DIMEBAG DARRELL SHOT ONSTAGE IN COLUMBUS, OH

Recommended Posts

Guest The Shadow Behind You

ICP fans are most unintelligent of all but I think they are the least dangerous. Korn and Slipknot fans are just nuts.

It's known how Taylor is among the most intelligent in the rock industry but he's also a masterful charismatic figure and can completely control his fans with simple hand movements.

Jon Davis of Korn doesn't seem to get how dumb his fanbase is though.

I think the ICP fans are the worst I've run into as far as the really out there hardcore fans get.

Due to the many fans of ICP I've interacted with, I'd tend to disagree, though I believe it's easy for people to draw that conclusion. I think they're all very passionate, yes, but not in such a cult-like way as compared to the previously mentioned Korn and Slipknot fans.

Of course you've got the minority who're legit crazy, but for the most part I've found ICP fans to know where the music ends.

Korn fans are too big a bunch of pussies to be dangerous. They are all talk and no action. Each one of them claims they have attempted suicide about 85 times but they keep failing or "I hear Jon's voice calling me back".

Major league whack jobs but major league wimps.

ICP fans are in there with the Korn fans, all talk but complete lack of action. But less crazed.

Slipknot ones though...that bunch scares me. I hope Slipknot realizes they will be singing till they are 100 cause they might need too.

I'm still in awe at this though. I knew the cult fans existed but considering we live in a culture where Motley Crue is getting back together, I can't anyone would think a Pantera break would be permanent and worth killing for. That's just looney.

What's sad about the Slipknot deal is that if Corey Taylor felt so inclined, he could tell an crowd at a show to commit suicide on the spot and 98% of them would.

I've seen Slipknot a couple times and despite their insane gimmick and fucked up fanbase, they do put on killer live shows and are one of the most consistant bands around in terms of that.

Slipknot can never break up. Of all the bands in the world that can; this is the one that would send a ripple effect of suicides throughout the world and what's scary is this, in America we see it as pretty insane, it's even more intense and dramatic in European nations like Germany.

I don't know... I'm pretty into Slipknot (more so Stone Sour, Corey's superior band) but I wouldn't kill for them.

This fucking sucks. :(

I've been sad all day... I wasn't the biggest most insane hardcore Pantera fan, but I liked them, and this is bullshit.

I can't imagine actually being there and seeing something like that, how terrible and surreal.

RIP, Dimebag.

We'll miss you. :(

This is terrible news. Pantera was one of my favorites for their time, and Darrell was an influencial force in metal guitar riffs. What posseses someone to do something like this I will never ever understand. One report I read from the club owner said the shooter left the club and then re-entered with the gun, holding up the door man and then rushing the stage. I can't imagine the horror of those in attendance watching one of their heroes literally have their brains blown out. God speed to the families, especially of the innocent victims that got hurt in this nonsense, and hopefully this ugly incident at least leads to concert security being beefed up in the future.

:(

Paragon:

Don't quote me 100% on this, because I honestly don't know the complete story, but Darrell and Vinnie had a pretty big falling out with Phil and Rex from Pantera, so the band split into pretty much two separate bands: Damageplan and Superjoint Ritual (I won't really count Down, because that's more or a less a swamp "supergroup" with members of Pantera, Corrosion of Conformity, and Crowbar).

Mada, I can imagine you'd be taking this pretty hard, since I know you used to have Dimebag as the logo for your forum when I used to post there.

I was listening to WAAF today, for the rest of you Massholes, and Mistress Carrie LOST IT when she was talking about the time she introduced Darrell to her mother at LocoBazooka. I also heard her say that Zakk Wylde is completely fucked right now, because he and Dimebag were REALLY good friends.

The thought of Zakk Wylde crying really fucks me up.

That is just the last guy you'd ever imagine crying, like you almost think he had to have his tear ducts removed.

Damn....just damn.

4 pages of a thread about someone dying and Downhome hasn't given a soliloquy yet?

Wow.

Downhome likes to unwind with the smooth sounds of country and western. He's never heard of this genre.

It still hasn't really hit me.

I keep hearing that he's dead, but it's just not sinking in. This was a guy that I was a pretty big fan of in middle school and high school, as Pantera tapes were in my walkman about 90% of the time during class.

Have they confirmed who the second band member is yet?

Off to watch Pantera commercial videos now...

I'm shocked at the amount of people saying "how could security and the club let this happen?"

I've gone to more then a few clubs where bands are playing over the years and never get checked at the doors for weapons. The usual is check for ID, tear my ticket stub or pay for the ticket at the door. Then you walk in after you get the bracelet saying you're over 21.

