lock that he'd be signed.

 

He's not particularly tall, doesn't have the WWE build, plus he wouldn't be able to do most of his high impact stuff. One person compared him to Tazz, a guy that people raved about due to his work in ECW, but then when he got called up to WWE and all of his suplexes and such were taken away from him, he was just a short guy that ended up as an announcer within a few years. When Tazz first got called up, in fact, Vince took one look at him and almost ended his in-ring run before it started. Writer Chris Kreski, who died of cancer a year or so ago at age 42, pushed really hard for him and ended up getting him on TV at least for a period.

 

I'm told his current deal expires in a few months, so really they may be building up towards a match that might never take place if he leaves before the PPV is booked. I would think they would have a plan in place to make sure that didn't happen, even if it's to accelerate storylines so he'd do that last job right before he left if that's what he chooses to do.

I don't know about the ratings, but their first PPV matches drew 60,000 (which is a TNA record) and the rematches were around 25,000.

I think the feud is loosely going on, its not one I'm totally interested in so don't pay much attention when they mention it, but it seems to be mentioned now and again. I don't think it's going to help get Lance Hoyt over though, I'm not sure anything will.

Sources within TNA have stated that during last nights PPV, Matt Morgan was supposed to do a run in during either the Christian Cage or the Kurt Angle match. This however was scratched last minute as Morgan's flight from Japan had been delayed due to in climate weather.

 

We noted here earlier last week that Morgan would be in Japan working for the Hustle promotion but was backstage during recent tapings prior to his departure to Japan.

 

It has been rumored for many months now that Morgan would be working for TNA but sources close to the situation report that Morgan will be used in some capacity during tonight's taping.

 

It is not known at this time in what capacity he will be utilized but it should be noted that both Jim Cornet and Vince Russo are very high on Morgan going back to his OVW and WWE Days. With that said it's very unlikely that the former OVW Heavyweight Champ will be introduced at mid-card level.

I do think Morgan could be talented (didn't he ask for a release from WWE so he could improve in Japan?)...however, I don't really see what he would add to the already crowded TNA roster at this point. Maybe they are thinking of using him as an accomplice for Kurt Angle?

I know Tomko asked for release to go work in Japan. I am pretty sure Morgan was one of the mass firings, right after they made him stutter and paired him with Carlito.

I never saw Matts work in WWE, i'd stopped watching it by then. So it'll be a clean slate for me.

 

Same goes for Tomko and Steiner. I missed both of their WWE runs so they were clean slates in my book.
