On the "positive" side, Bob Brenly's sounding more like Steve Stone with each passing game. He was left speechless on a easy grounder to the right side that both Nevin and Walker just looked at. He also noted the Cubs would swing at a rosin bag if the pitcher threw it near the strikezone.

Nice start to a difficult road stretch for the Mets, as they take the rubber game of the series in Toronto. I said to myself before the road trip that I'd be happy if they got five wins out of the nine games, and that looks like a distinct possibility at the moment.

Oh and just so Banky doesn't think I was out of line for my response to Vern's question, here's a snippet from a piece that appeared in today's Tribune:

Asked before Saturday's game about finally getting his whole team back when Lee arrives, Baker pointed out Kerry Wood and Angel Pagan weren't back.

"That's a big one," Baker said of Wood. "And plus, we miss Pagan too."

Bob Brenly: You couldn't play this bad if you tried.

He's not even going the acid tongue route a la Steve Stone. He literally cried, "Uncle" when a pop up dropped between three players.

It is hard to believe that with as well as the Twins have played as of late they have been unable to gain any ground in the AL central. Can't anyone help the Twins and beat the White Sox and Tigers from time to time?

Tigers sweep the Cardinals. I missed the last two games of it, so I didn't see much except the highlights. More late inning comebacks from the looks of it. Good deal, though I still suspect they are in for an extended losing streak eventually.

Next up, the Houston Clemens come to town.

Who's scheduled to pitch against Clemens? Is it Verlander? If it is, Clemens shoulda made his return for the 21st of June instead of the 22nd.

Doesn't help that the Twins are 2-7 vs the Tigers and 2-5 vs the Sox. Maybe if they, you know, beat them themselves, it'd help.

Well they have not played them lately. I just said that it would be nice if they would get some help from some other teams.

I wouldn't point at the H2H match-ups at this point. The Twins were playing dreadful ball when they faced both teams earlier in the season. It should be interesting now that they've started to really put it together.

Jose Reyes had four hits again, including a leadoff homer, and Carlos Beltran hit a three-run shot to lead the New York Mets to a 7-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. The streaking Reyes went 4-for-5 for the second consecutive game and the third time in five days. He extended his hitting streak to 13 games and is on a 32-for-57 (.561) tear that has raised his batting average from .246 to .302.

That's ridiculous right there.

The Twinkies shouldn't have spotted the two big dogs in the division a 10-12 game headstart. It's bad for business.

If the Yankees/Marlins game were blacked out I would blame the Yankees first. This constant day/night doubleheader nonsense is a slap in the face to the players and fans, because god help us if fans get two games for the price of one.

During the World Cup, they said that there would be regional coverage for each game tonight. Of course, on ESPN.

ESPN I believe has exclusive rights to the 8pm timeslot, but I could be wrong on that.

Phillies/Red Sox tomorrow, when I can actually watch it (probably not a good thing). The Phillies claimed Rick White off waivers. I think he's a good pitcher, but it's not like the bullpen's been the problem. We just transferred Julio Santana to the 60 day DL to make the move, so no biggie.

complaining is fine. but every time i click on the thread he's regurgitating the same points over & over. listen, the tigers were horrible for 13 years. i didnt complain too much. maybe i just forced myself to deal with it.

It's different, though. The Tigers weren't built to win during that stretch. Money wasn't being invested in the team and the expectations weren't there. Many didn't figure the Cubs to be a force this season, but with the resources available, there's no reason things should've been this bad. The lack of accountability is probably more frustrating than anything happening on the field. Instead of doing something about the lack of patience at the plate, poor hitting with RISP and overall lack of fundamentals, all of the Cubs' woes have been pinned on the loss of Derrek Lee by the Cub brass.

There's no reason for a team that cost almost $100 million to build be one of the worst records in baseball. There's no reason for Neifi Perez to be getting this many starts in a week. There's no reason that a change of some kind hasn't been made, whether it be Dusty getting the pink slip or the hitting coach being let go, since it's clear whatever he is doing, it's not working on the team's hitting.

It's not as if they can't get runners on base. They've had seven baserunners in three innings today and have no runs to show for it. It's the story of the year and it's frustrating to sit through. Especially when it could've been avoided.

you're right 100%. i'm not saying you shouldn't complain. the cubs have honestly become laughable. anyway i was probably out of line. dont worry about me.

I take back all of the bitching about the Astros not getting games on ESPN. Joe Morgan is quite possibly the worst T.V. commentator this side of Hawk Harrelson. It was great. Not two seconds after Joe goes on and on about how the Astros can't challenge for the division because we don't have a left-handed power bat, Mike Lamb and Lance Berkman both hit 2-run shots about 450 ft outta the park. Fuck you, Joe Morgan.

Edit: And now with a 6 run lead, the announcers aren't talking about how well the Astros are playing but how the White Sox are having an off-night. Yeesh. Roy Oswalt's pitching like a man possessed.

Dude, it's one game, and I like the Astros, but I think another bat would really help your team.

Oh, I totally agree that another bat would help the team, but I was just complaining how the announcers were completely discounting anything good the Astros were doing tonite and attributing it to the White Sox playing poorly. For example, when Lamb and Berkman hit homeruns, it wasn't because they put good swings on the ball, but because "Javier Vasquez didn't throw that pitch where he wanted to.", but when Konerko hit a homerun it's because "Paul Konerko is a great hitter. He put a great swing on that ball. He's awwwwwweeeesome. "

The thing about getting a bat is, if the Astros do get one, they have nowhere to put him. Preston's not going anywhere. Burke's got centerfield locked up, and he's hitting very well. Berkman ain't going anywhere, and the infield's set. Anything short of trading Everett, Lidge, and Lane for Tejada isn't going to do anything to put a power bat in our lineup.
