ohhhh

this is an easy one.

sonic youth's superstar more than the carpenters. the original is very charming in its own right, but sy's rendition transforms it into something completely different. something brilliant.

I'm a firm believer that Motörhead's cover "Enter Sandman" beats the fuck out of the original. Ditto for their cover of "Louie, Louie" (though, to be fair, they covered the more popular cover).

Quoted for truth. Motorhead can really do no wrong. I'm going to add Lacuna Coil's cover of Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence" to the list. My God is this ever superior to the original.

Agree 100%. I found the entire If I Were A Carpenter album to be good. Crackers version of "Rainy Days and Mondays" was also a great cover from it.

I guess just count me in as someone who hates Nico's voice. And about the Bowie dance-pop thing...uh...I like "Dancin' in the Streets" by Bowie and Jaggar better than the original. Yeah...good stuff.

I think the Bowie/Jagger thing is one of the most terrifyingly bad things ever, especially if you've seen the video. That said, I have no opinion on the original. The Birthday Party come very close to surpassing the original version of 'Loose', but it's still a losing battle. The Wedding Present's 'Make Me Smile (come up and see me)' is great, and I certainly prefer it to the original, but it's hard to compare the two directly.

I guess if I said I enjoyed it because of the overt homosexual overtones, that wouldn't make me look manlier than I do right now...

Big Star "Femme Fatale" over The Velvet Underground

M. Ward "Let's Dance" over Davey "David Bowie" Jones

Red House Painters "All Mixed Up" over The Cars

I think the VU version is superior. It's more successful in setting a mood than Big Star's version, which sounds laboured and somewhat lost, more like an uninspired demo track than the tight little song VU make it. Maybe it's a song that was more suited to a female vocalist but Nico seems to capture key lines like 'see the way she walks/hear the way she talks' exactly right. The backing vocals on the chorus are also 10x more effective.

I'd go with you on the other two. I often have the same bias for an accoustic cover.

Mark Lanegan's Carry Home over the Gun Club.

I can see that I'm in the minority on the Big Star/VU deal...which isn't unexpected. I can see why more people like the Velvet Underground's version, I just really, really hate Nico's voice, but I like her solo CD, oddly enough. I'm a walkin' contradiction!

Sonic Youth does a pretty good cover of the Carpenter's "Superstar" that's miles ahead of the orginal.

I have another one. I vastly prefer Jeff Buckley's version of "Hallelujah" over Leonard Cohen's electronic drum version from the mid 80s. And I have a special affinity for NOFX's version of Minor Threat's "Straight Edge".

Black Flag's got the best version of Louie, Louie y'all!

And I think Vanilla Fudge has the best version of "Keep me Hanging On". Hahaha.

And Clapton over Marley? Lacuna Coil over Depeche Mode? NoFX over MT? What the hell are you people snorting? I'm surprised I haven't seen Type O's Summer Breeze or Orgy's Blue Monday yet.

But I will give a nod to Zeppelin's "Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You".

Wallflowers "Heroes" is better than Bowies.

I've agreed with most of the other Bowie covers being better than Bowie originals, but I just can't agree with that. I do like the Wallflowers version, however...but Bowie's version is great. I also like the Arcade Fire's live version of "Five Years" better than Bowie's, but I don't think that's available to the general public, but it was good when they did it in concert.

Metallica's version of Killing Time was the shit, though Turn the Page ranks a close second. Whiskey in the Jar I run hot and cold on. At times I like it, at times I think it sucks moose balls.

Foo Fighters version of Baker Street beats Gerry Rafferty's six ways to Sunday.

The best cover I have heard still is Iced Earth's version of Maiden's Transylvania.

I once stated in one of these covers threads that I've yet to hear a version of "Hallelujah" to completely satisfy me. Buckley's is too histrionic; John Cale's is too cold and detached; Cohen's original is, well, awful. Apparently, Sheryl Crow did her own take of it, which I haven't heard. I'm sure it's awful, though she once pulled off a cover of "D'yer Ma'ker" that, when I heard it in high school, gave me a boner.

I like the bombast of Buckley's "Hallelujah". His vocals in the song are fuckin' ridiculous. Great stuff. I also like John Cale's. But, yeah, Leonard Cohen's version is terrible. What the Hell was he thinking with those electro-drums and backup vocalists and stuff? Sheryl Crow's done some pretty shitty covers, namely "Sweet Child O' Mine" and "The First Cut is the Deepest", not that the latter was a very good song to begin with. Sheryl Crow used to give me boners too when I was in high school...back when she was only 47 or so...now she's gotta be at least 70 years old.

"I Started a Joke", "War Pigs" and "Easy" by Faith No More

"In My Life" and "Hurt" by Johnny Cash

"Gloria" by Patti Smith

"Mad World" by Gary Jules

"Come Together" by Aerosmith

"Silver and Gold" by Joe Strummer

"Across the Universe" by Rufus Wainright

pretty much any version of "Hallelujah" that isn't Cohen's version

Damn, how could I forget FNM's War Pigs? I was floored when I heard it. It still holds up today, though the album is now what, 17 years old?

Johnny Cash's Hurt,

Gary Jewel's Mad World

Jimi Hendrix's All Along The Watchtower

GnR's Knockin on Heaven's Door (dependant on mood.) Also by GnR, Live and Let Die.

Metallica's Sabbra Caddabra.

Damn That Rapper's Great!

While I'm not that familiar with the song, I think that should get some kind of amnesty, as that's like comparing Elvis to The Honky Tonk Man.

The Dresden Dolls' live version of 'War Pigs' is superb, but I don't think they've recorded a version so maybe that doesn't count.

You'd be better off smearing menstrual blood on your face than listening to the Dresden Dolls.

And I'm gonna give the edge to FNM's "War Pigs" because Patton's a better singer than Ozzy. And no, I'm not one of those slavishly devoted Patton fanboys.

Anybody get into those reggae cover albums that have been coming out recently? Some of those have some actual quality stuff on it, discounting the kitsch factor. There's this Pink Floyd one, Dub Side of the Moon that's actually quite good. There's another Bobby Dylan one that's pretty good, too, but not as good as the Pink Floyd one.

Of course this was going to be the first one I mentioned.

SY also did a killer version of Ca Plane Por Moi.

I'll probably get called nuts for this one, but I prefer the Fugees version of "No Woman no Cry," because musically it's one of my least favorite Marley songs. (though the lyrics are terrific)

Jimi's All along the Watchtower is another obvious one.

Marilyn Manson "Sweet Dreams" cover

Eww, no. The Eurhythmics (sp?) version is WAY better.

"Hurt" is done much better by Sevendust on the Southside Double Wide album, I would put the original version over Johnny Cash though.
