Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 22, 2004 Inspired by the KJ-Greg Anthony discussion in the NBA playoffs thread; What were some memorable fights in sports for you? Mine... Chris Childs v. Kobe Bryant -- This was when Kobe was still pretty young, before the Lakers won any titles if I recall correctly. Anyway, the two got into a little argument, and Childs gave Kobe a quick 1-2, while Kobe just stood there in shock before they were separated. Alonzo Mourning v. Larry Johnson v. Jeff Van Gundy -- The 5-foot-8 bald White coach hanging on the 6-foot-10 Black NBA player's ankle, as that player throws punches with his former teammate/friend that miss by miles. Nice. Nolan Ryan v. Robin Ventura -- Old Man Nolan pounds the younger Ventura's head like a pinata. Riddick Bowe v. Larry Donald -- Back before they started scripting every pre-fight press conference brawl, Bowe popped Donald with a combo that made Donald react similar to Kobe in the above-described fight. Bowe went on to win the real fight.
Ripper 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2004 Chris Childs v. Kobe Bryant -- This was when Kobe was still pretty young, before the Lakers won any titles if I recall correctly. Anyway, the two got into a little argument, and Childs gave Kobe a quick 1-2, while Kobe just stood there in shock before they were separated. I think this was the first year they made it to the finals. Kobe hit Childs with a elbow in the face, childs pushed him and Kobe started to walk up to do the "I'M in your face like we are about to fight until someone breaks it up" then childs with the one two, about to hit him with the 3 and someone grabed his arm, thus saving kobe from the knockout. good fucking times. Shaq vs Eric Montross. Shaq punches Montross in the face with all his might....and Montross doesn't budge. But shaq falls backwards about 30 feet. Quite possibly the strangest thing I have ever seen. Montross just no selling the punch. If he could play basketball like he could take a punch, lookout buddy.
Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 22, 2004 I just remembered when Jerry Stackhouse (his rookie year I think) totally overreacted and tried to kick Jeff Hornacek's ass. Then there was the Shaq-Brad Miller incident. And I know it's not a fight, but I remember a game when a younger Shaq fell right on top of Vern Fleming, a pretty small backup PG for the Pacers. I thought Vern was dead.

