Cinderella Man was a pretty good by the numbers sports movie but was ruined for me by the dopes who unironically stood on their feet and cheered when Jim Braddock beat Max Baer. I like an enthusiastic movie audience as much as the next guy but that was ridiculous.

I'm having a hard time remembering the movies of '05. That was a great year in my life, not so much for movies. I think my favorites that year were Hustle and Flow, 40 Year Old Virgin, and Me and You and Everyone We Know...what an odd trio. No Direction Home would be up there but I think that premiered on PBS so I guess it's in a whole other category.

2005 was a pretty great year for movies. I remember thinking Munich got robbed, but that's just me.

There's a girl on Price is Right right now with stuff written all over her shirt. I don't know if its intentional, but the words make a vague swastika-esque shape.

I went to Virgin Megastore in Manhattan last week and bought the special edition release of MY BLOODY VALENTIN and the clerk said to me, "It's out on DVD already?" My reply was, "I hope so, it came out in the '80's." He came back with, "Oh the one out now is a remake?" I wanted to punch him in the neck.

Revolutionary Road was interesting. Kate Winslet's character is deplorable and I'd go so far as to say loathsome.

Within 30 minutes I turned to my girlfriend and said that the only way I was leaving the movie happy is if she killed herself. She didn't; but the bitch died and that was ok with me.

Awesome performances, though. Some top notch acting. But I'd avoid if possible.

I agree, the film never clicked for me, because essentially we're shown these two miserable, selfish people, and expected to sympathize with them. This is not a case of making a film about selfish people, and merely observing them (as example, There Will be Blood), we are expected to understand and feel for these characters who give us nothing to cling to because of their absolute self inwardness.

If the film had given us more than a few passing glimpses of where they started, to give us a sense of what, if anything drove them, it might be easier to understand them. But in the end we're left with half formed characters, not at all likeable and then asked as an audience to understand their behaviors. Not buying.

And yes, Munich was the best film of 2005, perhaps the most stunning and thrilling work of Spielberg's oeveur.

Out of all the 05 Best Picture nominees, I liked Good Night Good Luck the best. I remember renting the movie and thinking I would be bored to tears, but I enjoyed it so much that when it got a reduced price at my work, I bought it and watch it to this very day. The same goes for Brokeback Mountain. I didnt think I would like it, but I also ended up enjoying it as well.

I forgot about Syriana, too. Summer of '06 was a good time to be working at Blockbuster. I got to see both Syriana and Munich with no hassle or cost to me. Not only is Syriana great, but I'd call it the best horror movie of the decade. Especially with the advent of torture porn in the 00s. If Hostel qualifies as horror, then so does Syriana, based on the fingernail scene alone.

Speaking of decades, I want to start a thread for discussing movies that define a decade (but are not necessarily the best movie of that decade). I just haven't had time to type up everything since its a complicated concept.

Memento came out in 2000, right? That one sets the standard for the decade. Christ, now I wanna do a top 10 for movies of this decade.

in no particular order:

Memento (2000)

Requiem for a Dream (2000)

The Departed (2006)

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Kaïro (2001)

The Five Obstructions (2004)

No Country For Old Men (2007)

Once (2007)

Pan's Labyrinth (2006)

Sin City (2005)

I would definitely have Children of Men in my top 10.

Syriana is definitely a movie to define our times. Both in terms of structure and subject matter. The "scattering" was by design and very effectively done (reflecting the true nature of it's subject). Tremendous score and cinematography, not to mention top performances from all involved (Christopher Plummer owns things). I find it rewarding to watch even now, picking up things I hadn't noticed before. The third time I saw it was when it moved from an awesome movie to oneat the top of my all time list. Perhaps it's cause I like the topic matter, but I heart this movie.

I might put Bourne up there as well, for top of the oughts. Departed too.

If I'm going off the top of my head right now...

Royal Tennanbaums

Children of Men

Departed

American Beauty

Requiem for A Dream

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Spirited Away

Finding Nemo

Traffic

American Beauty was 1999.

So David Letterman is showing the unaired Bill Hicks routine that was pulled from the show in Oct 1993, less than five months before he died. He also has Hicks' mother on as a guest. Should be cool to finally see.

To join in fashionably late: I haven't seen about half of the movies named here, so I can't comment on the Syrianas and In the Mood For Loves of the world. But off the top of my head, my favorite movies for the past decade:

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Children of Men

Shaun of the Dead

Grizzly Man

Wall-E

Master & Commander: The Far Side of the World

The Descent

Brick

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street

And depending on my mood, throw either Dogville or The Dark Knight into the tenth spot.

Shaky attempt at a chronological order:

Traffic

Mulholland Drive

Adaptation.

Punch-Drunk Love

21 Grams

Bad Santa

Match Point

No Country for Old Men

There Will Be Blood

4 Weeks, 3 Months and 2 Days

Special mention goes to Black Hawk Down and Ocean's Twelve for being my favourite guilty pleasures.

The idea that Werner Herzog's top movie of the decade is "The Real Cancun" is absolutely mystifying. (You can Google it.)

Oldboy

The Fountain

City of God

There Will Be Blood

Memento

Collateral

Punch-Drunk Love

Yi Yi

Requiem for a Dream

Road to Perdition

O Brother Where Art Thou?, In America, Children of Men, Southland Tales, and Layer Cake just missed the cut.

Since Nick Arcade was referenced in another thread, I figured I'd bring this up. I clearly remember a game show as a kid where kids went through a mock video game store on the stage and collected as many video games as they could in a certain amount of time (much like "Supermarket Sweep", except with video games). Does anyone else remember this, and remember what it was called?
