TSM All-Time Baseball Tournament

Recommended Posts

I was just looking at the 97 Os schedule and while they ended up winning 98 games, they went 13-16 in september, so they could have easily won over a 100.

Made me all nostalgic and stuff looking back at that..those were the days..hard to belive it was 10 years ago.

Teams are seeded based on their regular season winning percentage, and the higher seeded team receives home field advantage.

Is it possible to post the overall ranking prior to the tournament? Thanks.

The way I undertand it, the rankings are based on W/L from that season. Hence the Mariners being at the top of the list. Marlins are that low due to the number of wins they had that year.

The '76 Reds and '72 A's are in the tournament.

Let's get this started.

1999 Texas Rangers vs. 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks won 92 games and defeated the New York Yankees in a fantastic World Series to win their first championship. The Texas Rangers won 95 games (the most in franchise history), but suffered an embarrassing first round sweep against the Yankees

Hall of Famers

Texas: [ivan Rodriguez], [Juan Gonzalez], [Rafael Palmeiro]

Arizona: [Curt Schilling], [Randy Johnson]

For ineligble players, players scoring 100 or better on Bill James' HOF Monitor are listed in brackets.

The Diamondbacks had strong pitching, led by Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson. Their offense was slightly above average thanks to the outstanding season of Luis Gonzalez. The Rangers had a very good offense, bad starting pitching but a great bullpen led by John Wetteland and Jeff Zimmerman.

'01 D'backs 6, '99 Rangers 4 (10 Innings)

WP: Albie Lopez (1-0)

LP: John Wetteland (0-1)

Sv: Byung-Hyun Kim (1)

Matt Williams hit a two run home run in the 11th to put the Diamondbacks ahead.

'99 Rangers 12, '01 Diamondbacks 11 (11 Innings)

WP: Danny Patterson (1-0)

LP: Robert Ellis (0-1)

Wow. I'm not even going to attempt to describe this. Let me just give you the play by play of the ninth inning. The Rangers lead 8-7, trying to close out the game...

Top of the Ninth

John Wetteland relieves Tim Crabtree

Tony Womack doubles

Craig Counsell sacrifices catcher to first, Womack to third

Luis Gonzalez hits a home run, Womack scores

Mark Grace flies to center

Reggie Sanders doubles

Erubiel Durazo singles, Sanders scores

Matt Williams doubles, Durazo to third

Jeff Zimmerman relieves John Wetteland

Steve Finley singles, Williams and Durazo score

Damian Miller grounds out, shortstop to first

Diamondbacks 11, Rangers 7

Bottom of the Ninth

Juan Gonzalez hits a home run

Byung-Hyun Kim relieves Erik Sabel

Rafael Palmeiro walks

Todd Zeile flies to center

Lee Stevens flies to center

Royce Clayton walks, Palmeiro to second

Tom Goodwin triples, Palmeiro and Clayton score

Mark McLemore triples, Goodwin scores

Ivan Rodriguez flies to center

Diamondbacks 11, Rangers 11

Todd Zeile led off the bottom of the 11th with a home run off of Robert Ellis to win the game.

'01 D'backs 2, '99 Rangers 1

WP: Miguel Batista (1-0)

LP: Esteban Loaiza (0-1)

Sv: Kim (2)

The Diamondbacks scored two in the fifth and held on for the victory.

'99 Rangers 2, '01 D'backs 1 (11 Innings)

WP: Mike Venafro (1-0)

LP: Greg Swindell (0-1)

Sv: John Wetteland (1)

Tom Goodwin hit an RBI single in the 11th to give the Rangers the lead.

'01 D'backs 6, '99 Rangers 5 (11 Innings)

WP: Erik Sabel (1-0)

LP: Mike Munoz (0-1)

Yet another extra inning game saw the Diamondbacks win when Mark Grace reached on Mike Munoz's throwing error, allowing Tony Womack to score.

'01 D'backs 8, '99 Rangers 5

WP: Curt Schilling (1-0)

LP: Rick Helling (0-1)

The Diamondbacks took an 8-1 lead and cruised to a series clinching victory.

2001 Diamondbacks win series 4-2

I was not expecting this series to be this good. Four of the six games went into extra innings, and the second game was the damnest thing I have ever seen in a baseball game, real or simulated. The Diamondbacks advance to face the 2001 Mariners in round two.

