Ditto for their cover of "Louie, Louie" (though, to be fair, they covered the more popular cover). Quoted for truth. Motorhead can really do no wrong. And about the Bowie dance-pop thing...uh...I like "Dancin' in the Streets" by Bowie and Jaggar better than the original. Yeah...good stuff. I think the Bowie/Jagger thing is one of the most terrifyingly bad things ever, especially if you've seen the video. That said, I have no opinion on the original. The Birthday Party come very close to surpassing the original version of 'Loose', but it's still a losing battle. The Wedding Present's 'Make Me Smile (come up and see me)' is great, and I certainly prefer it to the original, but it's hard to compare the two directly. Ward "Let's Dance" over Davey "David Bowie" Jones Red House Painters "All Mixed Up" over The Cars I think the VU version is superior. It's more successful in setting a mood than Big Star's version, which sounds laboured and somewhat lost, more like an uninspired demo track than the tight little song VU make it. Maybe it's a song that was more suited to a female vocalist but Nico seems to capture key lines like 'see the way she walks/hear the way she talks' exactly right. The backing vocals on the chorus are also 10x more effective. I'd go with you on the other two. I often have the same bias for an accoustic cover. Mark Lanegan's Carry Home over the Gun Club. I can see why more people like the Velvet Underground's version, I just really, really hate Nico's voice, but I like her solo CD, oddly enough. I'm a walkin' contradiction! I've agreed with most of the other Bowie covers being better than Bowie originals, but I just can't agree with that. I do like the Wallflowers version, however...but Bowie's version is great. I also like the Arcade Fire's live version of "Five Years" better than Bowie's, but I don't think that's available to the general public, but it was good when they did it in concert. I once stated in one of these covers threads that I've yet to hear a version of "Hallelujah" to completely satisfy me. Buckley's is too histrionic; John Cale's is too cold and detached; Cohen's original is, well, awful. Apparently, Sheryl Crow did her own take of it, which I haven't heard. But, yeah, Leonard Cohen's version is terrible. What the Hell was he thinking with those electro-drums and backup vocalists and stuff? Sheryl Crow's done some pretty shitty covers, namely "Sweet Child O' Mine" and "The First Cut is the Deepest", not that the latter was a very good song to begin with. Some of those have some actual quality stuff on it, discounting the kitsch factor. There's this Pink Floyd one, Dub Side of the Moon that's actually quite good. Of course this was going to be the first one I mentioned. SY also did a killer version of Ca Plane Por Moi. I'll probably get called nuts for this one, but I prefer the Fugees version of "No Woman no Cry," because musically it's one of my least favorite Marley songs. (though the lyrics are terrific) Jimi's All along the Watchtower is another obvious one. Marilyn Manson "Sweet Dreams" cover Eww, no. The Eurhythmics (sp?) version is WAY better.
