Slayer 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2006 Tony Dungy, the NFL's answer to Buck Showalter Tony Dungy: Marty Schottenheimer for a new generation. snuffbox 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2006 The problem with Carolina is they revolve around Steve Smith. He's a hell of a receiver, but good coverage can contain him. Delhomme does not have the option of another receiver of Smith calibur. Seattle has plenty of receivers to throw to making it near impossible for double man coverage. Ricky Proehl tends to show up at the right time in big games.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2006 What did Peyton say about his O-Line? "Let's just say we had some problems in protection," Manning said. "I'll give Pittsburgh credit for their blitzes and their rush, but we did have some protection problems." That's about it. Followed by some line about wanting not to be a bad teammate. I remember he said something else but I'll be damned if I can find it anywhere.
KingPK 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2006 What did Peyton say about his O-Line? Something along the lines of "I want to be a good teammate here, so let's just say we had some protection problems today." I called Pittsburgh/Carolina at the Pit, so I'll do the same here. Pitt's D is very similar to NE's (but with more blitzing and a better secondary) so they should be able to goad Plummer into some mistakes.
2GOLD 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2006 Just out of curiousity here, who did Pittsburgh lose from the 2004 team that earned the top seed? I know Plaxico but did they lose anyone else of importance that they didn't replace with a much better player?
Just John 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2006 No, not really. The Steelers only "problem" this year was when Ben got injured and we lost 3 in a row knocking them pretty low in the playoff standings. Although, the Steelers are a much better road team than home team, so that may have been a blessing in disguise.

Listening to this board between Leinart and Manning, one would think quarterbacks are supposed to practice Japanese ritual suicide upon a loss.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2006 I wouldn't doubt it. I watched more of the highlights, and when Manning had time to throw the ball, he pranced around like an idiot hesitating instead of running for five/six yards down the open.
The Man in Blak 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2006 1. The quote doesn't really give justice to how he said it. I'm not saying that he was standing at an altar of bone between two pillars of fire, damning the linemen to hell, but he wasn't going "gee fellas, aw shucks" between questions either. He laughably said "I want to be a good teammate" more than a couple of times before saying the quote up above, which pretty much cinched that his intent was to place blame on the linemen, rather than congratulate the Steelers. 2. Manning really shouldn't be the one pointing fingers at his linemen, when he's the one at the line, changing protection schemes on every other play. 3. Even when he did have time to throw, he was very tentative. He needs to sit down and have a conversation with David Carr when it comes to what real problems with protection are. Indy certainly had problems with the blitz but, if you would have listened to the way Manning told it, he was picking linebackers out of his teeth all day. Annabelle 0 Report post Posted January 16, 2006 i only care that tarrell owens was sent to the theorectical gulag last sumemr for saying mcnabb got tired at the end of the super bowl. how can manning get away with blaming his o-line? he's the one who makes the audibles & takes great pride in manipulating the defense with it. the steelers just blew straight through him. he was nervous for the first half. he switched between over & under throwing his receivers. btu why is manning's persecution of his teamates getting no play from the media? because he's the nfl's cover boy. why did he get the benefit of the doubt when that play was reversed? or that blatent pass interference? joey porter is right. something is going on. with the patriots eliminated, the nfl wanted the colts to move forward. how can this final four be any more of a nightmare for them? vanderjagt blaming the lord was quite comical as well. i feel bad for dungy, the only remotely likeable person on that team and i like the revisionists talking "i never had faith in the bears" after they lose out. our the people attacking lovie smith for not playing gorssman in week 17. its funny considering orton played far better than anyone gave credit for. barring injuries, this team will be representing the nfc next year. no question. a healthy mike brown & 2 slips would have won the game for the bears. too bad. BruiserKC 0 Report post Posted January 17, 2006 Is it time to start wondering if Manning will ever win the Super Bowl? With the Patriots knocked out, home field advantage, a team that had everything pretty much in place for the run to Detroit...there was no reason to not get to the Super Bowl at least. Not to mention that they got the benefit of an interception that wasn't called (the officiating seems to get worse every year) and a Christmas present wrapped in the form of Bettis' fumble. Peyton Manning is overrated, and I'm tired of people talking about how great he is when he chokes in the clutch. Bettis on the goal line? Right call to make IMO. You're up by 3, Colts have all their timeouts and Manning has the means to take them downfield in a hurry for a score. Finish the job...it was a fluke deal that the helmet bonked Bettis in the hand and the ball came loose. As a Bears fan...I think I'm going to cringe for a while everytime I hear the name "Steve Smith" for the next few weeks. Everytime Carolina needed a big play, Smith came through. Much props to the Panthers...da Bears were a year ahead of schedule. Now the interesting question...Orton or Grossman for next year?
Annabelle 0 Report post Posted January 17, 2006 bruiserkc, you're either a complete moron or not a bears fan. why on earth would the ebars go back to orton after investing a playoff game in grossman? or turning the ball over to grossman with two weeks left in the season. he is their starter. no question. unless you're an idiot... manning is a great qb. he is just a heartless, souless robot who is incapable of being a leader. he'll never win a championship. The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted January 17, 2006 Grossman is no top-echelon quarterback, but even I can see that he's miles and miles ahead of Kyle Orton. Of course Grossman for next season.
USC Wuz Robbed! 0 Report post Posted January 17, 2006 Yeah I felt Grossman had more of an upside anyways. He did very well in the playoff game, even if he got picked in the end. Orton has shown nothing of progress during the season, hell he was much better in the preseason than the season. Grossman is only a couple of years older than Orton, so just stay with Grossman as starter.
snuffbox 0 Report post Posted January 17, 2006 I dont agree with people that are comparing Manning to Dan Marino (talent and records but no ring)...Marino never had the talent around him that Manning has had the last couple years.
Annabelle 0 Report post Posted January 17, 2006 Grossman is no top-echelon quarterback, but even I can see that he's miles and miles ahead of Kyle Orton. Of course Grossman for next season. not yet. in a year he will be. look what that kid did last ngiht with only 7 starts under his belt. if he can stay healthy, he'll be a stud. razazteca 0 Report post Posted January 17, 2006 But can Grossman make it out of the pre-season healthy or will the very first tackle break his collarbone or tear his ACL? Da Bears should make a trade for Joey Harrington....I wonder what he can do on a team that is run first and does not have 2 gimps at WR. Da Bears have a chance to be the 2000 Ravens, the only missing piece is a babysitter QB to make accurate screen passes.
Dr. Tyler; Captain America 0 Report post Posted January 17, 2006 Seriously, if one year was all that it took to turn Eli into a "top echelon" quarterback, give Grossman another nine games or so to show whether or not the Bears need to trade for Phillip Rivers. Ricky Proehl tends to show up at the right time in big games. Fuck yes, people forget about Ricky Proehl, the salty old slot guy who plays his role on the team perfectly. And Manning's going to be the Elway guy, not Marino. He'll win, but it'll be in the last two years of his career when he's forced more to rely on others and accepts it. The games this week are extremely difficult to pick. Maybe NFL Live was right when they opened up by saying this was the best week of the season.
