Best Summerslam

We voted on the Worst Summerslam a few months ago (Here), with 1995 winning. What does everyone think the best Summerslam is? The ones that are not included in the poll are the ones that are usually regarded as not being very good or being decent at best.

 

I voted 1998. It's one of my favorite shows, with a great Ladder match and main event.

I went for 1997. HHH/Foley in the cage was great, Bulldog/Shamrock was decent with a cool psycho finish, Austin/Owen was a great match prior to the Tombstone and Bret/Taker was very well done. Hell, even the LOD/Godwinns match was good.

1998 definitely, it was given a Wrestlemania-like treatment. 2002 is right behind.

I went w/ 1991. The feel-good event of the 1990s.

SummerSlam '98, while not the greatest wrestling card was a high point of the Attitude era. The Austin/UT match was a great example of a slow build as they started teasing it as early as the May PPV that year and the TV built it up really well that summer. Rock's performance in the Ladder match with Triple H turned the fans to him even more. The mid card was solid enough (Jarrett/X-Pac, Venis/Brown, NAO/Foley) that just about every match had a story and was passable in the ring.

The 2002 Summerslam had the best wrestling I had seen in a while. I remember there was a lot of anticipation for the HBK/HHHuh match, as well as for the Rock/Brock match. I liked Rey's debut match against Kurt and the IC title match between RVD and Benoit.

 

How bad was the 1996 Summerslam? I stopped watching wrestling for a while during that period. I want to know what you guys though of it.

I don't hate it as much as most people do, but the only bright spot on the show is really the HBK-Vader main event. It's a good HBK vs. big man main event. Then, there's the Boiler Room Brawl between Undertaker and Mankind, which is just roughly 20 minutes of slow brawling in a dark boiler room, and then a decent fight out to the ring where Paul Bearer turns on Taker. Everything else is either horrible or bad for the most part.

Where's 1989? It's a damn good Slam with Rude/Warrior, Harts/Busters, two good(well one watchable) 6 man's and some other fun stuff.

 

But the best is 1998. The peak of the original Attitude era, IMO.

98 is my favorite. Except for the Oddities BS, the rest of the show is all enjoyable.

Yeah, the rest of the show is unremarkable (Savio vs. Owen, Bulldog vs. Sid, Mero vs. Goldust) or horrible (the tag title match).

It's amazing that not even HBK/Ramon II could save the rest of the crappy card in the '95 edition.

1998 gets my vote. I wonder why 1995 was voted the worst though...1990 I think was worse with a bunch of 3:00 matches and a really bad main event.

 

1998 had a very good Taker-Austin title match, a great ladder match that boosted The Rock into the Main Event the next few months, a good opener between Val & D'Lo, and everything else was entertaining, even the Comedy Match.

I actually like SS 95. The ladder match is great, Hakushi/Kid is fun, HOROWITZ WINS~! and Bret vs. Glen Jacobs Kane Isaac Yankeem is decent. Sure, the show had a horrible main event and meant nothing in the long run, but it wasn't THAT bad.

I love 1991 but I went with 2001 because that is one of my favorite PPV's in the history of wrestling.

I always seemed to prefer Summerslam over Wrestlemania for the quality of the matches. Another reason is that Summerslams rarely bomb. What pissed me off was that that distinction was shattered with last year's SS. The Shane/Bischoff match was horrible and there was no point of HHHuh retaining the title. He was injured. I'm not a Goldberg fan, but they should have given him the title. Look how over he was.

I think 1998 was the best of them all. They had a ton of things that made the show what it was.

-Ladder match is the second best one I've ever seened

-Austin vs Taker which is vastly underrated and the build for it was great.

-The crowd was into the show

Second best is probably 1989 and 2002 coming in third. The only reason for 1989 was second, was because I was there.

The Lion's Den match was very good and I enjoyed it a lot because they actually built up to it very well.

02 was probably my all-time favorite, followed closely by 91 (my first PPV) and 95.

 

I never really cared for 98, though. It had (IMO) the best all around PPV build ever, but that just made for an underwhelming show by the time it actually rolled around. I mean, it was a pretty good show, but the way they hyped it up, I was expecting something mindblowing and what we got disappointed the hell outta me.

My take on ss' 94 was that it was good,overall. The IC bout and the cage march were excellent.

I went with 2002. It was a great show and was hands down the best PPV of 2002. SummerSlam 1997 comes in a close 2nd though.

2002, there weren't a bad match on the card. Matches were either decent, fun or good.

I voted for 92. It's always been one of my all-time favorite ppvs. I like the feel of the show. I like both the Money Inc. vs. LOD and Shawn vs. Martel matches. I like the build up as to which corner will Perfect be in. And the actual Savage-Warrior match is excellent as well. And of course the Bret vs. Bulldog IC title match is an absolute classic, as should be evidenced by how far it made it in the best NA match ever tourney not too long ago.

Surprised with the '91 love. I re-watched it the other day and outside of Perfect/Bret nothing really captured me. Nastys/LOD, Disasters/Whackers and Mountie/Bossman were bleh. Virgil/DiBiase and the opening six man was passable. Valentine/IRS was boring and the 'main event' blew. And then, they ended the show on a wedding.

 

Got to be 2002 for me. A hot crowd and every match was decent to awesome...even Taker/Test is watchable.