Guest Redhawk Report post Posted April 22, 2004 Who was in the Lakers vs Kings fight Fox vs Christie? It was Rick Fox v. Doug Christie. When the fight spilled into the hallway, the entire Kings team joined in, along with Christie's purse-swinging wife. Then Shaq -- who was injured at the time and wearing J. Anthony Brown's pajamas on top of that -- showed up and EVERYONE on the Kings backed up (except Doug Christie's wife; she's 'bout it.)
Guest FrigidSoul Report post Posted April 22, 2004 May 20th 1976 At New York, Carl Yastrzemski clubs two homers, giving him five in two games, to tie a ML mark. Boston wins, 8–2. Boston P Bill Lee injures his arm in a fight with Yankee players, ending up on the bottom of a pile of players. Lee never really recovers from the injury. The fight starts when Lou Piniella, running on Dwight Evans, is gunned down at the plate and barrels into Fisk. Both come up swinging and both benches clear. Lee initially blames Graig Nettles for his injury but, after viewing tapes, apologizes to the Yankee 3B. Lee then blames Billy Martin for espousing a fighting style that brought the brawl on. I tried looking for images since its one of the most famous fights in the Boston/Yankees rivalry. Basically Fisk pounded the shit out of Piniella and somebody tackled Bill Lee from behind and ended his season. It was later said that Billy Martin purposely told somebody to take Bill Lee out. Which is why to this very day Bill Lee hasn't shed a tear over the untimely death of Martin, and in fact when asked what he did on the day of the big NY funeral for Martin he replied "I was out playing golf, enjoying an absolutely all around beautiful day.". It's not like Doug wears the pants in that family. Bob Probert vs. Marty McSorley. A fight that lasted an eternity in hockey terms. And I think they did it just for shits and giggles, too. The Great One vs. Esa Tikkanen. I have vague memories of this, but I remember it being pretty funny, because, well, it's Gretzky and Tikkanen. And I don't think any punches were actually thrown, but there was a lot of circling around...
bob_barron 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2004 Did Gretzky get his ass kicked there? Cause I remember in an interview I read he said he only fought once and he got his ass kicked. Jim McKenzie v. Tie Domi after Domi killed Niedermayer was pretty awesome
starvenger 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2004 Did Gretzky get his ass kicked there? Cause I remember in an interview I read he said he only fought once and he got his ass kicked. I think that may have been when he was in the Soo. Everyone fights in junior hockey, you know. The "fight" I was thinking of was basically a non-fight. But, he ALMOST got his ass kicked by Wendel Clark after the game 6 slash. McSorley, I believe, intervened on his behalf.
Vern Gagne 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2004 The Great One vs. Esa Tikkanen. I have vague memories of this, but I remember it being pretty funny, because, well, it's Gretzky and Tikkanen. And I don't think any punches were actually thrown, but there was a lot of circling around... Gretzky also "fought" Neal Broten. The North Stars vs Bruians back in the early 80's. Until the Sens-Flyers fight this season, held the record for most PM in a game. Better overall because it dragged into the stands. Braves-Padres. 1985. Something like 4 bench clearing brawls. A few year back there was a great one on one hockey fight. I'm thinking someone on Tampa was involved.
TheOriginalOrangeGoblin 0 Report post Posted April 22, 2004 Pedro Martinez vs Don Zimmer - Best. Fight. Ever! Patrick Roy & Claude Lemieux vs Mike Vernon & Darren McCarty - McCarty pounds Lemieux into a bloody pulp and Roy skates the entire ice surface to jump McCarty but Vernon cuts him off. The Entire Senators Team vs The Entire Flyers team - This was fun. Nothing beats Mike fisher fucking John Leclair up and Smolinski pounding Recchi into the ice. Plus some Flyer covering up when Chara grabbed him was hilarious.
starvenger 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2004 Plus some Flyer covering up when Chara grabbed him was hilarious. Can't say I blame him. Chara's not a goon, but he's a pretty solid 6'9" guy...

Drury37 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2004 Knicks Vs. Heat in 1997 and 1998 and Orioles Vs. Yankees in 1998 are three memorable fights that I can remember oh and Yankees Vs. Red Sox in 2003 if you can call that a fight. Thanks.

Conspiracy_Victim 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2004 Charles Barkley bodyslamming Shaq. Also there was a brawl a while back (like 1988 or so) between the Astros and Expos. Astros pitcher Danny Darwin nails an Expo (he was called Dr. Death for a reason) and everyone sprints to the mound. And it wasn't your typical baseball "fight", this brawl spread out foul line to foul line and ended up all over the infield. Best memory: Astros kangaroo court judge and pinch hitter Casey Candaele (about 5'6", 150 lbs.) picking up, slamming, and pummelling Expos pitcher and former teammate on the Astros Jeff "Cro-Magnon" Juden (about 6'7", 240). Funniest thing I've ever seen in a fight.
Slayer 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2004 Just a couple off my head right now Chad Kreuter and a couple other Dodgers brawl with Cubs fans in the Wrigley stands in mid-'00 A Flames-Mighty Ducks game in late '01 where player after player got ejected until the benches were practically empty Andre Rison and Deion Sanders getting into a pussy slap fight Hawaii-Houston bowl game in Hawaii last XMas Eve where, after the game went 3OTs, players from the two teams brawled for a good several minutes afterwards. The most memorable image from this is a Houston player diving and swinging his helmet into a sea of Hawaii players and getting mobbed for his troubles. bob_barron 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2004 How about the fight AFTER Golata v. Bowe. Golata gets DQed, the Polish people in the audience get pissed and pretty soon Jim Lampley is on the air looking scared out of his mind. It's hilarious

The most memorable image from this is a Houston player diving and swinging his helmet into a sea of Hawaii players and getting mobbed for his troubles. That was Christmas night, actually. But, still, that fight kicked ass. What about Derek Harper vs Jo Jo English from the 1994(?) playoffs?
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted April 23, 2004 How about the fight AFTER Golata v. Bowe. Golata gets DQed, the Polish people in the audience get pissed and pretty soon Jim Lampley is on the air looking scared out of his mind. It's hilarious That's my all-time favorite. The entire place was a brawl, and George Foreman had his dukes up through the thing. He was ready to go, even on commentary. After security and the cops got shit settled, Lampley and Larry Merchant actually thanked Foreman on air for keeping rabid fans out of the press box. Golota jacked a couple members of Bowe's entourage, too.

