Favorite Moments in Sports

I'll elaborate more later in the thread, but which ones did you love or hate the most? Can be anything, from plays that win a championship, to moments that made you disgusted to be a fan of your team.

Example: 2004 Western Conference Semifinals, Game 5, 0.4. Everyone knows the story. Also, Game 6 in the first round of the Western Conference Quarterfinals when the LA Kings eliminated the supposedly great Detroit Red Wings in overtime.

The Pacers getting to the finals in 2000. The only time Indiana has witnessed a pro team even making it to a championship game/series in my lifetime.

THE GOOD

Scott Norwood. Thanks to him, I got to see my Giants beat the supposedly unbeatable Bills 20-19.

Bill Buckner. Thanks to him, I got to see my Mets win the only World Series of my lifetime thus far.

The 2004 Red Sox coming back from 0-3 down to vanquish the Evil Empire.

MATTEAU! MATTEAU! MATTEAU!

Messier orgasming as he hoisted the Stanley Cup in 1994.

THE BAD

Charles Fucking Smith. Thanks to his inability to make a fucking layup, the Knicks lost the Charles Smith Memorial Game and subsequently never beat the Jordan Bulls in the playoffs. I still throw up in my mouth every time someone references that game.

John Fucking Starks - 2 for 18, 0 for 11 from 3 point range. I don't know who the bigger idiot was in that game, Starks for continuing to shoot 3's or Riley for not benching his ass.

GOOD

Thomas Muster winning '95 Roland Garros, and completing one of the greatest comeback stories in sports.

BAD

Venus Williams winning '05 Wimbledon, and making a complete mockery of tennis.

Red Sox coming back to defeat the Yankees and take the series.

Seeing Ichiro set the hit record live.

McGwire (my favorite player since the 88 WS) breaking the HR record.

Seahawks finally winning a playoff game (even if it was a mediocre game)

UW wins the Rose Bowl.

Darren McCarty's Stanley Cup Finals game winning goal in 97' going right around Niinimaa. Also the ensueing celebration at the end of the game with Yzerman holding up the cup.

Barry Sanders being carried off the field after hitting 2000 yards. A little much for a celebration like that but pretty cool.

Kirk Gibson's home run in 88' off of Eckersley in WS Game One. He was a favorite from Detroit and that was an all time moment anyways.

Have to agree with you there, I love the play by play call of the home run as well.

I also like Kirby Puckett's home run in game 6 of the 91 World Series. Tie score and the call was simple yet effective "And we will see you TOMORROW NIGHT!" Classic call right there.

This is not a great one for anyone but me and 3 other Arizona Cardinals fans, but in 2003-2004 when the Cardinals scored on the last play of the game to prevent the Vikings from making the playoffs. If you ever heard the vikings announcer call the game on the radio it is a blast. If curious the link is as follows

Favorite:

The three Pats Super Bowl wins (with the first, over St Louis, being my favorite). Just seeing the team that was once the biggest laughing stock in the sport, and almost moved (twice!) reach the pinnacle was awesome. The fact that they became a model franchise thereafter was pretty sweet as well.

Ray Bourque winning the Cup with the Avalanche ... yeah, it sucked that he had to leave Boston to win it, but it was hard not to get all teary-eyed seeing his face & excitement over winning the Cup.

I don't really have a least favorite. The worst things that have happened to the teams I like happened so long ago, it's hard to really get all emotional about them.

GOOD

Walter Payton setting the all-time rushing mark. As a lifelong Bears fan you can't convince me that anyone else other than Sweetness was the greatest RB ever.

Tate-to-Holloway in the Capital One Bowl last year as Iowa beat LSU in the "Miracle on New Year's Day". ESPN's analysts seem to swing from the nuts of the SEC when it comes to football.

Edmonds' HR in game 6 of the 2004 NLCS which sparks the Cardinals to win and then win the following night to advance to the World Series.

BAD

Cardinals getting rolled in the '04 World Series. The fucking least they could have done was come to play.

1987 Regional Final in the NCAA...Iowa blows an 18-point lead to UNLV to miss going to the Final Four. Hawkeyes haven't been close since.

I've been blessed...teams I cheer for have won ten championships since I started following them. My favourite would have to be the Blue Jays' 1993 World Series win over the Phillies. Everyone just exploded when Carter hit the home run in Game 6.

Either that, or the double gold for Canada in hockey at the '02 Olympics.

Some recent ones for me:

Good:

For pure markout value Clint Ingram's INT against Oregon was probably one of my best in recent memory.

OU's 2000 national champion. When Josh Heupel took his final knee everyone was on their feet.

Vince Young running that last TD in. It was great to see USC be vanquished.

Bad:

OU losing to TCU.

McNabb's INT to Roy Williams. My heart just fell out of my body.

