Special K Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 I shall start. Pretty much in the order I thought of them. 1. Sonic Youth- Teen-Age Riot A very unassuming that steadily builds to one of the rockinest openings EVA! 2. Orbital- I wish I had Duck Feet From the somewhat revolutionary Snivilization album, Orbital takes a sample of rain falling and slows it down and morphs it into a beat. Must be heard to be believed! 3. Beehtoven - Pathetique symphony. Great song, with one of the most oninous chord builds ever. Helps that I can play it. 4. Carmina Buranna - I'm sure I just spelled that wrong, but this is the quintessintial bombastic opening.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 That first minute-and-a-half of "Teenage Riot" is awful, actually. The rest of the song is great.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 I have always loved the opening to Type O Negative's "Christian Woman." The opening line of Forgive her, for she knows not what she does leading into the minor chords on the keys gets me every time.
Giuseppe Zangara Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 I like how it builds. I'd forgive it if Kim Gordon never opened her mouth. "Say it, don't spray it!" is so, so embarassing.
Red Hot Thumbtack In The Eye Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk. The intro Alsvartr merging into Ye Entrancempirium basically lets you know that you're about to ride a tornado straight through hell. 'Winds and storms. embrace us now Lay waste the light of day Open gates to darker lands We spread our wings and fly away' The ultimate musical build up and still the number one metal album of all time.
Special K Posted November 30, 2004 Author Report Posted November 30, 2004 Well, yeah, spirit desire is a classic line, and say it don't spray it is dumb. With Sonic Youth it's ALL about the guitars though.
Lord of The Curry Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 "All along the watchtower" comes to mind immediatly.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Frenzied tapping at the beginning of "Sugar Coated Sour." Nile's "Give everybody a chance to take a breath, stretch, crack their back and knuckles, and get ready to go batshit" acoustic part on Unas..
ArkhamGlobe Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Can's Oh Yeah immediately pops into my mind, as did Primal Scream's Kill All Hippies.
The Czech Republic Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 "Where The Streets Have No Name" has always been especially cool to me.
Black Lushus Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 didn't we do this once not too long ago? "Angry Chair"-Alice In Chains
nl5xsk1 Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 The bass intro to "Waiting Room" by Fugazi KRS-One doing the 'rap' leading into the bass intro of "Clobberin' Time" by Sick of It All The little kids doing the Pledge of Allegiance before Agnostic Front's "... and Justice for All" and then the skinheads doing it before "Live at CBGB's" album
1234-5678 Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Guns N Roses "My Michelle" and "Rocket Queen" The Doors "Back Door Man" and "You're Lost Little Girl" Led Zeppelin "Achilles Last Stand"
B. Brian Brunzell Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 Guns N Roses "My Michelle" and "Rocket Queen" I quite like the opening bass line and build to the main riff for "It's So Easy" as well.
rising up out of the back seat-nuh Posted November 30, 2004 Report Posted November 30, 2004 I love the intro to "Could Well Be In" by The Streets.
Nighthawk Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 "Gateway to Hell" - Thrill Kill Kult Standard TKK sample to start, followed by sick guitar licks and in my opinion the two best, and best used, samples of TKK's career, straight into the glorious industriothrash that made their name for them.
EricMM Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 Indeed we did do this before, and I'll repeat my choice: "I've got something to say, I killed a baby today" (Last Caress)
Edwin MacPhisto Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 I always mention the cheesy opening monologue from Prince's "Let's Go Crazy," and I'll do it again, damn it.
Corey_Lazarus Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 The Misfits, in any era, have great intro's in their songs. They were significantly better during the Danzig era, but then again so was the band (though the guitar work on American Psycho and Famous Monsters is superb). I love the opening to Nevermore's cover of "The Sounds of Silence." It plays a slightly distorted, yet acoustic, lick from the original tune, and then overdrive kicks in and everything picks up volume, and everything is THRASHED UP while keeping the original note progression going. Though I hate the band, Hatebreed's "Before Dishonor" has a fucking awesome intro. The rest of the song is pretty good, but nothing matches the first 30 seconds or so. And, of course, the obligatory mention of "Natural Born Killers" by Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. Missile launches, explosion while the main "lick" of the song plays, and then Dre comes in rapping with the line "journey with me in to the mind of a maniac / doomed to be a killer since I came out of the nutsack."
Red Baron Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 Cradle of Filth cover of Hallowed Be Thy Name is damn good. Hanger 18 by Megadeth Painkiller by Judas Priest
tominator89 Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 The Great Southern Trendkill by Pantera
IllustriousOne Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 Beethoven didn't write Pathetique. Pathetique was Tchaikovsky's 6th symphony. Unless of course you're talking about the Sonata. Which you aren't. http://www.move.com.au/disc.cfm/3277
tominator89 Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 ...you like Pantera, huh... Yep. That's the first song that came to mind when I read this topic.
Guest Agent of Oblivion Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 I used to like Pantera.
Guest Loss Posted December 1, 2004 Report Posted December 1, 2004 "All along the watchtower" comes to mind immediatly. That's exactly what I was thinking. Sadly, I wish I liked the rest of the song as much as the very first part of it.