Wow... that Game 2 would be an instant classic. What's more amazing? The Rangers tied it up by scoring 3 runs on back to back triples with 2 out.

Here's hoping the other series can reach that level of craziness.

Hey, Al. Can you do a "series" MVP for each series as a fun aside?

This does look fun. 4 extra inning games!? Didn't the 01 world series have several extra inning games with the Dbacks? I seem to remember like every game in the middle going down to the wire.

Two of those went extra innings. Game seven was decided in the ninth inning.

The '05 WS had two extra inning games. One of them (Game 3, the 14 inning one) is tied for the longest ever WS game in terms of both innings and overall time. ...just sayin'.

1992 Toronto Blue Jays (Kahran Ramsus) vs. 1973 New York Mets (devo)

The Toronto Blue Jays won their first of two consecutive World Championships. The Mets charged from last place at the All-Star break to a division championship, and then stunned the Cincinnati Red Sox in the NLCS. The Mets lost to the Oakland A's in seven games in the World Series. Their 82 wins are still the lowest total for a World Series team in a full season.

Hall of Famers

Blue Jays: Dave Winfield, [Roberto Alomar], [David Cone]

Mets: Willie Mays, Tom Seaver

The Mets featured great starting pitching, an ace reliever in Tug McGraw, but terrible offense. The Toronto Blue Jays had a balance attack, good but not outstanding in every facet.

'73 Mets 2, '92 Blue Jays 0

WP: Tom Seaver (1-0)

LP: Jack Morris (0-1)

You might expect that if the Mets are going to pull out the upset, they will need to do it on the right arm of Tom Seaver. Seaver pitched a two hit shutout here, walking none and striking out eight. A dominant performance.

'92 Blue Jays 4, '73 Mets 3

WP: Jimmy Key (1-0)

LP: Jerry Koosman (0-1)

Sv: Tom Henke (1)

Dave Winfield's RBI double in the seventh gave the Blue Jays a 4-3 lead and they held on to win.

'92 Blue Jays 4, '73 Mets 0

WP: Juan Guzman (1-0)

LP: Jon Matlack (0-1)

Guzman and Mike Timlin combined for a five hit shutout.

'73 Mets 8, '92 Blue Jays 7 (19 Innings)

WP: George Stone (1-0)

LP: David Cone (0-1)

The Mets started Tom Seaver on short rest and took an early 6-1 lead. After Seaver left however, the bullpen fell apart and surrendered the lead. Both teams scored runs in the 17th. Felix Millan hit an RBI single with two outs in the 19th to drive in the winning run. The Mets tie the series, but burned their game five starter in the process.

'92 Blue Jays 8, '73 Mets 3

WP: Jack Morris (1-1)

LP: Jerry Koosman (0-2)

The Mets were forced to start Jerry Koosman on short rest and he surrendered seven runs in three innings.

'92 Blue Jays 6, '73 Mets 2

WP: Jimmy Key (2-0)

LP: Jon Matlack (0-2)

The Blue Jays took an early lead and never let up. Joe Carter's solo home run sealed the victory in the eighth.

Blue Jays win series 4-2

The Mets won a classic game four but paid a heavy price. They burned their game five starter forcing them to push Jerry Koosman up a day and to use Jon Matlack for game six. The Blue Jays face the 1910 Athletics in the second round.

Let's go O's! WHY NOT?

Here's a website that covers the season (and its build up) in excruciating detail if you're interested: http://www.birdsinthebelfry.com/1989.htm

God, I'm just thinking... Johan Santana vs. Bob Milaki...Fransisco Liriano vs. Jeff Ballard...this just doesn't seem fair. Oh well.

I'm so gonna beat down those Blue Jays...

Mike Boddicker could get the O's a W but I call the Twins in a 4-1 thrashing.

No he can't. Boddicker was traded after the '88 season to the Red Sox for Brady Anderson and Curt Schilling.

Cone took the loss? What was he doing in in the 19th?

The Mets tie the series, but burned their game five starter in the process.

I guess when you get to 19 innings, your bullpen becomes pretty depleted and you need to go to a starter.

Devo had the '73 Mets. The '88 club won 100 games, but since the 1986 Mets were already in I wouldn't have taken them. The '69 or even the '99 clubs might have fared better.

Falling in 6 games to a World Champ isn't too bad. I don't think the '99 club would have done all that much better but I could easily be wrong.

Also, I'm still a bit surprised Czech never picked a Cubs team to represent.
