DIMEBAG DARRELL SHOT ONSTAGE IN COLUMBUS, OH

Recommended Posts

It should have been somebody better, because that's about the coolest way to die. He stole the best death from someone more deserving.

Oh yeah, I'm also in tears. Rest In Piss.

I wish it was Axl Rose...

At least then Chinese Democracy would come out.

Anyways, yeah, I wasn't a big fan, but it's a total shit way to die. Since the shooter was killed as well, I guess we'll never really know the motive.

R.I.P. Dimebag

I think an incident like this was bound to happen in any genre of music, not just metal.  The lack of security and easy accesibility to the musicians has always made it feasible for one to do this if they had wanted.

I think that it's cyclical. After FSU hamer-handled a kid nearly to death in a pit, the Boston shows got REALLY strict with checking people, with full frisks and taking anything at all dangerous or illegal. Now when I go to a show, there's not even a light pat-down.

Yeah, and then when concert establishments go "overboard" in security measures we'll hear people whining about how long it's taking to get in to see a concert...

It was kind of a disaster waiting to happen.  Like I said earlier the college students that go to these shows act like complete savages.  It was only a matter of time before they stopped rioting on campus and stabbing people in the crowds and attack bandmembers.  There's a reason I don't go to concerts in Columbus.

Which obviously shows that you don't know what you're talking about. I've been to a few shows in Columbus, most of them at the Newport, and never seen any violence beyond the norm for a metal show. Take into account this is at shows featuring bands a lot more crazy than this one, with crazier people.

If you want to make a blanket statement about these shows, you might actually want to see one, although you're pretty apt at snapping a judgment from the nebula of ignorance. If you went and saw Megadeth this one time and someone pushed your girlfriend (yeah right) and you were a pussy and were scared to go back, then say that, but don't come off with "Oh this was BOUND to happen, blah blah blah," when nothing like it ever has. Sure the black metal wars were more brutal, but at least they were personal, and not some random nutbar climbing up on stage to pump a musician full of slugs. What if this were Axl Rose or Neil Diamond or something? Could've been, just as easily.

I completely know what I'm talking about. I stopped going to these shows after I saw someone get stabbed to death at a show several years ago. I see the videos of the riots the college students used to start just because it's April. This is also where there have been Ozzfest riots that got very ugly in the past.

While I'm not a metal head, I always thought he was a great guitarist. RIP Darrel, and everyone else who was shot last night

Seems like someone took Phil's statement in Metal Hammer a bit too seriously.

All joking aside, this is no good. How the fuck does someone get a gun into a show (I know, lack of metal detectors, but still...) get up on stage and KILL FIVE PEOPLE?

Rest in peace, Dime.

09 Dec 2004 Although an official statement is yet to be issued, an internet news site is reporting that ex-Pantera frontman Philip Anselmo is "devastated" by the news of his former band mate Dimebag Darell's death.

Blabbermouth.net says: "Several people that have had conversations with Dimebag's former Pantera bandmate, singer Philip Anselmo, early this morning and are reporting that the frontman is "devastated" by the news of Dimebag's death."

Blabbermouth also reports that the other members of Damageplan are alive and well, which puts pay to messageboard rumours alleging that Damageplan singer Pat Lachman was also one of the casualties.

DAMAGEPLAN - Concert Shooting Update

DAMAGEPLAN Concert Shooting Update: Gunman Blames Dimebag For Breaking Up PANTERA.

Australia’s The Age (www.theage.com.au) has issued the following report:

An enraged fan has walked onstage in a crowded US nightclub during a heavy metal concert and opened fire on the band and the audience, killing five people - including at least one band member - before being shot dead by police.

Members of DAMAGEPLAN had just begun their first song at the metal music venue Alrosa Villa when the man opened fire, initially targeting guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, a former member of PANTERA, one of the world's biggest metal bands, then his brother, drummer Vinnie Paul, another former Pantera member.

"I was up close to the stage on the side where Dimebag was playing," wrote one fan on the band's website. "Then I saw the guy jump out of the crowd onto the stage. He was yelling something about how 'You broke up Pantera, you ruined my life. What about Phil?' " - referring to Phil Anselmo, the Pantera singer who did not join Damageplan. " 'He needs heroin money.'

"Then I saw the gun and he shot DBD (Dimebag) right in the head. When DBD went down he kept shooting. Then he turned around for (other band members) Bob Zilla, then Vinnie.

"The whole time I thought it was part of the show. I had blood on me I was so close. I'm still freakin' out here...

"The cops showed up and then people started sayin' that DBD was killed...

There's some blood on my ticket stub, so I'm going to sell it on eBay or keep it or something. I know DBD is in heaven (or ripping some mad riffs in hell)."

The other dead have not been named.

Other notices on the website - which noted that objects were already for sale on eBay - were not so heartfelt. "Personally, I want a refund," wrote one. Someone else, under the name h8breedsh8, wrote: "Hate to say it, but when your lyrics and lifestyle glorify hate and death and misery endlessly, as every band that plays this club does, this type of #### is inevitable. Plenty of suicides were blamed on Black Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult back in the '70s. Only diff is that now the psychos take a bunch of people with them!"

