Guest Seven Sins Report post Posted September 18, 2004 There's a guy I went to school with who had NO idea at all who Megadeth,Metallica and Black Sabbath were. This all came about after a discussion with him on Metal and he kept asking " Who?" after each time i said one of those Bands.
spiny norman 0 Report post Posted September 19, 2004 I can understand someone not knowing who Megadeth is, and I envy someone who has never heard of Metallica, but it's pretty disgraceful to have never heard of Sabbath. Then again, if you played Paranoid that usually gets some recognition from people.
Giuseppe Zangara 0 Report post Posted September 19, 2004 I find I don't care that people haven't heard of this or that band; what steams my beans are the ones who act the authority on a particular artist/style/etc. when they're just talking a bunch of shit. I may be some indie elitist or something but getting angry because someone hasn't heard of the Clash or whoever is pretty fucking stupid.
Red Baron 0 Report post Posted September 19, 2004 In a class of 200 last year, some one said they have never heard of The Beatles. He didn't sound like he was joking either.

Guest The Decadent Slacker Report post Posted September 19, 2004 Last week I was buying "Who's Next" from a CD shop. The woman behind the counter went "The Who? What a funny name for a band". She had not heard of them, despite the fact they just toured here about a month ago. So I fully relate to your story. Though I think not having heard of The Who is worse than not having heard of The Clash. This infuriates me. Sure, I'm biased as they're my all time favorite, but...wow. In a music shop no less. My god. That's like someone yelling about "Beatles" being spelled wrong. Not knowing who the Who are is just sad. Tirade over.

I may be some indie elitist or something but getting angry because someone hasn't heard of the Clash or whoever is pretty fucking stupid. This is basically my feeling as well. Kids (by which I mean people under 20) for one, don't listen to anything that's old. Many of them don't know who, say, 311 is, which is actually worse than not knowing Clash or Zep because they were in the public eye in this person's lifetime. If they don't care about a particular style of music, or music in general besides what's popular, why should I expect them to know who bands from 30 years ago are or fault them for not? Acting like you know when you don't is much worse.

Guest El Satanico Report post Posted September 19, 2004 AoO- What is wrong with Lynyrd Skynryd? He lives in the midwest...enough said I like them, but it's easy to understand someone from this general area despising them. The same can be said of any mainstream classic rock in the midwest. Guest El Satanico Report post Posted September 20, 2004 Not knowing Jeff Buckley really isn't that bad. It's not like he was some huge mainstream name. Someone not knowing Jeff Buckley is like someone not knowing Klaus Kinski.

Did the convo go like this: "Yeah, the Misfits were this band, they were around in the 80's, but when they got this cooooooooooooooool new guy in the mid 90's they really started rocking gnarly, duuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuude." Guest Agent of Oblivion Report post Posted September 20, 2004 Hey, LA Woman was pretty good. I like them when Jim is really drunk and fat. Lynyrd Skynyrd are a bunch of hicks that play the same old bullshit over and over again. The plane crash was god trying to make things right, but man once again stupidly defied his will. As a classic rock radio band, they're perfectly suited for that sort of thing, it's just the cheap emotional attachment people have to their bigger songs, almost out of obligation. It's like the people that call Stairway the greatest thing ever. The two often overlap. So basically, what Satanico said. Oh who am I kidding. They suck. Slayer 0 Report post Posted September 20, 2004 "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Freebird" are those songs that if you turn on your classic rock station, odds are 10:1 that song will be on That or "You Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet"
Guest Dynamite Kido Report post Posted September 20, 2004 Rando, I feel your pain. I couldn't tell you how many times I had to explain who the Clash was to people that claim to like "punk". Considering that I generally listen to hip hop, people are usually surprised when I tell them I am a Clash fan.
Edwin MacPhisto 0 Report post Posted September 20, 2004 Surpassing the Doors isn't that hard. I loathe idiocy. But then again, it's because of people like you that radio and the Billboard charts suck such a dick these days. "Lean Back" won't exist in three weeks. The Doors have perservered for over 35 years. I think we've had this discussion several times before, and the argument that usually pops up is "The Velvet Underground did everything the Doors were doing better." And I agree with that. The Doors are okay but will never be in my pantheon. "Lean Back" is pretty weak, though.
Skywarp! 0 Report post Posted September 20, 2004 If you're a punk, then it could be shameful to not know who the Clash are. Otherwise, it's just not that person's taste to care or seek them out (rap or country fans). Should they be chastized for not hearing about them? In a way, it seems like people that live in pop-culture caves must be doing something right. I know everyone in here read in jealous awe of the person who doesn't know Metalica. We would be a better society if less oozed through our bullshit filters.
Mecha Mummy 0 Report post Posted September 20, 2004 All right, I'll bring a b-grade story of this stuff here... In 8th grade I did a project comparing the popularity of grunge music in the early 90's to the current state of J-Pop (Yeah, a bit random, but it was better than some of the other ideas I had for it), and the other students were supposed to take notes on the presentation to show they were paying attention. Apparently one of the girls had no idea who Nirvana was and referred to them as "Nell Vana."
nl5xsk1 0 Report post Posted September 20, 2004 Rando, how old are your co-workers? If they're young (say early 20s or younger) then there shouldn't be any surprise that they don't know the Clash. Other than "Rock the Casbah" and "Should I Stay or Should I Go" the Clash haven't released anything in their lifetime ... and especially if they're into rap and/or country. It'd be like a fan of punk not knowing Afrikaa Bambaataa (spelled wrong I'm sure), who was a pretty big early-rap artist. More people will learn of the Clash because of the article in Entertainment Magazine than any of us care to admit. And, truthfully, when you explained that you were smiling because you listened to the Clash, I wouldn't say "who?" ... I'd say "why?" /not a Clash fan