Next to never do I get checked for weapons unless I go to arena's. Not even the large out door shed shows do I get checked..

And On that note... Some tributes...

Dave Mustaine

"There is nothing unique or clever to this post, and what I want to say has no doubt already been said throughout the metal community, by countless others whom were more closer to Darrell than me by now.

"However, knowing he was murdered tonight, I wish to thank and remember Darrell for his amazing life and the gift that he shared with me and so many other fortunates.

"I pray for Darrell's family and friends; specifically for their healing, their peace, and their understanding of this tragedy in this time of need.

"I send my deepest heartfelt condolences to the Abbott family, to Darrell's friends, and to the fantastic PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN fans around the world.

"We must never forget his life, and his gifts, his genius, his terrific personallity, and the legacy he left behind to remember him by.

"Darrell, I will see you in heaven and I, like so many more, love you brother.

"You will be missed."

Tim 'Ripper' Owens

"Hey, wanted to say that Dime was a great guy and amazing guitarist! He will really be missed! He made me laugh when he would see me back stage and sing out 'Ripper' in a high note with some melody he had made up! He and his brother always gave me respect. I knew how much of a fan he was of JUDAS PRIEST and Rob [Halford], so the respect meant a lot! And all the rumors about him and I working together where the best rumors I'd ever heard about me! I always wanted to work with Darrell and was always waiting for that phone call! Dimebag, we love ya bro and you will be missed!"

Tracii Guns

We have lost the last true pioneer of our metal generation.

This guy did not have formulas or bullshit.

Dime played and wrote from his soul, he also treated his friends as if they were his blood brothers.

This summer I presented him with the guitarist of the year award at metal hammer awards ceremony in London.

We got shitfaced, Laughed our asses off and had a grteat time as we always did when we hung out.

The rock world has suffered a devastating blow with the loss of Dimebag .

I wish his family and fans all the best from my heart.

Metal Forever, Tracii

Nikki Sixx

Dime,i will never forget all the times you made us laugh.Im so happy we got to spend the day together in london recently..we should all live our lives as full as you have.

i will miss you,as will all of us...This is a sad day.

Frankie Banali

"This is so wrong. Darrel was one of the nicest people in music and a great guitarist. He was always great to me each time we saw each other, as was Vinnie. Such a waste and so disturbing. My thoughts and prayers are with Darrel and my sincerest sympathy to Darrel's family, loved ones and all of his fans and the fans of PANTERA and DAMAGEPLAN. No one deserves a violent death, and certainly not Darrel. God bless him."

Ozzy Osbourne

"I'm absolutely beside myself with grief. I can't for the life of me understand why someone would do this.

"Dimebag was a dear friend of mine," Ozzy Osbourne said. "I'm absolutely beside myself with grief. I can't for the life of me understand why someone would do this. Pantera toured with me many, many times. I'll always remember the signed guitar that he gave me at my 50th birthday party. My heart goes out to Dime's family, his fans and the other innocent victims who were killed in this senseless tragedy. It's just terribly, terribly sad."

Lars Ulrich

"This is unbelievable. To sit here and talk about Darrell in the past tense seems so wrong, so unfair, so unjust, I don't even know what to say. My heart goes out to Vinnie, to their families, to the other band members, and to the families and friends of the other people that were killed or injured, in this fucking senseless act of selfishness and stupidity.

"In 1985 I was fortunate enough to meet both Darrell and his brother in Dallas on tour. The first thing me and my friend did as soon as that tour was over, was to head straight back to Dallas and hang out with Darrell and Vinnie for a long time, cuz they were the coolest mutherfuckers that we had met after criss-crossing the states for three months. That was the beginning of a friendship that was anchored in love, respect, fun, outrageousness, music, booze, sweat, late nights, early mornings, hangovers, headaches, pounding eardrums, sore bodies... the list goes on.

"There's a tendency in these fucked up moments to use the word 'I' a lot and focus on one's own feelings of pity and shock... so instead let it just be known that thru these eyes Darrell was incredibly warm, open, fun, nutty, forthcoming, talented, embracing, unpretentious, accommodating and he always had a very attractive innocence about him that obviously made him never threatening and always welcoming.

"Darrell and his brother were the cornerstone of musical adventures that were always groundbreaking, pushing boundaries, challenging to themselves and to their fans, respected by their peers and always true musicians' musicians, and today the rock world is worse off because of this untimely and senseless waste.

"Much love and respect and thanks for letting me be a small part of your life and I know you are already having fun and throwing it down with Bon Scott, Keith Moon, John Bonham, Jimi, Cliff B., and the rest of the musicians and troublemakers that you are hanging with so prematurely."

