This is for the people who've been watching for a while...I mean what happened to all of the wrestling shows that use to come on? Now its just Raw/SmackDown/IMPACT/ECW...I'm 21 now, but I remember being younger and looking foward to this...Discuss

 

Early 90s

-Monday- Prime Time Wrestling/Monday Night Raw

 

-Saturday-WWF Superstars/Challenge, WCW Saturday Night, (Late as Fuck) WCW WorldWide

 

-Sunday-WWF All American Wrestling-

 

Mid 90s

 

-Monday-Monday Night Raw/Monday Nitro

 

-Saturday-WWF LiveWire/WWF Superstars/WCW Saturday Night/WCW WorldWide/ECW

 

-Sunday-WWF Superstars(No Longer Syndicated)

 

Late 90s

-Monday- Monday Night Raw/WCW Monday Nitro

Please add and discuss shows Ive forgotten.... Which was your favs...

--There was one WWF show that came on WGN I remember before LiveWire but it didnt last long at all so I didnt bother adding it...I cant even remember the name..

World Class and then the USWA and then Global at 4PM on weekdays on ESPN was a big one for me.

WCW Saturday Night was to me, the perfect wrestling show. Sure, after about '96 they didn't have any big matches anymore, but you never really knew who was going to be wrestling. Out of the blue, it might be some jobber who you remembered from the WWF, etc. Plus, it was on at 5PM here (CST), so it was on in the evening, but not too late.

A few years ago back when local tv stations were not affialated with UPN/WB fulltime there were blocks of wrestling on the weekend latenight that had USWA, Nashville, NWA, ECW Hardcore tv. There was even some low budget wrestling show with a drunk as the host that had Jim Duggan smack him around at a bar.

There used to be WWF Mania also, with Todd Pentingill in the early 90s, before it got replaced with The Action Zone.

 

People always hated on Mania, but I thought that it was a fun show and that Pettengil was pretty decent on it.

In Kansas City in 1986-87...Channel 62 on Saturday mornings had a 6-hour block of wrestling...from 6 AM to noon. Started with UWF, then NWA, AWA, Central States, WWF, then World Class.

I remember Livewire, the late night wcw show, saturday night, challenge,superstars, ECW, Smoky Mountain Wrestling, and a local wrestling show on occasion in the south that would be on tv.

From 95 through early 98, me and my family used to have cable for a few months, then go back to not having cable for a month or two. So during the non cable months, I used to watch Superstars,Worldwide and Shotgun Saturday Night. All three shows did a good job of pleasing my wrestling fix.

 

When I did have cable, I watch all the shows. WCW Pro Saturday mornings, Buddy Lee Parker,Bobby Eaton,Jannetty and Barry H. was regulars on this show.

 

Then a hour later, I would turn to Livewire. It used to be a great show because it was like a one hour version of Raw minus the crap parts.

 

Then at 6:05, I will turn to TBS. The greatest show ever, the matches they deliver was awesome. On Sunday's, Main Event would get me ready for Monday Nights.

 

On my local cable access, I used to watch this show called wrestling power ( http://home.comcast.net/~wrespowr/main.htm ) It help me discover Puro wrestling,ECW and other indies.

Actually, Action Zone replaced All-American in late '94. Mania was replaced with Livewire in '96. There was also WWF Blastoff on WGN for a while in '96-'97. It was on right before Livewire and basically the same show (recaps mostly).

 

There were also WWF New York and 11:Alive in the late '90s. Actually, 11:Alive only lasted about a month and was hardly shown anywhere. Both shows were just Shotgun with different commentary.

WWF Mania was kind of fun for what it was...it was designed to cater to younger fans, and while a good portion of it was Monday Night Raw highlights, they'd sometimes have exclusive matches, and they'd do some unique interview segments, comedy bits, etc. Todd Pettengil hosted, and for a while his co-host was Randy Savage, which was kind of funny.

 

I was going to mention that WWF Action Zone was actually a pretty good show for a while. They had exclusive matches, including that famous Clique tag team match...I think eventually they phased it into being another recap show for RAW, and it kind of went downhill from there.

I liked the first few Action Zones as they were done w/ a Sportscenter type presentation. They would do over the shoulder graphics and talk about matches and various stories and then show highlights. I don't think that format lasted very long. Maybe just a few weeks?

I remember one town having Pro Wrestling this Week, NWA Worldwide, Deep South (Atlanta independent), Contintental (Birmingham), Memphis, and one of the WWF syndicated shows in a block, starting on Saturday morning. The Deep South show had awful production, dark and taped in a club but seemed a lot more real to many fans at the time than the cartoon WWF shows.

Living in Canada was terrific for wrestling fans in the late 80s. In addition to the WWF shows, there was a weekly IWA show (Dino Bravo's promotion run out of Montreal), plus TSN had the AWA and Stampede weekly shows, as well as Pro Wrestling Plus (the Canadian Pro Wrestling This Week, but hosted by the terrific Ed Whalen).

 

I remember that I didn't get Wrestling Challenge on cable for the first couple of years I was a fan -- the Syracuse/Watertown channels only had Superstars -- and I had to rely on being able to pull it in on UHF out of Rochester, which didn't always work.

Wrestling Challenge and Superstars were awesome. Gorilla/Heenan and Vince/Ventura were just awesome... then I remember the pure joy when I saw a WWF Superstars arcade machine for the first time in 1989.

Don't forget ECW on TNN on Fridays from 8:00pm to 9:00pm from 8/27/99 to 10/20/00.

 

That was always funny to me. For 3 weeks, WWF and ECW were on the same channel.
