Guest Soriano's Torn Quad Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 You'll often hear that "90 percent of everything is crap." I feel the percentage is higher for music videos, as the music video, as a medium, just tends to be overwrought, kitschy, or otherwise poorly done. The exercise here is to try and match an awful video with a good one, so we (or I) can watch good videos, as well as mock horrible attempts at art and/or commercialism. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fomiTa3Ryko My Bloody Valentine - "From Here Knows When" It looks like it sounds. Perfect synaesthetic harmony. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf-_RwiiVT0 Billy Joel - Uptown Girl Yeah, you could make an argument that it's so bad it's good, but I won't make that argument. Billy Joel is always to be taken at face value. It's Rob Schneider with backup dancers in a body shop. The black chauffeur with the perpetual "I'm surounded by fags" face isn't enough to redeem this, nor the fact that the song is a tribute to Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, whom I find pretty neat.
Ravenbomb Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 "Helena" by My Chemical Romance My favorite bad video. It comes across like a great satire of stupid whiney melodramatic emo videos. When the overhead shot of the leadsinger wallowing in his angst hits the screen, I defy you to not laugh. If Mel Brooks in his prime directed a video for an emo band, this would be it. I would love this video if I thought for a second they were in on the joke. "Frontier Psychiatry" by The Avalanches As someone who's tried to do a music video for songs consisting almost entirely of samples, and knowing how hard it is, this is a damn good way of going about it.
Red Baron Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 Whatever happened to music videos having bands playing music for the full duration of the song?
Smartly Pretty Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 that Avenged Sevenfold video, Seize the Day is so bad it's hilarious. absolutely mother fucking hilarious. he solos over his dead girlfriends corpse. I was actually just talking about this video with JJ Johnson a couple hours ago. Buddy Holly was an awesome video, on the other side of things.
Black Lushus Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 any rap video that starts off with cinema-like text gets an automatic DQ from me.
razazteca Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 Hooberstank - "The Reason" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EjC9k7U0Wzc and the new video by Silverstein "if you can see my soul" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEgCsYJVXxs that is currently on MTV. Its the same damn video about a bank robbery!
RHR Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 THE SUCK---Any emo bands video. Period. Just the sight of Pete Wentz makes me want to commit murder. THE NOT SUCK---Jeremy. Pearl Jam. Althought I think it ruined the song for me a little, the whole song and images conveyed get creepier everytime some nut job goes and kills 20 people. The part where he Eddie is saying "Try to erase this...from the Black Board" is really well done.
Gary Floyd Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 Sucks: Van Halen-Poundcake So bad, it's not good. Doesn't Suck: I love this video. He sure loves costumes.
Murmuring Beast Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 Simple Minds - All The Things She Said - Dated, over-the-top, but good all the same...Well, I like the song, alright?!
Vanhalen Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 Guns And Roses - November Rain Watch out for the RAIN OF DEATH!!!
Ginger Snaps Posted September 2, 2007 Report Posted September 2, 2007 "Helena" by My Chemical Romance My favorite bad video. They are in on the joke. Unless you think all of the overacting and over-the-top choreography is them trying to be serious-emo.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 I don't get what this thread is trying to accomplish. It's a given that most videos are bad; putting a good one and a bad one together isn't terribly illuminating unless you can draw some connection between any chosen two outside of their both being promotional clips. Why not just make a thread where you only post good videos?
Guest Soriano's Torn Quad Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 It seemed much better on the drawing board, I'll have to admit. I just thought it'd be fun to share good and bad videos. Wasn't a whole lot else happening here.
At Home Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 THE NOT SUCK - Windowlicker - Aphex Twin THE SUCK - Anything hair metal.
Guest Vitamin X Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 Euro-indie bands and example of how to use and how not to use animation in a video. The good: Blur- Coffee & TV Blur is one of my more favourite bands, so I'm a tad biased, but I really enjoy this video. It's just fun and light-hearted, and even a bit of sentimental value to it. The bad: Peter, Bjorn, and John- Young Folks I kind of like this song, even if it is ridiculously overplayed and over-marketed. But GOD, this video is just awful. I know that this particular zine-like style of animation is really popular nowadays, and that's fine, but it adds absolutely nothing to the video and it makes me want to just listen to the song without visual aid, as if that was what they were intending. The only enjoyable part of this video is watching the dumb fuck's face playing the bongos.
Guest Soriano's Torn Quad Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 Boy, I bet you guys could really see me slumping down in defeat up there, huh.
Smartly Pretty Posted September 3, 2007 Report Posted September 3, 2007 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NcDLdP4dZdY I like this
Nighthawk Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 Well, no harm in posting good videos. My favorite video is "Windowlicker", but here are some others I like: Wu Tang - "Triumph" Wu Tang with superpowers, Dirty unleashing killer bees on New York and jumping off a skyscraper, more cool shit. Dethklok - "Fan Song" My second favorite Dethklok song. On the simple side, but good stuff with the pig effigy and the flashing faces. Dethklok - "Go Into the Water" My first favorite Dethklok song. Actually not a video, but a live performance (well, of a cartoon), but one that could never possibly happen in real life, so I'd say it's a video.
Guest Vitamin X Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 Triumph is a decent video, but it's kind of similar to a lot of the hip-hop videos made in the 90's. Man, no wonder MTV went to hip-hop then, they really were making the awesome videos then. And most Dethklok songs are automatically awesome. I haven't seen the Go Into The Water episode, actually, so that was good. My favorite Dethklokvideo, however, is still Thunderhorse.
haws bah gawd Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 DOES NOT SUCK "March of Mephisto" - Kamelot - This video owns your soul.
Corey_Lazarus Posted September 4, 2007 Report Posted September 4, 2007 THE SUCK: An awesome song, one of Nevermore's best (IMO), ruined by an atrocious video that strays (poorly) into the "artsy" and "live" styles. THE AWESOME: So outlandishly awful it's great. It's a complete embodiment of Municipal Waste themselves: over-the-top, b-grade quality, but for some reason its awful humor works on all cylinders, and you can't help but enjoy it. It's not even the best song on the album, far from it (I'm a fan of "Born to Party," personally), but it works as a single.
