It's really an altruistic gesture to the third world so that a crisis like this can be averted. Seriously though, after things get cleaned up, there's going to be a LOT of problems with disease, considering that some of the places hit didn't exactly have exquisite water supplies to begin with, and now they're full of bodies and debris. What country's medicines and people do you think will be over there? I'd argue that's more important than boards and nails or what have you. Look at how the money's being used. To look at it as plain dollar figures would be foolish.

They were reporting this like a sign of the end saying that where the tsunami hit in Sri Lanka, there was a hotel called Vision of Paradise and in 3 minutes it became hell. The US is already up to 350 million, the World Bank has put up 250 million, and others are starting to ramp up their relief aid. It's well past the billion dollar mark.

I've grown so used to tv networks exploiting every bad thing they can for a quick buck that it is almost a done deal that one of the networks will be tasteless and make a film. The question isn't if so much as when they will do it. Which is another truly sick thing about this. My prayers go out to everyone involved and to those who lost loved ones. The death toll has just climbed well over 120,000. It could take years to get the area back in order enough for people to live there. This is a tragedy of epic porportions.

If they make sure that the resources are wisely spent and that their impact is overwhelmingly positive, then terror cells in SE Asia may dwindle, as public perception of America might change, leading to people not joining those cells

At the time of posting, it was a valid point that one of the largest countries in the world had donated so little - of course that amount has now been increased so the point is now invalid. Don't want to look crazy around people saying facts about Iraq. However, I do agree it is poor taste to tie a war with mother nature. But, if you have a problem with what he says, dispute the facts and not second grade insults.

I really think they were going to try to get away with giving just the $15 million the initially offered until people (rightly) pointed out how callous that was considering how much coin we shell out to blow shit up. Whatever it took, I'm glad we're finally stepping up. What would really be cool is if we did what Canada is doing and have the government match donations people make. Besides, I don't think it's "hating America" or "America bashing" to point out that since all you hear about is how we're the bestest country in the world, when shit like this happens we should take the lead in the recovery effort instead of waiting until we get called out by some number-cruncher from the UN.
