Rocky VI Officially Greenlit

Recommended Posts

Anyone reading Stallone's candid QA on AICN? he does like 10 questions every day, they're on day 13 now, I dunno how many they're gonna do. Its on the left side of AICN (the latest should have links to all the previous ones). Stallone's actually pretty funny and self-depricating at times, candid, and interesting.

I finally got to see this late tonight. This is definitely a great movie, and although no one would ever take it seriously as such, this one should definitely be an Oscar Contender. Don't go into this film expecting Rocky 3 or 4, it's definitely much more in line with the first film. It's just a very emotional story about a broken man looking to pick up the tattered pieces of his life. This is definitely a top 10 of 2006 for me, and one of the best film's I've seen in a while.

I'm fuckin' HYPED to see this. I haven't been this excited since Episode III. Like I posted earlier in this thread, it's got the red-blooded male part of me super excited.

I watched it at work last night. I loved it, thought it was very good and very emotional. It drew me back into the world of Rocky, the Rocky I love. It's lightyears better than Rocky 5, and I can't wait to watch it again in theaters. My only problem lies with the training montage. I felt it was too short. Still a great movie.

Yea, the training montage WAS too short.

Rocky's also getting good reviews too. The critics are all saying that while it's flawed, in the end, you can't help but love it.

Not really. I''ll put it in spoiler tags though-

Rocky still lives in the old neighbourhood, but the brain damage thing is forgotten about. He runs a fairly successful restaurant so I assume he's not broke.

I just got back from the theatre with my Dad. He's been to see exactly 3 movies at the theatre in the last 20 years or so...Star Wars, Forrest Gump, and now Rocky VI. I was thrilled to see that the new Rocky was more in the vein of the first two, not that there was anything wrong with the third, fourth, or fifth, but I always preferred the emotional, character dramas of I and II to the action-driven III, IV, and V. I thought the movie was extremely well written, very believable, and I liked how the new one acknowledged the history of the characters. It was a great way to finish out the series and the ending was wonderful. There was not a dry eye in the theatre at the end. It's good to see the movie's getting good reviews. It was good enough for me to forgive Stallone for Judge Dredd.

My dad's like that as well. The last thing he went to see was jurassic park, but he's determined to go see rocky 6.

I saw this today and it is easily one of the best movies I have seen in a LONG time. I enjoyed every part of it; seeing what Rocky and everyone else has been up to for the past 10-15 years, as well as the incredibly well-done fight at the end. Spider Rico with his random appearances at the strangest times (washing dishes in Rocky's resturant basement, and reading Rocky some lines from the Bible before his fight) was one of my favorite things about the movie as well. One thing I didn't get is how they left-out the fact that Paulie worked as a 'collector' for Gazzo in Rocky 2, and acted as though he never left the slaughter house.

Great movie.

It took a while to finally get it right, but Rocky Balboa was the perfect ending to the series. I loved how this movie tied everything together from the opening scene of Rocky I to the present day. Excellent storytelling.

Wildpegasus just sent me a PM at DVDVR. He wants me to tell you all this:

"I'm not usually one to say I told you so guys but guess what? I told you so."

I liked the movie, didn't find it as good as the original, but then again the original is one of my favorite movies ever. I liked the numerous references and music of the old Rocky universe, where he's a guy from the street and not the multi-millionnaire of III and IV. I wished it was longer though, with maybe another training montage, it went to the match too quickly. Dixon's character should have been more developped, he wwas as generic as Union Kane in Rocky V and doesn't stand out like Apollo, Clubber or Drago.

The people who sat next to me complained that Rocky didn't win. It makes perfect sense since, in the original movie, Rocky wanted to go the distance against Apollo, not to absolutely beat him. He still wanted to go the distance in this one to prove that he still had it.

The HBO PPV presentation was weird but it worked in the sense that the sport of boxing has changed through the years. Rocky is from another generation and doesn't fit in all the blitz and fireworks.

He should had run up the stairs without his dog ! :)

I place it maybe second or third in the series.

I thought it was really good. Definatley makes up for the last...well 4...movies. Very inspirational and emotional. The series should just be Rocky then Rocky Balboa.

If it was just Rocky and Rocky Balboa he never would've been the champion and no one would even remember him let alone care enough about him to do the fantasy match-up thing.

