At what point did I EVER mention soloing. I didn't. I also mentioned nothing of spandex, but I'm sure it made you feel good to type it. I made a detailed post about good country music, which also mentioned nothing about solos. Apparently, I can play guitar AND listen to music that doesn't have "wanky" solos. http://forums.thesmartmarks.com/index.php?...opic=64229&st=0 It's funny that the people who cry about being close-minded, are the ones with the least open mind. Eddie Van Halen has written some great songs, but I'm sure you knew that since you are so "open-minded." There is more to guitar than soloing. Why is wanting to be an expert at your craft a bad thing? Don't you think you can write better songs if you were a technical expert? I find the people that complain about solos are the ones who also can't perform them. Jealous, perhaps? When all you can play are a few power chords and scream off-key at the top of your lungs, why would you be surprised if some people don't think it's a big deal. My Nirvana comment was not in reaction to the "Kurt Cobain Is The Best Vocalist And Guitarist And Lyricist Ever people," I was pretty clear about it. Try reading it again slower. Must have hit you pretty close to the bone to get you all riled up like that. "Anyone can realize that Nirvana isn't as great as people claim them to be." - Obviously not, since I'm taking a huge ass-ramming for bringing it up. To Incandenza: How can you write a good song if you don't know how to play your instrument? Playing all power chords is equal to the punch-stomp-kick wrestling that everyone complains about. I'm pretty sure Bob Dylan knows how to play guitar. But good thing you brought him into the mix since I never mentioned him. At least cabbageboy can make an excellent point with a logical thought, but then I'm surprised I could comprehend it since I'm so "stupid" & "close-minded". I wish this guy could see how hard I'm rolling my eyes.

Admittedly, On Avery Island isn't up to the standard of In the Aeroplane Over The Sea, but gawd, this is one band that I never can think of as average. Mangum's crazy good, and the way he gets so much out of his little acoustic guitar and nasal whine puts this above-average in a moment. I'll join the ken adams stfu train. This is almost as poor an argument as the old standard, "let's see you try to make an album before you criticize my favorite band." Shit, it might even be worse. Murmuring Beast Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 Travis are a band that I like, don't get me wrong, but stood alongside fellow Scots Franz Ferdinand, they just look weak. Frontman Fran Healy writes thoughtful and honest songs, ripping off - usually quite well - Peter Buck, the Byrds and some Brit-pop stylings. However, their singles aside, Travis are not a good album-band. They can write an average album, with a few good songs in between and so fall under the 'average' category. Thanks to the new 'harder' Scottish acts, Travis have fallen away into the distance as they are far too soft to do anything other than strum arpeggiated chords and slap a tambourine on the beat. But the dance punk genre itself is fairly average. Some good, some bad. The Rapture is leanign more towards bad than good. Plus I don't like those dfa douches.

godthedog Posted December 23, 2004 Report Posted December 23, 2004 in terms of pure musicianship, lennon/mccartney (and harrison to a lesser extent) were pretty damn average. they were just competent enough musicians to accomplish exactly what they were going for, and no more. in terms of songwriting, portishead is the first act that comes to mind. not bad by any stretch of the imagination (at least not usually), but can anybody think of a memorable line from a portishead song? i can't think of a most average overall band.

Not liking a band or thinking a band is overrated or thinking members of said band aren't great musicians does not equate with them being average. You should be able to name a band that plays a style of music that you like but isn't as unique or dynamic as your favorite bands who play that style. There is NOTHING average about Mars Volta or Radiohead unless you've got a couple of amazing prog-rock bands to recommend to me, which I hope you do

For those keeping track...that means I actually like them more now than any other time I've posted about them. There was a time when I would have written them off as below average...but every crappy band that has come after them is actually worse. That means they can be the Mendoza line for music

All for nothing Did you really want from "Mysterons" is the best I can do off the top of my head. Then there a few really typical ones like "Nobody loves me, it's true/Not like you do." I think I'm going to listen to my Portishead albums tonight.

After Downward Spiral, Trent has become this industrial/goth idol people love, and almost all of his work gets praised...but its..eh.
