Greatest openings to songs?

Recommended Posts

I shall start. Pretty much in the order I thought of them.

1. Sonic Youth- Teen-Age Riot

A very unassuming that steadily builds to one of the rockinest openings EVA!

2. Orbital- I wish I had Duck Feet

From the somewhat revolutionary Snivilization album, Orbital takes a sample of rain falling and slows it down and morphs it into a beat. Must be heard to be believed!

3. Beehtoven - Pathetique symphony. Great song, with one of the most oninous chord builds ever. Helps that I can play it.

4. Carmina Buranna - I'm sure I just spelled that wrong, but this is the quintessintial bombastic opening.

Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk.

The intro Alsvartr merging into Ye Entrancempirium basically lets you know that you're about to ride a tornado straight through hell.

'Winds and storms. embrace us now

Lay waste the light of day

Open gates to darker lands

We spread our wings and fly away'

The ultimate musical build up and still the number one metal album of all time.

Guest Agent of Oblivion

Frenzied tapping at the beginning of "Sugar Coated Sour."

Nile's "Give everybody a chance to take a breath, stretch, crack their back and knuckles, and get ready to go batshit" acoustic part on Unas..

The bass intro to "Waiting Room" by Fugazi

KRS-One doing the 'rap' leading into the bass intro of "Clobberin' Time" by Sick of It All

The little kids doing the Pledge of Allegiance before Agnostic Front's "... and Justice for All" and then the skinheads doing it before "Live at CBGB's" album

"Gateway to Hell" - Thrill Kill Kult

Standard TKK sample to start, followed by sick guitar licks and in my opinion the two best, and best used, samples of TKK's career, straight into the glorious industriothrash that made their name for them.

Indeed we did do this before, and I'll repeat my choice:

"I've got something to say,

I killed a baby today"

The Misfits, in any era, have great intro's in their songs. They were significantly better during the Danzig era, but then again so was the band (though the guitar work on American Psycho and Famous Monsters is superb).

I love the opening to Nevermore's cover of "The Sounds of Silence." It plays a slightly distorted, yet acoustic, lick from the original tune, and then overdrive kicks in and everything picks up volume, and everything is THRASHED UP while keeping the original note progression going.

Though I hate the band, Hatebreed's "Before Dishonor" has a fucking awesome intro. The rest of the song is pretty good, but nothing matches the first 30 seconds or so.

And, of course, the obligatory mention of "Natural Born Killers" by Dr. Dre and Ice Cube. Missile launches, explosion while the main "lick" of the song plays, and then Dre comes in rapping with the line "journey with me in to the mind of a maniac / doomed to be a killer since I came out of the nutsack."

"All along the watchtower" comes to mind immediatly.

That's exactly what I was thinking. Sadly, I wish I liked the rest of the song as much as the very first part of it.