Saw the late night showing and I'm really impressed at the way they wrapped up the series. Like everybody has said, they went back to letting the story take center stage and the action was basically a nice bonus. All the little references and jabs were great. It was slightly preachy with the underlying message, but the message was a good one so it's forgivable.

Excellent film, a must see blood pumper. I'm not even sure if that is the correct phrasing but whatever. Heartwrenching, inspirational and overall one of the better movies on 2006.

Perfect ending to the series. You cannot go out any better than Rocky goes out.

Better than Rocky V, at least.

Mason Dixon was by far the worst Rocky opponent ever.

The "real! good!" boxing scenes were outlandish, with the boxers throwing seemingly dozens of punches a second in late rounds. Give me a good steroid-fueled Drago punch, anyday.

I liked the non-boxing story. Very well done.

But this wasn't a Rocky movie to me. Not cheesy enough, no outlandish opponent.

The result of the fight was an abortion.

*** out of 5 because of the awesome shots of Philly, some great story between Rocky/Paulie/Son, timely flashbacks, and the angle in the fight where Dixon hurts his hand.

I actually thought Mason Dixon was VERY well developed for the time on screen he has. He's not a villain, he's not some stereotype in there fighting. He felt like a real person, caught in the newer age of boxing and unable to understand what's going on. He's fighting for dignity in a world of a sport that doesn't GIVE dignity anymore. The fact that he considers Rocky a sideshow at first, but by the end comes to respect him and finally knows what a real champion looks like is his climatic moment. Like his trainer said, he had to find that one opponent that would help define himself as a fighter, and through Rocky, and watching someone defy all the odds, he found that opponent. Just like Rocky, Dixon wouldn't go down, or stay down, it was just as much his moment to prove himself as it was Rocky's. The fact that the person who played Dixon isn't even an ACTOR is even more impressive.

I've also read that some thought the Rocky/Marie relationship didn't work out...I thought it was fantastic. It was never about romance, or her becoming the new Adrian. Rocky needed that human relationship with someone, to bring back himself back to the real world, and Marie was the one who did that. Other then a kiss on the cheek, I don't think they even HINTED that there was romantic feelings there. Rocky didn't live in the real world anymore, he simply existed and only thought about the past. Through the friendship with Marie, he was able to remember who *HE* was, and by the end put all his pain away. By the time the fight came, Rocky had pretty much conquered most of his pain...he just needed to re-affirm who he was as a person, and the only way he had left to do that was by fighting.

Absolutely fantastic movie on just about every level for me. I can't think of a single part I disliked.

Part of the problem with Mason Dixon's character is that he was played by Antonio Tarver. Not only was he not a very good actor (which is why they limited his lines I would assume), but he's also a light heavyweight boxer trying to play a dominant heavyweight champion. He didn't look impressive, he didn't sound impressive and he didn't fight impressively. It didn't work.

The first half of the movie was really good, especially the Paulie-related stuff. The rest was ragingly mediocre, mostly because it was incredibly rushed and poorly developed. Also, the circumstances surrounding the fight were ridiculous. Of course, Rocky IV and V were ridiculous too, but those movies also sucked. Rocky Balboa didn't suck, but it wasn't even sniffing Rocky, or even Rocky II.

Great movie (music, flashbacks, commentary during the final fight), but I was disappointed that Rocky

didn't die in the end. I wish Stallone didn't keep on pussying out of doing it (He's been wanting to kill off Rocky since Rocky III). It would have been the proper way to end the series since Rocky could have been with Adrianne again, it would added the tradegy had he won the fight. He could have easily collapsed in the locker room after the fight suffering from the head trauma Drago gave him many years ago then they could have replayed "No Easy Way Out".

About cameos:

I was bummed to not see either Thunderlips, Lang, or Drago again. It was cool to see Michael Buffer and Mike Tyson though.

About Dixon:

He was okay. I agree he's not a convincing opponent, he looks more like a jobber boxer compared to the monsters Rocky's fought in the past. I also didn't like the fact that he

wins the fight, no selling his broken hand. I had to call bullshit on that.

I saw this movie and it was really great. I thought Stallone did fantastic, and did some good acting at various points, like when he breaks down to Paulie or when he finally tells his snot of kid off. I kinda agree, Dixon really felt like a lightweight opponent compared to other opponents. I think they needed to show a real fight of him just dominating someone with speed to establish credibility and they didn't do it. Although he was a better opponent than Tommy Gunn ()
