The worst part of emo is that it doesn't even represent a style. It's a catch-all term for crappy, whiny music.

OMGZ THAT'S NOT TRUE EMO WAS STARTED IN WASHINGTON DC SCENE BY IAN MACKAYE FROM EMBRACE THEY WERE TEH FRIST EMO BANDS STUPID

But they never really fit the current emo sound let ever called themselves emo.

I'm big on the "emo" bands I like, and a lot of what I listen to could be considered as such. I listen to a bit of everything however, and dislike trying to justify what I listen to to faceless people online, which is why I stay out of this folder for the most part.

I do believe that more people could get into bands if they weren't so worried about what it might be classified as. However, some of the "emo" bands I'm listening to quite a bit right now are:

Taking Back Sunday

Saosin

My Chemical Romance (it's nearly ALL much, much better than I'm Not Okay.)

Emery

Hawthorne Heights

Thrice

Thursday

Underoath

The one thing I can't understand is that the bands that Broken Wings just listed are all considered emo, but someone else will say bands that sound like Ozma and Weezer are as well. And they have two completely different sounds.

I hate living in my area, all it is are people listening to shitty emo bands, even Canadian emo bands like Billy Talent, and the lesser, more local group here Alexisonfire, and "The Scene" that Alexisonfire left.

Goddamn you, don't lump Billy Talent in with the Emo crowd. I outta beat you.

then what do you want me to call Billy Talent then?

It's a hybrid of rock and punk pop.

This is the same type of shit that happened with nu-metal. When the label was first introduced, only bands that combined metal and rap were called nu-metal. By the time nu-metal "died," every single "pussy" metal band that came out on a major label was classified nu-metal, with the term being thrown around so ridiculously that groups like Three Days Grace were called nu-metal.

Now it seems like every band that becomes popular, but not huge (ie, Simple Plan), that sings songs about love or heartbreak, is getting the emo term attached to them.

any 12 year old would know that Simple Plan is not emo, just pop-punk at its worst.

I'd say Billy Talent is emo, and it is. Sorry every genre has its rotten apples, and usually whatever is popular at the time, will have more of them.

The River Below and Try Honesty are the only songs I don't mind of them, but jeez, I haven't heard a singer so off tune live since me at a karaoke bar.

agreed. the music is generally bad but river below is magnificent.

Underoath-Changing of the Times was a very excellent stand out album. It certaintly wasn't emo in any shape or form as they were still mostly a metal/hardcore hybrid at this point. Their last cd with the generic new vocalist is rather bland and weak so I can understand people coming to the conclusion that they suck based off that.

Avenaged Sevenfold are alright. I've heard far worse vocalists, however the lyrics are indeed cringe worthy.

As far as emo goes, I like Sunny Day Real Estate and Mineral had a few good moments. They really don't have much in common with the other bands being listed as emo on this folder but you know.

I am willing to accept that I will like any genre of music if it's done well. emo is the only genre I've really heard much of that I've despised entirely. At The Drive-In released a good album, but some wouldn't consider them emo. I think that's the closest thing I can tolerate.

And, technically, Rites of Spring existed before Embrace, and are considered the first Emo band. Them or Dag Nasty. It was rich kids from DC, regardless.

Having said that, Embrace is the only 'emo' band mentioned in this thread that I've even heard of, let alone actually heard. (not that really I consider them emo, but I digress). Give me Embrace, Rites of Spring, Dag Nasty, etc. over any of these new bands, 7 days a week.

After a brief period of confusion, I've realised that the Embrace mentioned here isn't the same as the Embrace who had a number one album in the UK last year with their trademark brand of catchy somophore indie.

The only bands here I've heard that I actually consider emo are Embrace, Mineral, and Sunny Day Real Estate. I got into emo around five years ago when it was still "Underground" rock. I've never considered any of the bands Jason listed as emo, I've always seen them as the Mainstream's mutation of emo, much like Papa Roach and Linkin Park are the mainstream mutation of "Rap-core/Nu-Metal". I consider bands like Pop Unknown, Appleseed Cast, Brandtson, and the like to be emo.

Can someone explain "dressing" emo to me? I'm not sure I've ever understood it, really.

Dressing "Emo" generally consists of:

Having a fringe across one eye.

Big black rimmed glasses will also be found on your run of the mill Emo character if they have poor vision, or even if they don't.

Clothes wise, they will usually be found in a band t-shirt that is several sizes too small. Jeans are not uncommon, they will usually be held up (and I use the term looslely) by a studded belt. The belt will not be done up well enough and is just there to look "kewl" their trousers will usually be falling down. Normally the top of the trousers will be just bellow the ass as people obviously want to see ass while they're walking round. Trainer wise they tend to go for the classic converse hi tops.

Heres the picture nl5xsk1 posted if you don't want to have to copy and paste.

This is a good guide to how you should dress if you want to be part of the scene and Emo as fuck.

Also I direct your attention to this website for further info on how you too can look just like everyone else!

Dress Emo

This discription is more or less how 85% of anyone at my college thats "alternative" dresses. It drives me mad, not only because it looks so stupid, it makes it incredibly difficult to tell them apart if I ever need too.

Yeah, I'm kinda hoping the "look like shit" hairstyle that guys are into right now will fade away soon. I know the type now, I just never knew that there was a name for it.

I went to school with that guy. Man did I ever bug the shit out of him every day about how much emo sucked. Oh man that picture is priceless.

If me and my group of friends really want to insult each other, we just say that they're emo. It's the ultimate slap in the face.

Its like some horrible disease. One day you can be perfectly normal, but then disaster strikes and your emo as fuck.

...shit I think I'm emo.

EW, what ugly shoes that girl has. And socks too. Is dressing ugly now emo?

The shirt is fine, and if the pants are rolled down, she might have something. Although I think that type of shirt would look better with cargos or any other looser pants. With the pants rolled up, she looks like a charity case who can't afford pants that fit.

There is a drag queen around here named Charity Case. I just now got the joke. Thanks, CC.

On the contrary, friend.

I'd say the bottom half is hip and original (the shoes are kinda lame) and the top is ugly and cheap.

See those socks? I ahve a sweater of the same design and I am fucking cool.

Rolled up jeans are orginal? And sorry, but "funky" socks grow out of style after you turn 12.

At least we agree the shoes are ugly.

To show off the kick ass socks, it sure is.
