High School basketball game ends in 5-2 score

MILTON, Vt. - Hard to imagine a 3-pointer in the second quarter of a high school boy's basketball game would turn out to be the winning basket — unless it's one of only three made in the entire game.

That basket, along with an earlier field goal, was all Bellows Free Academy-Fairfax needed to beat Milton on Wednesday night. The final score: 5-2.

To the teams' credit, the score was the result of an apparently deliberate stalling strategy.

It could not immediately be determined if the score was a state or national record low, but the contest certainly attracted attention.

"We've been talking about it all morning over here," said Bob Johnson, the director of student activities for the Vermont Principals' Association, which governs high school sports.

"It had to have been one of the most boring games in the world," he said.

The scoring was kept way down on purpose, a strategy made possible by the fact that Vermont high schools don't use a shot clock. No player went to the free-throw line as Milton committed five fouls and BFA had one.

BFA took a 5-0 lead and neither team scored in the second half.

"It was the ultimate deliberate stalemate," Milton coach Jim Smith said. "They didn't come out after us and we didn't go in against them."

Smith said the slowdown was implemented because BFA (7-4) has a strong scoring presence, while Milton (2-8) does not. The Milton players believed their best chance to be competitive was to just hold onto the ball.

The strategy almost worked.

"We had a shot go off the rim that would have tied it," Smith said. "We were one possession away to tie the game. We have not been in that position for quite some time."

Alex Weber's basket gave BFA a 2-0 lead in the first quarter. Shadoe Adams' 3-pointer made it 5-0 at the start of the second quarter. Brian Phelps scored later in the period and Milton trailed 5-2 at halftime.

"I've never had a player hit a game-winner in the second quarter before," BFA-Fairfax coach Glen Button Jr. said.

Even in the loss, the guys from Milton have something to be proud about. They held a strong scoring presence team to just 5 points. Don't know about you, but considering the team is 2-8, that probably was the highlight of their entire year.

Thats the most pussy ass disgusting thing I have ever heard of. That is just plain sad. if you are 2-8, just play the game and let the cards fall where they may. I mean shit, when I was in high school we were down 40 to 6 at the end of one half and we could still have more pride than that shit.

If they didn't have a shot clock in the NCAA, that would be every Cougar game until Dick Bennett got fired.

Seriously, I think they get suspended from the team for two games or something if they shoot before the shot clock hits 15.

We didn't use a shot clock either, and the one game I attended at my school back in the day had our team pass the ball around for the first 4+ minutes of the game. Was kinda lame, actually.

And I would have LOVED to see the crappy team hit a 3-pointer at the end of the game, get fouled, and make the winning free throws...

Most high school basketball doesn't have a shot clock, which is why I HATE the fourth quarter of close games. The winning team will just pass the ball around for two minutes until the other team gets bored and fouls them.

High school needs a shot clock, period.

I can't believe high school basketball doesn't have a shot clock. The rules invite a blatent misuse to suit ones advantage, and it happened here. It doesn't have to be a short period of time, but there has to be something there to tell the teams, "quit fucking around and play basketball.[/i]

Wow I've already heard of this TOTAL BULLSHIT happening, but never saw it myself. Our school if I recall had a shot clock some nights and not some other nights (if my memory serves me correctly one of our shot clocks was usually broken, but if both worked they'd use them). Although in one of the no-shot-clock games the score was 110-30 for the opposing team. And this was a home game for are girls varsity team. GO INDIANS!! Oh wait we'd axe that already at that point, GO NO MASCOTS!

Anyway back on topic I seriously hope these schools start using a shot clock, 5-2 should not happen. (I'm sure there's no action to be taken against the coaches, but for some reason when our school lost 110-30 the opposing teams coach was warned if he ran up the score like that again he'd be fired, maybe the 5-2 coaches should get a similar warning about playing Dean Smith ball. )

I went to cover a High School game and they had a shot clock in the gym. When I asked, "do you use it?"

I was told, "Nah, that's just for alumni games. Not the actual high school games."

Yep, that makes PERFECT sense.

Oh and I got the joy of watching a team pass it around their backcourt for TWO MINUTES. This isn't basketball, it's just pathetic.

That's nothing. In my junior high during my 9th grade year, our girls lost a basketball game 0-70. Yes, you read that right.

Did the team suck that bad? How the heck does a team lose 70-0?! They must've been 0 for 53 in FGA.

Did the team suck that bad?

Yes. If I remember correctly, they won one game in the whole season. Our boys did not win a single game.

Back in 8th Grade we beat a team 87-12. We were up like 60-8 at halftime it was great because I wasn't even really on the team I was the manager and only suited up when needed which was never, and even I got some playing time.

In case you guys were wondering, the record low score for the NBA was the Fort Wayne Pistons defeating the Minneapolis Lakers 19-18 back in 1950. And yes, the show clock wasn't implemented yet.
