haws bah gawd Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 Kind of surprised MBV wasn't #1. It's been a while since I've seen that many people crammed in a theater watching the same movie.
Youth N Asia Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 I think Blart was a lock at #1, despite looking like total crap. Thought MBV3D would pull in number 2 based on all the sold out shows here, plus a more expensive ticket.
Craig Th Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 I thought Notorious was going to be number 1.
bob_barron Posted January 18, 2009 Author Report Posted January 18, 2009 I thought Notorious was going to be number 1. It was only on 1600 screens. Once I heard that, I knew it had no chance.
Dandy Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 I tried to watch Gran Torino last night, but it was sold out. The Toughman contest was in town, so I assume a lot of wives went to the movies while the men watched the Toughman. The restaurants and movie theater was packed as all hell, and I believe they were making signs for other movies that were sold out while we were getting ready to leave.
Gary Floyd Posted January 18, 2009 Report Posted January 18, 2009 Valentine did about what I expected, though it's nice to see an R rated horror flick do good in the box office. Fun movie too.
TheOriginalOrangeGoblin Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Good for Kevin James. I saw Paul Blart today and it's a pretty funny Die Hard parody (especially the Robert Davi inspired SWAT leader).
Naked Snake Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 I can't believe someone actually green lit Paul Blart: Mall Cop. Now it's the #1 movie in North America! WTF?!?!?!
Aero Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Come on now. This is the country where movies like Epic Movie, Date Movie, etc. usually end up with the #1 spot upon release, so what did you expect? Although, I will say, I don't think Mall Cop looks nearly as bad as most are saying. I have no plans to go out of my way to see it, but I'll probably watch it when I it's eventually on TV.
Black Lushus Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Kevin James strikes me as a small doses (not LITERALLY, of course) kinda guy, hence why he worked out so well in Hitch. He wasn't in it non-stop, so whenever he was, the parts were enjoyable. That's why he works on a sitcom, smaller doses. I don't think I can take his comedy routine for an entire movie. I haven't found a fat man consistently funny since John Candy, and most of his comedy DIDN'T center around his weight.
King Kamala Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 At the risk of sound blasphemous, I think Farley is kind of overrated. I think he's an incredibly fascinating figure but he's sort of one note . Not to say he's bad because he does that one note pretty well in five minute sketches but it gets kind of tiring in some of his lesser movies. John Belushi, on the other hand, though remembered as the originator of Farley's fat guys acts wacky and falls down funny shtick, could do impressions and did very well in those understated 12:50 type sketches on the show. Again, I like Farley but he's not in the league of John Belushi and John Candy in terms of great big man sketch comics.
strummer Posted January 19, 2009 Report Posted January 19, 2009 Farley could do some impressions though. Not a lot but he did have me rolling once when he did Benny from LA LAW in the Susan Dey episode. He could have done a lot of dialogue driven stuff but the writers always wanted him falling down and screaming
King Kamala Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 That's true, Farley didn't quite get the same chance that Belushi and Candy to portray other facets of his comedic talents.
Black Lushus Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 No love for Chris Farley, Lushus? Nothing beyond SNL.
bob_barron Posted January 20, 2009 Author Report Posted January 20, 2009 No love for Chris Farley, Lushus? Nothing beyond SNL. Tommy Boy is one of the funniest films of all time. And his cameo in Billy Madison is amazing. NO YELLING ON THE BUS.
King Kamala Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Tommy Boy and his cameos in Billy Madison and Dirty Work will forever put Chris Farley on the good list.
Black Lushus Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Dirty Work is one of my all-time favorite films, and I actually did like Chris Farley there....small doses, small doses.
bob_barron Posted January 20, 2009 Author Report Posted January 20, 2009 Dirty Work is one of my all-time favorite films, and I actually did like Chris Farley there....small doses, small doses. I think he's one of the funniest people of all time. His Tom Arnold impression kills me. Also: John Hancock? Everyone knows it's Herbie Hancock.
Black Lushus Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 I do have to admit, there's a line from Tommy Boy I always go to when talking about my brother-in-law, who has been in college for 8 years now: "A lot of people go to college for 7 years!" "yeah, they're called doctors!"
The Buzz Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 I'm a pretty big fan of everything Candy and Farley did, but can't get into Belushi all that much. Which is probably quite weird since I like some of his brothers work.

I am always under the belief that if Chris Farley didn't die, he would be looked at today the same way we look at David Spade.
RavishingRickRudo Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Did you live under powerlines as a kid?
HollywoodSpikeJenkins Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Farley carried Spade on his fat back with the ripped little coat on.
Lord of The Curry Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 "Richard, who's your favorite Little Rascal? Alfalfa or Spanky?" *Silence* "You sinner" God, Tommy Boy rules.
strummer Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Senior year of High School every guy in the class had pretty much memorized every line from Tommy Boy. In fact we were quoting it lining up for graduation (This was 97). . Actually Jr year we were in class and some kid said he needed to go to the library to do research for a report or something. About 5 minutes later he came back and the teacher asked him "Why are you back so soon, I thought you had to do research?" His response "They ran out, they ran out of books, they're all out" We were rolling
Craig Th Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 I use the "did you eat paint chips as a kid?" line all the time. I don't know about you guys, but when John Goodman does comedy, he is awesome. His character in Big Lebowski rocks all.
