UFN - Silva vs. Irvin

Recommended Posts

Countdown show is on tonight at 11 PM.

Gonzaga is only guilty of being inconsistent, I think. He still has the talent to beat just about any HW in the UFC right now.

It's weird saying this given what's happened in the past with the Kevin Jordan fight but I'm not convinced Gonzaga has the heart to make it. I won't really blame him for folding against Randy because of the broken nose but I think, gas tank or not that he totally gave up against Werdum when the heat was turned up.

The countdown show for this was really good. I may have been the only person who watched it.

They put over Irvin's quest to break into the next level hard. They talked about how he's training with Muay Thai coach who is trying to pattern the style around Irvin's fighting, and how he's brought in a world champion Jiu Jitsu guy to teach him the ground, and how to use it for him specifically.

The countdown made it seem like even Irvin knows his shots are astronomically low, but that he's training his ass off so that he can possibly get that one hit in and win the fight. On the other hand, they showed Silva doing more "finesse" type Muay Thai, and he outright started LAUGHING at the idea that Irvin would try to stand with him.

They made Reese Andy seem like a huge threat for Brandon Vera, and showed IFL clips so that probably means UFC is/has bought them. If Andy wasn't 35, I'd be very worried for Vera, but who knows. Vera was blunt, saying that for Reese, he'll lock up in the Octagon, and that Vera himself knows that if he loses he might end up out of the UFC. Put a good spin on the fight.

Jesse Taylor/CB Dollaway...Eh. Nothing new there.

I see a difference in the pictures. Look at the muscles at 205. Pecs are much bigger, shoulders and arms more defined. It's subtle but also pretty obvious, I think at least. This is coming from someone who charts all of his workouts and keeps excel spreadsheets of his daily weight for the past few years so maybe my perspective is off.

I found it interesting that CB beat Jesse in a wrestling match at the college level.

Anderson Silva vs. James Irvin- After watching the countdown special I was tempted to go with the upset until I heard Irvin utter these words " I will win in the clinch". The last man who said that was Dan Henderson and well know the outcome.

Winner 2nd 2:09 RD KO- Silva

Brandon Vera vs. Reese Andy- I have no confidence in Vera and have only seen the clips package from Andy. Vera is so erratic but I think he will come in focused and win.

Winner TKO RD 3 3:54 Vera

Frankie Edgar vs. Hermes Franca- Franca by Unanimous decision.

Jake O'Brien vs. Cain Velasquez- O'Brien 2nd RD KO.

Kevin Burns vs. Anthony Johnson- Johnson split decision

C.B. Dollaway vs. Jesse Taylor- Taylor 1ST RD KO.

What'd everyone think of the end of Burns/Johnson. I thought it might end up a no contest or something of the like. Sucks that a loss would go on one's record because of that, but I guess shit happens.

It's amazing that a guy who lost every round of a fight AND eye poked his opponent at least 4 or 5 times before the finish ended up winning via a blatant finger to the eyeball. It was just as bad a decision as James Toney beating Hasim Rahman the other day because Rahman couldn't see after an accidental headbutt. How can you win a fight after being the one to commit an obvious foul?

That Markham headkick will be right up there as KO of the year material.

As for the rest of the show, Silva looks just as good at 205 as he did at 185 though Irvin offered basically zero resistance, Vera fought like a 205 pound Tim Sylvia, Burns getting the win is some BS i wouldn't be surprised to see overturned (at least it should), and Franca/Edgar was a damn good fight. Not bad for a free show.

Has to be overturned. He was dominated and he was warned about 5 times before winning with an eye poke that damn near scraped gray matter. It was total bullshit.

Not bad at all for a free show. James Irvin honestly never had any business being in the cage with Anderson Silva.

What do you guys think Cung Le and Forrest Griffin were talking about sitting next to each other all night? They're probably so similar.

Silva basically said "Bitch, please..." when Irvin went for the sidekick. What's nasty on the replay is that you can pinpoint where Irvin's skin around the cheekbone splits open from the ground punches. The match just further solidified Silva's current unfuckwithable aura.

This and the complete decimation of Tim Sylvia by Fedor made this a real fun night for MMA.

That was some show, both in a good way and a bad way.

I see a Liddell/Silva match by the end of the year, since Dana is rather desperate to get his guy back on top of the division.

And Silva is going to kill him. If Rampage took Chuck out with one punch to the chin, to quote Taz circa 1996/97: What do you think SILVA is going to do to him? You know him, Chuck!

Seriously, I don;t really see anyone threatening Silva after what I saw of him tonight.

The bad was the total bullshit decision against Johnson.

CB had the submission of the night for sure.

It was a good show overall.

Vera was clearly gassed after round 1. Reminded me of Swick's debut at 170, actually.

I was hoping for Silva to tap out Irvin to once again expose his one trick pony status but the "catch kick, then knock him the fuck out" worked just as well.

Cain. Fuck yeah. I shoulda bet more than 500 on him in the Playground.

Missed CB's sub. Bugger

Well with Okami injured it would appear that Anderson's next fight will be against Patrick Cote.

That's not even a fun fight. Cote has no chance.

I'm confused as to how exactly Burns won that.

Yeah, there are three calls to make there

No contest

deduct a point from Burns

or DQ Burns

Being that Johnson looked as though he couldn't continue it should have been a DQ win for Rumble or a NC

How Burns got a win out of an illegal strike that ended the fight is way beyond me. Rumble needs to protest that fight to the althletic comission.

I look forward to seeing the odds for Silva/Cote, Patrick would have to be one of the biggest underdogs ever.
