haws bah gawd Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 You know you listened to an album at some point and thought, this song would be huge if it got a little radio play. I like a lot of mainstream bands, and I'm not too big on underground stuff, so I'm sure my opinions will differ from others. I'll list a few of my choices: Korn - Hollow Life: This came off their Untouchables album. It's a very dark song, that has a classic Korn sound to it. I just wish this had been released as a follow-up to Thoughless, instead of Alone I break. Seether - Needles: This was on Disclaimer and Disclaimer II. This was by far my favorite song from the album, and I think it should've gotten some mainstream play. It had a great chorus, and a pretty good bass line. Disturbed - Rise: From the Believe album. Very fast song, sounds like it could get a crowd going fairly efficiently. Alterbridge - Broken Wings: I hear this was a single, but it never got any play in these parts. My favorite track on their debut album. A lot of people didn't give the band much of a chance based off the fact that 3 of the 4 guys used to be in Creed.
cabbageboy Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 I always thought the Offspring really dropped the ball when it came to singles. Admittedly stuff like Bad Habit and Smash had too much cussing to get a lot of airplay, but why not release Genocide off of Smash instead of the lesser Gotta Get Away? And when Ixnay on the Hombre came out they had All I Want--a song that is hardly even 2 mins.--as the 1st single. It basically killed the album's momentum out of the gate, though they did release some good singles off it later. And also Spare Me the Details should have been a single off of Splinter instead of Can't Get My Head Around You. One song that WAS a single but didn't quite get as huge as it should have was Oasis' Don't Look Back in Anger. I always loved that song, but it didn't become that mega hit that I thought it might. Is it because Noel Gallagher sang on it instead of Liam?
Red Baron Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 Midlife Crisis by Faith No More. Its fuckin catchy as hell, the drum beat, Patton's vocals, its really radio friendly.
Myxamatosis Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 I don't know why Caring is Creepy, New Slang or Kissing the Lipless didn't hit it big for The Shins.
Epic Reine Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 And also Spare Me the Details should have been a single off of Splinter instead of Can't Get My Head Around You. "Never Gonna Find Me" should have been a single off it too. I also think Offspring picked terrible singles for their "Conspiracy Of One" album, Special Delivery and Living In Chaos should have been the two singles following "Original Prankster", not "Want You Bad" and "Million Miles Away". I always wondered hy "Can I Play With Madness" was never a Iron Maiden single, song was catchy as hell. Same goes for "Flash Of The Blade" off of Powerslave.
Styles Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 I really thought if Megadeth released "Promises" from The World Needs A Hero they could have had a real mainstream crossover hit (morseso then anything on Risk which was the specific purpose of that album) but after Risk bombed so badly Dave stayed away from releasing any soft songs, and in fact promoted the latest album on it being a heavy throwback. That's fine with me, but I think "Promises" was the type of ballad that could have gotten serious mainstream rock air play.
Styles Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 I always wondered hy "Can I Play With Madness" was never a Iron Maiden single, song was catchy as hell. Actually, it was. Was very popular too. Video is silly too. http://www.maidenfans.com/imc/?url=single1...ng&link=singles
Art Sandusky Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 "Don't Look Back in Anger" is my favorite song off that Oasis album, whereas a lot of the others are based on my mood.
PLAGIARISM! Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 Don't look back in anger was number 1 in the UK and is classified as their defining moment, it was huge.
Slickster Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 I really thought if Megadeth released "Promises" from The World Needs A Hero they could have had a real mainstream crossover hit (morseso then anything on Risk which was the specific purpose of that album) but after Risk bombed so badly Dave stayed away from releasing any soft songs, and in fact promoted the latest album on it being a heavy throwback. That's fine with me, but I think "Promises" was the type of ballad that could have gotten serious mainstream rock air play. I think "I'll Be There" from their Risk album could have been HUGE. Also, "Broken Wings" is Alter Bridge's current single (with video).
Ripper Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 Most of A Perfect Circles singles shoulda been huge if they had gotten the play. Beanie Sigels "Feel it in the Air" should be getting played out the ass, because that song is HAWT.
Carnival Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 Oasis will always get shit on in the U.S. I've heard they are godlike in the U.K. though.
Slayer Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 "Champagne Supernova" is enough for me to shit on Oasis until the end of time
Black Lushus Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 Korn - Hollow Life: This came off their Untouchables album. It's a very dark song, that has a classic Korn sound to it. I agree on the Korn song...one of my favorite tracks on that album... not so much on that Alter Bridge song...I actually prefer "Burn It Down" and "The Last Of My Life" over that one... and I can't believe I actually agree with Rip on something, but APC rocks...
The Czech Republic Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 "Champagne Supernova" is enough for me to shit on Oasis until the end of time I like "Wonderwall" EDIT: The Gallaghers are still idiots, though.
PLAGIARISM! Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 Oasis are near unlistenable a lot of the time, I should point out, but if I hear the intro the 'Cigarettes and Alcohol' when inebriated I shall dance.
Skywarp! Posted May 3, 2005 Report Posted May 3, 2005 311. They either release the most simplistic songs from their albums that won't stand out, or complicated, moody ones that are just poor choices for radio singles. From "Evolver", they should have released "Don't Dwell". Sometimes they make poor choices about what they actually CUT from their albums. Their B-side catalog contains some great jazzy instrumentals, plus "Gap", a disco-robot-voice song that would be an instant club SMASH.
Lord of The Curry Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 I don't know why Caring is Creepy, New Slang or Kissing the Lipless didn't hit it big for The Shins. Thanks to the movie Garden State the first two now have.
cabbageboy Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Yeah I know every Oasis song is #1 or whatever in the UK, but in the US Don't Look Back in Anger didn't get much beyond token airplay. Maybe a bit of MTV play too (possibly cracked the top 20 countdown but not a smash). In the US both Wonderwall and Champagne Supernova got infinitely more play. Special Delivery actually was a brief single off Conspiracy of One. I know I heard it a few times on the radio when I visited L.A. Either way Want You Bad was a better single type song, and I think Come Out Swinging was killer too. Offspring have always been bad at releasing the proper singles and maximizing the album's potential success. I wonder if it's intentional? A Perfect Circle get all sorts of airplay on rock radio, but Maynard has always been an acquired taste to the general public.
Art Sandusky Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Ryan Adams' impassioned defense of Oasis tells me all I need to know and supports stuff I already knew. (listens to "Don't Go Away")
Ripper Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 A Perfect Circle get all sorts of airplay on rock radio, but Maynard has always been an acquired taste to the general public. Man, they dont' even get attention on rock radio in Atlanta. The only attention they ever got down here was the video with the Bikini Bandits.