Pantera toured Australia twice, in 1994 and in 1996. It split in 2003 and siblings Dimebag Darrell and Vinnie Paul formed Damageplan.

That's so messed up.

To KILL someone who spent half their life dedicated to playing music you obviously loved, for simply leaving Pantera and joining a different band and not bringing Phil with him...it's fucked up.

I still want more details as to how this guy was able to get ON the stage, and shoot multiple times without security getting to him before the cops.

Fuck.

Someone recently showed up on the Full Moon Productions messageboard saying that they were meant to auction off the jewelry piece that Euronymous made from Dead's skull after his suicide.

I'm kinda bothered by this since Pantera was pretty much my band for like 5 years along with Metallica before I moved out of the metal realm.

However, I don't want to read another word about how much of a brilliant and all timer he was with the guitar, because he wasn't.

"Rapper 50 cent gives a "hard look" to fellow rapper at the buffet line"

You know, this really had me laughing. What a strange thing to get out of a thread such as this.

To shoot someone because he left Pantera?!?!

This is why I hate some people. Dimebag was damn good, not the greatest but he was very talented and this is bull.

I didn't mind Damageplan, they weren't great but they weren't horribly offensive to listen too.

Killing one of the top 20, maybe top 10, of all time because he left a band that was a sinking stone is a joke. Pantera WAS great, but that time had long since passed.

Here's what i don't get. I've been to Alrosa a few times and security was usually very good. So i can't understand HOW he got in undected be it the usual enterance or the side access doors.

Who ever made the Heavy Metal concerts are violent comment is a idiot. I've been to various concerts of all genres and there is violence all the time. Country concerts break out in fights and stabbings, Rap concerts have their share just like rock and metal show.

Sadly, this was a extreme and (thankfully) rare situation.

I hope this makes ALL concert venues take a hard strong look at the security principles. Bands are likely scared now to even get on stage, esp in the Midwest area. It'll be awhile i think before Alrosa should even be holding a show. I wouldn't count out a criminal investigation on the venue and lawsuits are sure to come out if Dimebag or the other 4 victims have families. The record companies can sue as well.

That's not what matters right now, we need to mourn the lost of Dimebag and pray for the wounded and hope that this was case of a rare situation.

I blame the so called "hardcore" fans.

Never before have I encountered a more brainless group than those "fans". If you get so hardcore into a band that you are willing to KILL for them, you have issues.

And sadly, I'm sure you have a bunch of losers who are like "yeah, got what he deserved for messing with my band" or some other bull.

Don't lump that piece of shit into the Hardcore genre fans. That's like calling Beatles fans idiots because one guy shot Lennon.

Hardcore Fans are if anything the most compassionate group. The most violent fanbase has always and always will be the rap fans.

They openly wave guns in the air and countless unreported deaths occur at these shows.

Stop calling the fans idiots. The only idiots here are the piece of shit who shot those people and the security for letting this happen.

Why are we attacking genres here? it's pointless. It's been proven that deaths and insane situations can occur in a Rap, Country, Alt-Rock, Punk, Hardcore, Metal or even Jazz concert. It's the not the music but the environment of the people.

How was I being racist? In complete honesty, I've been to all sorts of Genres and none were as violent as Rap concerts.

Rap promotes violence as gratiously as hardcore if not more because they hide behind the "it's real yo" excuse. At a hardcore show they preach "If someone goes down, you pick them up" and it's a code that is largely followed.

At a rap concert the only thing you see is "Rape the bitch!" and I wish i was lying but i'm not.

call me a racist if you wish, it's proven time and time again. Not one genre save for the poppy machine music of Britney and Good Charlotte is any more violent then the other genres.

I might be wrong, but I think he meant hardcore as in "very passionately into the band" not hardcore as the genre of music.

If that's the case, then I apolgize for that comment. I thought he was lumping the fan into the Hardcore genre.

When if anything, DamagePlan was old school straight up metal music and not Hardcore.

still; the rest of what i said stands.

Bingo.

Those god damn people who call themselves "hardcore" cause of their love for a band. When the reality is by "hardcore" they mean "cult member".

I've seen it big time in Korn fans. The ones who are like "omg, I will cut my throat if they ever break up". Do us all a favor, do it now you sick freaks so we never are stuck with a repeat.

I have nothing against the Hardcore Metal Genre. It's there.

The worst fans are likely the Slipknot fans. It's been reported in some cases that the only reason the didn't split like they were rumored is because of the massive amount of suicide rumors that spread about and Corey Taylor was afraid of that happening.

Slipknot really got stuck with an insane fanbase. They are actually very quiet and intellgient guys but they are stuck with a raving pack of loons.

But I'd still rank them behind Korn fans. Not all, some of them like Slipknot fans are normal people. However, most of them are over the top nuts.

I think the ICP fans are the worst I've run into as far as the really out there hardcore fans get.

And I wasn't lumping any genre of music. It was more the horrible behavior of the people in Columbus the last decade or so.

How was I being racist?

Humor. Your post had a very linear point driven style, so the funniest response is a single word rejecting your supported points.

Personally, I've been to a lot of shows, violent and otherwise... I see no pattern.

They're not. ICP fans are pussies, but I'm sure they'd be thrilled to hear you say that.