"Darrell and Pantera were one of the main reasons I joined a metal band. This is a tragic loss for the music community and to all who knew him." — Korn's Jonathan Davis

He's the type of guy that would do anything for his friends," Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian said. "He really did put his family and his friends first, and for him everyone was his family. Once you came into contact with Dimebag and became friends with that guy, it was a sacred bond. Once you shared drinks with that guy, you became a part of his extended family. ... The world hasn't seen someone with as strong an energy as Dimebag Darrell in my lifetime. He's one of those few people I've met who was absolutely special in every way."

"Dime's music was a huge influence on me personally and on Lamb of God as a whole," Mark Morto said. "As a guitar player, he was a true innovator. His sound tone and style shaped modern metal and his riffs are constantly referenced by nearly every band in metal, including my own. Only recently did I have the pleasure of hanging out with him on a personal level, and he was as genuine and down to earth as anyone you would ever meet. This is a huge loss to the music world."

"Dimebag Darrell was one of the nicest and most genuine human beings all of us in Unearth have ever met," vocalist Trevor Phipp said. "His presence, music and most of all his friendship will be dearly missed. Dime loved life, cared about people and was a true rock icon. Everything about him was admirable. Our thoughts and hearts go out to his family and friends."

SUPERJOINT RITUAL bassist Hank Williams III has posted the following message regarding the death of DAMAGEPLAN/ex-PANTERA guitarist Dimebag Darrell:

"It just ain't fuckin right... Alcohol should have killed Dime, not a fuckin piece of shit worthless fuck with a gun trying to recreate the John Lennon's killing... This happened on the same day, if you didnt know... Dime will never die EVER!!! His style of guitar playing took metal to a whole new chapter in metal history.

"For those of us that were lucky enough to be around Dime as a person... or see him jam in no matter what band it was, you know he liked to have a good time... In his honor, crank up his fuckin music and get motherfuckin wasted on whiskey!!!!!!!

"And no matter what was said with all the shit talking between SUPERJOINT RITUAL and DAMAGEPLAN, that's all it was, nothing but talk!! If we had ever been in the same room together as both bands, it would have been cool… Kinda like seeing 'ole family....

"I'm sure there will be plenty of new rumors surfacing.....And fingers pointing at people to blame... But Philip [Anselmo, ex-PANTERA] and the rest of SUPERJOINT RITUAL are in a state of shock and blown away by this tragedy! We do not take this shit lightly... What this kid did is so fucked up its not even conceivable. May you burn in the hottest corners of hell, you pistol-packin' pussyfuck...

"R.I.P Dimebag. You rocked harder than you will ever know!!!!"

My local news did a interview with friends of the shooter. Apprently, he actually did lose his mind recently and attributed it to the break up of Pantera.

Thank you, at least someone read my post.

I should also point out that I recall hearing a rumour about Vinnie Paul not being able to drum anymore due to broken wrists anymore. I guess that was false.

Not one genre save for the poppy machine music of Britney and Good Charlotte is any more violent then the other genres.

You might want to elaborate on this interesting theory

Simple. There is absolutely no correlation between violence and the genre of music one listens to. So one can argue that pop fans, being larger in number, are more prone to violence due to sheer numbers than a metal fan. That's just what my guess at his theory is, anyways...

The thought of Zakk Wylde crying really fucks me up.

I think they said he was real fucked, not crying. So I'd image Zakk is sitting his head down and a bottle of Wild Turkey or something stronger.

Precisely. It's not the genre of music being performed. It's size of a crowd and ancipation that leads to this.

The Who certaintly aren't Heavy Metal and 11 people were killed due to a large crowd irrationality. Deaths occured at Woodstock '99 and that was a wide variety of music from Limp Bizkit to Creed to Kid Rock to Sharyl Crow to Red Hot Chilli Peppers. Deaths have occured at rap concerts.

The music isn't causing violence; the crowd is causing it. It's just that Heavy Metal and Hardcore has a sterotype of being violent that causes it to get that "the fans are too violent" tag.

I found this out cause it was the headline of the Columbus Dispatch, I did a double-take, that's just fucked up, no other way to slice it.

Hearing what the suspected motive for the killing was makes me linger on this lyric-

"I'd kill myself for you

I'd kill you for myself"

I was never the biggest Pantera fan, haven't listened to them in years, but at one time I had a copy of Vulgar Display of Power- had to be the hardest stuff I'd herd at that point.

RIP Dimebad, this shit's fucked up.
