It may be just me, but it seems like being proud of being American has been made to look like something to be ashamed of. I've met few Americans with a sense of patriotism and the only ones I meet are dumb rednecks. What is it with patriotism in this American generation? I could be wrong but it just seems that to me.

No, you shouldn't. Regardless of why the 'dumb rednecks' are patriotic, and I don't mean this as an insult, I'm sure you have a few things in common with them as far as patriotism goes.

I've been pretty outspoken about my feelings on the Bush administration and its foreign policy, but Americans and the States in general have done some good things, and if you're patriotic about it, clearly you've noticed them.

And furthermore, I think if you're lucky enough to live in a nation where you can find things to be proud of, you should embrace it.

First one to say "I criticize my government, so it is I, not you, who is the REAL patriot" gets a dildo in the head.

I love the land and the general idea, not the people or the government.

I am very patriotic. However, just because you love something in general does not mean you cannot criticize it or that you have to love every little thing about it. I love my freedom of speech, the fact that my job wasn't chosen upon my birth, etc., but I hate how politics are played in this country. Is it better than living under a communist regime? Fuck yes it is, so I don't complain about it too much.

Ummm, I do complain. However, shit could be a lot worse, so I don't "complain about it too much," as I said in my post. See, a lot of people bitch and moan about the bad things they don't like about America. I say let those people live in countries where it is a lot worse for a year, and then I bet they wouldn't complain as much.

What I mean is, most American intellectuals I've met are either lefties who basically have no pride and patriotism, or right-wings who love their country in a racist way against the others. I hate generalizing but I just wanted to see other point of views. I think U.S.A is a beautiful country with a beautiful history and the new generations should be taught to love their country in a non Nazi way, or white trash way.

My English is not too good, sorry if anything sounds wrong, don't flame me.

Communism has never actually existed. Also, that's terrible reasoning not to complain.

Expand on the part about communism.

I agree about your other statement though. "It could be worse" is never valid for anything.

I'm intrigued as well. I assume it's along the lines of what I guy I know, who said roughly the same thing: that any time it's been in place per se, it's really been totaliariansm. There's no way I spelled that right.

Wasn't Brook Farm fairly close to the communist ideal? I'm not sure on this. I need to spend more time on my Furrierism.

A Communist society is supposed to feature no class divisions whatsoever, Socialism would be the closest to this any society has ever come. The name of The Bolshevik Party can be used for whatever policies they had at any particular point in time, but - in terms of actual Communism - Lenin believed that it would have to be established on an international stage after worker revolutions in many countries.

To clarify: Communism is the name of a political system rather than a party.

Hoff is right.

To go somewhat back to the original topic, almost as prevalent yet peculiar in its lack of a threatening or boastful nature, is the amount of Canadian pride there is, certainly much more than American from what I see these days. I mean, just look at TSM.. how many posters do we have whose names start with Canadian(then something or other). Well, 10 according to the member search, but still there is only ONE poster whose name starts with American here. You don't see me running around with a CubanLeo screenname.

Also, there's both an AmericanDragon and a Canadiandragon registered here. I demand a deathmatch.
