Downhome Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 I'm mainly currious if any of you guys have seen it yet. It's been in theaters since June or so, and is slowly opening up more and more. It's also rated PG, so there isn't any cussing or anything in this film, which was something of a breath of fresh air. Well, this film opened up in Anderson, SC today and I went to check it out. Simply put, I loved it! I love this type of comedy, it's just so dry and odd that it really connects with me. I can't wait for the DVD, and I might just go watch this one in the theater again. The main thing about it is that it didn't have too much of a plot, and even if you love the movie, once it is over and you are walking out you might just be asking yourself "why?". Why was it made, what was the purpose? Then, it'll hit you and you'll want to see it again. If you are a fan of Wes Anderson's work, I'd be wiling to bet that you'll enjoy Napoleon Dynamite. It has a ton of great quotes also. One of my favorites is this one. "But my lips hurt REAL bad!" Go to the official website and watch the trailer and a few clips from the film, it's great. http://www2.foxsearchlight.com/napoleondynamite/ Sincerely, ...Downhome...
razazteca Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 I need to see this but I have to wait until it finishes downloading. I see the commercials for it alot on tv and can't help not to laugh at it everytime because of the voice!
Mik Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 "I caught you a delicious bass." Best line ever.
Vyce Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 I havent' seen it, but I find myself intrigued by the commercials and the titular character. "Hey Napoleon, gimme some of your tots!"
LJSexay Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 this was one of my favorite films of the summer. "Wanna play me?"
Lil' Bitch Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 The movie looked like garbage. but with you guys putting it over, I might as well check it out.
Ted the Poster Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 <--- obv. loves the movie Seriously, I shill this movie to everybody I know. It is hands down one of the funniest, and downright oddest movies I've ever seen. There are too many quotable lines in it to even count. "Napoleon, don't be jealous just because I've been chatting online with hot babes all day." DH, you watched past the credits didn't you?
Downhome Posted September 4, 2004 Author Report Posted September 4, 2004 DH, you watched past the credits didn't you? No I didn't! I didn't know about that extra part untill I got home, and then after I started this thread. It's one of the many reasons that I might go back to watch the movie again.
Youth N Asia Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 Way too long in between laughs. Some of the one liners and food tossing is pretty funny. But I was so bored watching this. Some of the stuff I'd watch and think "is this suppose to be a joke?" And the part after the credits was long and boring
Cheex Incarnate Posted September 4, 2004 Report Posted September 4, 2004 This movie was bad, bad, bad. Not sweet in the least. It was one big quirk with only 1 or 2 genuine laughs. Napoleon Dynamite feels like a 2 min. commercial stretched to an hour and twenty minutes. Just plain bad. -Cheex
Guest SP-1 Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 I saw it with a crowd comprised entirely of my fellow students from my college. I kid you not, it's one of the few times I've laughed almost the entire time from the opening shot to the credits and beyond. When it hits the cheap theater I might see it every night.
Placebo Effect Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 Didn't like it. ** out of *****. I love Wes Anderson, Todd Solondz, and Christopher Guest, but it simply wasn't entertaining.
Guest Flyboy Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 This movie was the most overhyped piece of shit I've seen in a long time... I'm the easily amused type, but ND wasn't funny.... at all.
nogoodnick Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 I wouldnt call it overhyped since 75% of the people I know who saw it LOVED it, myself included. I laughed so damn much. I do know some people that just didnt like it though.
Ted the Poster Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 It's really an acquired taste sort of thing. People I've talked to either loved it or just didn't get why others thought it was funny. Guess you just gotta like the sort of deadpan, of-the-wall shit offered in the film.
Downhome Posted September 5, 2004 Author Report Posted September 5, 2004 I've found that this film is one of the best examples of "you'll either love it to death or totally hate it" ever.
Guest Flyboy Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 I wouldnt call it overhyped since 75% of the people I know who saw it LOVED it 75% is definitely enough to be considered overhyped.
