Jon Stewart to Host Oscars

Jon Stewart to host '06 Academy Awards

January 5, 2006

LOS ANGELES-- Jon Stewart has been tapped to host this year's Oscars, the Academy of Motions Pictures Arts and Sciences announced Thursday.

The Academy Awards show's producer said Stewart has many of the qualities of previous masters of ceremonies.

"Jon is the epitome of a perfect host-- smart, engaging, irreverent and funny," producer Gil Cates said.

Stewart, 43, hosts Comedy Central's "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart," which has earned seven Emmys and a Peabody award. He also won the 2005 Thurber Prize for American Humor for his book, "The Daily Show with Jon Stewart Presents America (The Book): A Citizen's Guide to Democracy Inaction."

Stewart, who will host the Academy Awards telecast for the first time, also has appeared in several movies, including "The Faculty," "Death to Smoochy" and "Big Daddy."

"As a performer, I'm truly honored to be hosting the show," Stewart said, then joked: "Although, as an avid watcher of the Oscars, I can't help but be a little disappointed with the choice. It appears to be another sad attempt to smoke out Billy Crystal."

Stewart follows a long line of standup comedians who have hosted the Oscars. Over the years, Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, Whoopi Goldberg and Crystal have held down the podium.

Speculation swirled after Chris Rock's departure about who would replace him. Frequently mentioned candidates included Goldberg, Steve Martin and late-night hosts Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien.

Rock drew younger viewers to last year's telecast, but his barbs skewering stars like Jude Law, Tobey Maguire and others alienated some academy members. Rock is currently producing and narrating "Everybody Hates Chris," a sitcom on UPN based on his life.

The 78th annual Academy Awards will air March 5 on ABC from Hollywood.

I'm looking forward to this. I just hope they don't nominate any shit movies this time.

It looks like Brokeback Mountain is the favorite going into the show this year.

As ignorant as this sounds, a movie about gay cowboys just doesn't interest me.

I know they are talking about Whoopi for a second time but....

Finally, a decent host. Chris Rock wasn't too bad, though. But Whoopi Goldberg and Billy Crystal are beyond old news now, and shouldn't host ever again. Especially Whoopi.

I can't wait for some HILARIOUS, BAFFLED LOOKS!

There you have it. Here's every fucking episode of the Daily Show since 2002:

*standing ovation*

I'd like to see Family Guy take a shot at Jon's descent into formulaic hell (they ripped on Dennis Miller Live) but they won't, for obvious reasons

Jon Stewart will do fine. He's funny, but not too hilarious, and not really offensive to many people. whatever.

The thing with the Oscars is, you can't really do anything really funny. Putting aside pathetic broadcast standards, if you try to make fun of Hollywood, they revolt on you. I mean yeah there's the occasional 'diss' joke, but its pretty lightweight. You have to do that sort of schmalty bob hope billy crystal type thing. Anything else and people pan you. by the way, letterman wasnt anywhere near the worst oscar host ever, there were several funny moments, and some of the way he mocked the 'hollywood elite' was pure gold.

Then again, my humor is pretty skewed to begin wiht. A host walking up to Tom Cruise and saying "Dude, you're batshit crazy" and walking away would be funny to me.

Stewart is very clever and creative. He's funny to me for those reasons. The Oscars getting Stewart to host their shitty show probably caused them to all do back flips of joy.

That part is true, even though I don't like him.

All of the Daily Show has actually started sucking over the past year or so. The loss of Steve Carrell and Stephen Colbert killed that show.

Stewart and Seth are clones in terms of political views, most likely friends, and ripping on how stale Stewart with his whole Republican clip+baffled look act might hurt his feelings
