Vanhalen Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 What TV shows do you think made the greatest impact, maybe due to a new formula, the actors, the way it was shot etc etc?
Guest croweater Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 The one that immediately come to mind are "The Simpsons": can anyone remember a adult cartoon before them? South Park has probably made a big impact too in the animation world, pushing the boundries a little.
Ripper Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 Seinfield and Friends. There have been so many clones that it makes me cry.
Vanhalen Posted June 11, 2004 Author Report Posted June 11, 2004 The one that immediately come to mind are "The Simpsons": Actually, funny you should mention that, I was watching the second series boxset of the simpsons today, and thats what inspired the thread, I'm going to vote for Cheers, as you can make referneces from that to Seinfeld, Friends, Frasier, and even Star Trek:Deep Space Nine(Morn)
TheBigSwigg Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 How about the original Star Trek and the original Dragnet?
tbondrage99 Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 All In The Family Threes Company Happy Days
starvenger Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 I'm going to vote for Cheers, as you can make referneces from that to Seinfeld, Friends, Frasier, and even Star Trek:Deep Space Nine(Morn) Morn ruled it. I'm just going over the "modern" era. Cheers - yeah, like you didn't know. In that vein... The Cosby Show + Family Ties + Cheers + Night Court = Must See TV - Nuff said. Friends - there are definitely influences from Cheers on the show, but it helped usher in an era of ensemble sitcoms where everyone was young and (generally) single. And all of those clones sucked. Star Trek: The Next Generation - Action/Sci-fi/Fantasy syndicated shows owe a debt of thanks to Trek. Possibly the most popular syndicated show of all time. Survivor - If this show doesn't pull in the ratings that it did, we wouldn't have this boom in reality/unscripted television, including stuff like the World Poker Tour and TLC's programming. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire - Don't think it had an impact? ABC's fall to fourth place network can probably be traced back to 4-5 nights of Regis...

Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 The Twilight Zone - For basically innovating the sci-fi/horror anthology genre.
BlackFlagg Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 NYPD Blue did alot to push the barriers of Network TV
Ripper Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 "Married...With Children." Now THAT is a show that spawned some goddamned bad rip offs.
Anakin Flair Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 Buffy. Friends, though I loath to admit it. Star Trek and ST: DS9
Guest El Satanico Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 I can't believe there hasn't been a mention of All in The Family. It's one of the most important TV shows in History.
kkktookmybabyaway Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 I can't believe there hasn't been a mention of All in The Family. It's one of the most important TV shows in History. From tbondrage99 All In The Family Threes Company Happy Days And if it makes you feel any better that was the first show that came to my mind when I read this thread's title...
River City Rocker Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In If you've ever watched an episode, forget the dated jokes. Look at the FLOW of the program, with all of the quickie sketches and ancedotes. Doesn't that look frighteningly ahead of its time? It was the first true short-attention span show. -Ben
Guest MikeSC Posted June 11, 2004 Report Posted June 11, 2004 In terms of the technical side of shooting TV shows, "The Andy Griffith Show", if memory serves, was quite revolutionary. -=Mike
cynicalprofit Posted June 12, 2004 Report Posted June 12, 2004 No disrespect to the simpsons, but Beavis & BUTT-Head is more the reason for South Park then anything else. I really see that show as the launching point for getting the young cynical viewers back into watching tv again after being really burned out by it. I mean the show had no real message or meaning, and it just drew the cynics in. You don't need a happy ending for TV show to work.
HarleyQuinn Posted June 12, 2004 Report Posted June 12, 2004 Batman: TAS for animated series(superhero cartoons somewhat)
Guest El Satanico Posted June 12, 2004 Report Posted June 12, 2004 Beavis & BUTT-Head is more the reason for South Park then anything else. the show had no real message or meaning, and it just drew the cynics in. You don't need a happy ending for TV show to work. South Park episodes often have a message. I don't see a relationship between B&B and South Park, but I could see one between B&B and Family Guy.
Guest Choken One Posted June 12, 2004 Report Posted June 12, 2004 No show made an profound Impact like ALL IN THE FAMILY did. How can you fucking people be saying Simpsons, Friends and other shows? Simpsons haven't made ANY impact other then spawning some pop culture references...same with friends. With Emotional, Racial, Cultural, Ethical, religious, Sexist, sexual impact nothing has come NEARLY as close as All in the Family did.
Nighthawk Posted June 12, 2004 Report Posted June 12, 2004 Hm... Simpsons had no impact? You're pretty stupid, there. I Love Lucy though, yeah. I think I remember hearing that it was using multiple cameras first. Ozzie and Harriet as well. The entire format for that kind of show is largely originated there.
starvenger Posted June 12, 2004 Report Posted June 12, 2004 How can you fucking people be saying Simpsons, Friends and other shows? Simpsons haven't made ANY impact other then spawning some pop culture references...same with friends. For me the answer is simple - I'm judging shows that have had an impact during the time that I've been watching television. All in the Family, I Love Lucy, The Flintstones et al were all "before my time" so I'm not including them. I won't deny the impact they've had on television though. Speaking of shows, I have to add this one: Sesame Street. I can't believe that it slipped my mind.
MrRant Posted June 12, 2004 Report Posted June 12, 2004 Star Trek has had the greatest cultural impact of any show. Half of today's scientists grew up watching it and they inturn invented some of the things on the show. Plus first interracial kiss on television (sorta... read William Shatner's book for the info). Billion dollar franchise (books, movies, toys, attractions, etc, etc) with legions of fans. And let's not forget the campaign launched on NBC to bring it back from cancelled status.
Anakin Flair Posted June 12, 2004 Report Posted June 12, 2004 Hey Mr. Rant, how about: GI Joe. Think about all of the stuff that came from that cartoon. that definately made an impact.