NoCalMike Posted September 5, 2004 Report Posted September 5, 2004 watching the trailer made me think it is an MTV/ratings friendly version of Gummo.....hahaha.
Guest SP-1 Posted September 6, 2004 Report Posted September 6, 2004 I wouldnt call it overhyped since 75% of the people I know who saw it LOVED it 75% is definitely enough to be considered overhyped. How? That's 3/4 of an example who absolutely loved it. Were it overhyped, it'd be 25% cramming it down everyone else's throats.
Youth N Asia Posted September 7, 2004 Report Posted September 7, 2004 Although for some reason this line killed me. When Deb shows up at the door for the first time trying to sell crap to Napoleon. "I'm trying to save money for college." Then Nap's brother mutters "Your mom goes to college" in the background and just gets this shit grin on his face like it was the greatest line ever.
justsoyouknow Posted September 7, 2004 Report Posted September 7, 2004 How many times can you laugh at the same exact joke?
Guest Dids Posted September 8, 2004 Report Posted September 8, 2004 I haven't seen the movie, but I'm amused by somebody who liked "Blowout" mocking anybody's taste.
bob_barron Posted September 8, 2004 Report Posted September 8, 2004 I finally saw the movie. To me it felt like an episode of Saturday Night Live- every scene was like a skit. It worked for the most part but like SNL, things always fall flat or drag on to long. I thought the movie worked for the most part and it was an enjoyable way to spend 90 minutes. Plus they made a pinata that looked like Hailey Duff's character. Gold. Her nose is fucking distracting
Rob E Dangerously Posted September 8, 2004 Report Posted September 8, 2004 I just saw the movie today, and it was funny, but i'll have to see it again because I was in an AMC theater and one other person was there. It hits close to home. And the FFA rules you.
Downhome Posted December 23, 2004 Author Report Posted December 23, 2004 Check this out guys. By Brett Sporich LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - The geeky comedy "Napoleon Dynamite," a little movie that made a big splash at the summer box office, sold 60% of its initial shipment during its first day on video store shelves Tuesday, according to executives at 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment. This represented sales of about 1.4 million combined DVD and VHS units. Studio executives said they were working to ship an additional 1 million DVDs before Christmas Day. The Fox Searchlight film, which earned roughly $44 million at the domestic box office, stars Jon Heder, Efren Ramirez and Tina Majorino as misfit high-schoolers in Idaho Last week, the video champ was Fox's "I, Robot," starring Will Smith, which topped both the sales and rental charts in its first round. The sci-fi thriller sold more than 5 million combined DVD and VHS units in the five days ended Dec. 19, including 2.6 million on its first day alone, according to Fox. It also generated an estimated $13.5 million in consumer rental spending, or 9.3% of its $145 million box office take, according to Video Store magazine research. DreamWorks' "Collateral," starring Tom Cruise and Jamie Foxx, debuted as the nation's second-best-renting video last week, earning an estimated $13.3 million, or 13.2% of its box office take, according to Video Store magazine. Reuters/Hollywood Reporter I bought mine in a Best Buy near Charlotte on Tuesday, but everywhere near me is totally sold out of this DVD. I knew that this film would be a huge cult hit, but I didn't imagine that the DVD would fly off the shelf like this. I wish they could turn this film into some sort of weekly TV show, it could be great. Did any of you pick this DVD up yet also?
Youth N Asia Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 It's 3 months later...and the movie still sucks
King Kamala Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 I can't believe it's success, it's basically a slightly more mainstream palatable, family friendly, Wes Anderson movie. Good flick though.
nogoodnick Posted December 24, 2004 Report Posted December 24, 2004 I have to admit that upon watching it for a 2nd time it was way less funny. But the first viewing had me cracking up.
bob_barron Posted December 24, 2004 Report Posted December 24, 2004 I really enjoyed the movie but I don't know if it would hold up again on DVD. It was such a fun movie though