Man, they dont' even get attention on rock radio in Atlanta. The only attention they ever got down here was the video with the Bikini Bandits. And they still sell records, go figure. Same goes with Tool. However, a band that good doesn't need the mainstream exposure all the time, unlike many rock acts these days. "Kick The Chair" by Megadeth could have been a fairly rad single for The System Has Failed , if not leaked on the internet, but even so I think it would have sold records. Dave Mustaine has so much musical talent but is not the greatest businessman, IMO.

I didn't know that Oasis existed after '97
Styles Posted May 4, 2005 Report Posted May 4, 2005 Dave Mustaine has so much musical talent but is not the greatest businessman, IMO. Yeah, he needs to work on his "people skills". He probably has more talent then Metallica but they know how to be media friendly while Dave always comes off as a bitter malcontent...
Jingus Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 And they still sell records, go figure. Same goes with Tool. However, a band that good doesn't need the mainstream exposure all the time, unlike many rock acts these days. It's mostly because God blessed Maynard with one of the more beautiful singing voices of any male rocker. And his talent too. One of my ex-GFs, the crazy one, is possibly the most brilliant musician I have ever known in terms of musical theory. And her favorite band is Tool. That right there gets them my respect.
cabbageboy Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 With the Oasis thing, I was speaking of 1996 or so....I too haven't heard much from them post 97. I dunno about ATL. but here in Louisville Tool and A Perfect Circle have always been played a lot on rock stations. When I was a freshman in HS Tool was kind of a scary band, what with the weird videos, creepy pics inside the CD, and dark songs. I mean who wasn't just a bit weirded out by Prison Sex back in the day?

He probably has more talent then Metallica but they know how to be media friendly while Dave always comes off as a bitter malcontent... saw them about 5 years ago and he flipped us off and called us all assholes for no apparent reason...
PLAGIARISM! Posted May 5, 2005 Report Posted May 5, 2005 hmm. Underground punk behaviour doesn't really work for relatively mainstream thrash, I guess.
DCMaximo Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 I maintain to this day that if 3 Colours Red had followed up "Beautiful Day" with "Pirrouette" instead of "This Is My Time" (which got to #36), then it would have gone top 10 for sure. They should also have released "Fit Boy And Faint Girl" as the third single from their debut, instead of "Pure", which they'd given away free with Melody Maker the previous summer. Oh, and the Manics should have released "Enola/Alone" instead of "Australia" too
RHR Posted May 6, 2005 Report Posted May 6, 2005 Although not really "dropping the ball"...since they don't really promote singles with huge airplay, label help, or videos...Pearl Jam has had some really great songs that never lift off just right...a sample of non-singles, and, remember, no videos for any of these... Black Betterman Corduroy Nothingman Off He Goes(import only) Light Years I Am Mine Man of the Hour etc etc etc Sure, they have had some radio "hits"...but...I think due to the non-promotional stance they take...there is confusion over how great of a band they are...