I thought Vern was dead. Poor Vern...knocked all of his teeth out, if I recall. I laughed my ASS off when Kobe got punked out by Childs. I also remember Reggie and Kobe, when Kobe whiffed on a punch ala Shaq and got speared into the scorers table for his troubles. Reggie and MJ also had a fight once in I think 93...with ONLY REGGIE GETTING EJECTED. I remember Tree Rollins trying to eat Danny Ainge's finger. Barkley vs Shaq in Barkley's last season...can't forget that one. I remember Jermaine & Big Nasty from a couple years back....I remember Williamson throwing the ball at him, not sure if it actually escalated into a fight. I know Jermaine has been suspended once for fighting since coming to Indy. And Larry Bird vs Dr. J.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted April 23, 2004 I remember Tree Rollins trying to eat Danny Ainge's finger This is the title for a song I'm going to write. I'm not sure about that. Other memories: - 2003 ALCS Game 4 - During a 1997 Rangers-Isles game, Dan Cloutier makes Tommy Salo his bitch many times over - Izzy Alcantara HBP, kicks catcher square in stomach or chest
Youth N Asia 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2004 Redwings vs Avalanche. The game after Lemieumx ran Drapes' face into the boards from behind. Just fight fight fight in that game. Wish like hell I had it on tape. My favorite image of the fight is Shanahan nailing Roy with a flying clothesline.
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2004 Boston Bruins vs. Rangers fans, with Milbury pummeling the fan with his own shoe. John Wensink challenging the entire North Stars bench to a figh, and having none of them step up (ok, not technically a fight, but it should have been a fight if the Stars had been tough enough to respond). The Habs and Flyers having a 20 minute fight BEFORE the game because that idiot Lemieux made a practice of shooting into the other team's empty net before the game. Speaking of Lemieux ... Neely literally lifting him up and smacking him head first into the corner boards of the Garden. And, it's probably only memorable to me, but Kenny Belanger getting game misconducts in the first period of his first two games as a Bruin. Total ice time was probably 3 minutes in the two games (combined). And, YNA, you can trade for or buy that game on most of the hockey fights pages. It's one of the more common ones, because of the TV coverage that it'd gotten.
AlwaysPissedOff 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2004 I just remembered when Jerry Stackhouse (his rookie year I think) totally overreacted and tried to kick Jeff Hornacek's ass. I remember that fight. Hornacek did something that pissed off Stackhouse so bad that Jerry turned around with only one foot on the ground(he was landing from a jump) and just cold-cocked Jeff in the mug. I laughed for a good 3 days afterwards, man. On the Bowe/Golota free-for-all, didn't Golota get clocked with a cellphone by one of Bowe's corner guys? I think it happened off to the side and the camera only caught Golota's reaction. Also, when they zoomed out and showed the entire arena at one point, I think you can see some poor schmuck getting clocked with a chair, heh...
The Ill One 0 Report post Posted April 23, 2004 Does anybody have a website for videos of the sport fights? Kazaa hasn't been helping much and I really want to see the Golota/Bowe and some of the hockey (or baseball) clear outs. Oh and since I rarely watch that many sports- I remember when Mike Piaza (Pizza?) chased down the poor guy and started brawling with him in the dug out. Oh and since I rarely watch that many sports- I remember when Mike Piaza (Pizza?) chased down the poor guy and started brawling with him in the dug out. Was that when the guy intentionally hit Piazza and then ran like a bitch so Piazza wouldn't kick his ass? One game I went to had a brawl: John Smoltz had just given up a grand slam and plunked the next guy he faced (John Cangelosi). Cangelosi charged the mound and everyone was going crazy. I clearly remember seeing Greg Maddux run out and want to kick some ass. My grandpa was sitting down and shaking his head while I was just going apeshit the whole time. The Braves got destroyed but it's one of the best games ever
