Axl Rose Breaks His Silence

Gn'R mastermind talks "Democracy" at L.A. party

"People will hear music this year," says Axl Rose, puffing on a cigar in the early hours of Saturday morning at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery.

 

The notoriously reclusive rocker is of course referring to Guns n' Roses' decade-in-the-making Chinese Democracy, arguably the most anticipated album in rock & roll history. "It's a very complex record," says Rose, a surprise guest at Korn's tour announcement bash. (Others in the house: Jessica Alba, cast members of The OC, and members of Linkin Park, Good Charlotte and the Used.) "I'm trying to do something different. Some of the arrangements are kind of like Queen. Some people are going to say, 'It doesn't sound like Axl Rose, it doesn't sound like Guns n' Roses.'" He then smiles and adds, "But you'll like at least a few songs on there."

 

Dressed in a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey, cross hanging around his neck, cornrows still intact and sporting a blonde goatee, Rose strolled into the party around 1 a.m., just as the DJ was coincidentally rocking some vintage Gn'R. Approached by a steady stream of women and hard-rock disciples -- including Puddle of Mudd's Wes Scantlin and Papa Roach's Dave Buckner -- Rose is cordial and chatty as he poses for photo after photo. He seems more like an average guy out for a night with friends than the most mythical rock star on the planet in 2006.

 

And he maintains that that's exactly what he is. "The only time people ever write about me is when I go out to a strip club, because I don't chase the paparazzi down," he says. And, when he's out of the spotlight, Rose says you'll find him doing average-guy stuff: reading books and watching movies. His favorite book is Philip K. Dick's A Scanner Darkly. "I was a little scared when I saw they were making it into a movie starring Keanu [Reeves]," he says. "But I guess if he can handle The Matrix, he can do this."

 

While Rose and his revolving cast of Gn'R bandmates have been working on Chinese Democracy, Papa Roach have achieved platinum status in their own right. But tonight, their drummer reverts to his teenage fan days, asking Rose for a picture and to guest on Papa Roach's next album. Rose strikes a pose and then graciously refers the fellow rocker to his management.

 

After all, before he lends his talents to others' projects, Rose has one of his own to finish, and he says it's getting there. "We're working on thirty-two songs, and twenty-six are nearly done," he says. Of those, thirteen are slated for the final album. Among Rose's favorites are "Better," "There Was a Time" and "The Blues."

 

As for a reunion with his former Gn'R mates, that seems unlikely. "I haven't spoken to Slash in ten years," Rose says. "I love the guy, I always wanted everyone to know how great he was, but.... I was just talking to Izzy the other day though."

 

However, he hints that you could see the current incarnation of Gn'R back out on the road soon. "Every time there's a big festival announced, we get rumored to be on there," he says. "But we'll see what happens."

 

One thing's for sure: Everyone will be watching.

Well it was kind of interesting. Says he talked to Izzy recently which could be good news, at least good to hear that he's letting the past be the past and maybe not holding grudges as much anymore. Almost leaving a door open to a possible reunion some time in the future, but I won't hold my breath.

 

The "people will hear music this year" isn't really all that revealing though, and still leaves the album's release in doubt. Maybe just another song on a movie soundtrack, I think the rumor was maybe DaVinci Code.

 

I guess having a full set of other songs that won't be on the album is good as well, no 15+ year waits next time.

Axl, you puffy little lair you. The only conclusion I can come to at this point why the album isn't out must be because the material isn't any good.

 

This has to go down as the most expensive album to produce ever. I can only imagine how much will be lost when/IF it's all said and done.

Axl, it doesn't matter when the new Guns and Roses album comes out, it will disappoint all of your fans. If any musician on Earth has delusions, it's Axl Rose.

 

Also, the article sucks. However, seeing that it was written by Rolling Stone, I'm not suprised, as they've sucked for years. Hell, if you look at an issue today, they are nothing but a parody of what they used to be.

Human Clay is considered a joke and their first cd was somewhat decent...Appetite is widely regarded as one of the 5 or 10 best rock records of all time, and one of the best debuts by any band ever.

 

UYIs were among the most hotly anticipated releases in popular music ( and despite being a bit overdone it lived up to its hype)...Weathered is for people who prefer their 'music' on a spoon and down their throats.

 

Axl Rose has a mystique, not necessarilly always good (riots ensued, domestiv violence, etc) but hes as close to a Jim Morrison as theres been in 30 years. Scott Stapp gets retardly drunk at televised poker games. Axl would jump into a crowd to pound on some idiot with a camera...Stapp got his ass kicked by 311.

 

One band was a shlocky cheesy lame radio invention...the other was a bunch of kids that climbed out of The Jungle and made the entire planet listen.

UYI 1/2 were definitely one of the most anticipated album's ever. If you combine the great songs from both of those albums into one album, you probably have the greatest rock record of all-time, but as it is they are just two very good records, because there is too much filler on both.

 

As far as the new songs go, there's some good ones (The Blues, IRS, Madagscar), some decent ones (Chinese Democracy) and some downright pieces of shit (Oh My God, Rhiad and the Bedouns).

 

This Gilby Clarke quote I read a while ago really best sums up the new music..

 

Axl is trying to go into a direction of like, old Guns N Roses, mixed with Nine Inch Nails, mixed with the fuckin New York Philharmonic, mixed with Elton John. He's just really conflicted, one minute he wants to do some huge ass 10 minute epic song and the next he wants to do 'It's So Easy'.