Vince Young running that last TD in. It was a double edged sword b/c now Texas had a national title and a more recent national title than OU.

Three of my favorite sports moments I've witnessed live:

The Mighty Ducks sweeping the Red Wings in 4 games in 2003 Playoffs (went to games 3 and 4).

Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals when Paul Kariya scored on Martin Brodeur after being KO by Scott Stevens (I was there).

On TV, Mike Vanderjagt blowing a FG in order to tie the game against the Steelers.

The Good:

Allan Houston's runner against the Heat in the first round of the 1999 NBA Playoffs, in Game 5.

Larry Johnson's 4 point play.

The Jets giving the Colts a beatdown in the 2002 Playoffs.

Aaron Boone's HR.

Scott Brosius' game winner against SD in the 1998 World Series.

Martinez and Brosius pulling the same shit on Kim in the 2001 World Series, back to back games.

The Bad:

Yankees blowing the series.

The Jets blowing the Steeler game; Doug Brien with 2 missed FGs.

The Yankees losing the 2001

Numerous Reggie Miller moments

Jets losing the Bronco AFC Championship game

Knicks blowing a 3-1 lead to Miami in the 1997 conference semi-finals.

Good:

The 9th inning of game seven of the 1992 NLCS. I have that on tape thanks to ESPN classic and still watch it regularly. That's probably still my favorite moment ever, even moreso than the Braves winning it all in 95.

The Braves winning the world series in 1995 off of Tom Glavine throwing 8 innings of one hit ball and David Justice hitting a homerun to win 1-0.

Being at the stadium to see Andruw Jones hit a walkoff homerun in the 10th inning of a game this year.

Both Jordan 3-peats.

Everygame played by the Dream Team in 92.

The Patriots losing a playoff game finally this year

Bad:

Jim Leyritz in Game 4 of the 96 world series, and that whole world series in general.

Tuck rule game.

The Braves losing to the Giants in the 02 NLDS.

The Lakers recent 3-peat.

The Yankees winning 4 series in 5 years. Really made me lose interest in the game for awhile.

Emmit Smith setting the all time rushing record.

Barry Bonds passing 700 home runs, and soon Bonds passing Ruth and Aaron.

That is in my top 10. I loved that he did it against the Devils, a team no one wanted to win.

GOOD:

4th and 26 against Green Bay.

Eagles whipping the Atlanta Vicks last January.

Sixers getting to the Finals in 2001, especially the Toronto and Milwaukee series.

Flyers winning the multiple OT playoff game in Pittsburgh in 2000.

PSU's 2005 season.

BAD:

Black Sunday in January 2003. Joe Jurevicius is still running away from Blaine Bishop.

Eagles losing the 2004 NFCCG thanks to McNabb's injury, James Thrash's lack of talent and Todd Pinkston's lack of manhood.

1993. Joe Fucking Carter.

Billy Wagner's gopher ball to Craig Biggio in September that would keep the Phils out of the playoffs.

Flyers getting swept in the 1997 Cup Finals against Detroit.

Flyers blowing a 3-1 series lead against the Devils in 2000.

The horseshit "travelling" call against Nova in the UNC game last spring.

Smarty Jones losing the Triple Crown by a nose in the Belmont.

Good:

- Yzerman eliminating the Blues in triple OT in 1996.

- Carter's home run in the 1993 World Series.

- Manning breaking Marino's HR record.

- The Raptors shocking the Knicks in 01 and being inches away from eliminating the Sixers.

- The Seantors shocking everyone by going from worst in the league to taking the #2 seeded Sabres to 7th game OT in 1997.

- Canada beatng the US in th 2002 Olympic hockey finals.

- Stockton's buzzer-beater eliminating Utah in 1997.

- McGwire breaking the HR record.

- Finley's single that beat the Yankees in 2001.

Bad:

- Friesen beating Lalime with like 2 minutes left in game 7 in the East finals in 2003.

- Vince coming inches short against Philly in 2001.

- Derek Plante. Top shelf. Over Tugnutt's shoulder. 1997.

- NJ stomping Pittsburgh and eliminating them in the East finals in Lemieux's comeback season.

- Primeau's 5 OT goal against the Pens in 00.

- Dyson coming up one yard short in the SB.

- All of the Patriot's SB wins in general.

Al Harris's pick on Matt Hasselbeck in the 2003 playoffs barely edges out Brett Favre hitting Andre Rison for a 54 yard touchdown on the Pack's second offensive play at Super Bowl XXXI, as far as good moments go.

A very close third would be Florida's last gasp against Tennessee in 2001, as the Vols came in to The Swamp 14-17 point underdogs (dependent upon where you looked) despite being ranked #4 and held 'em off to win what I will always say was the best college game I've ever seen.

As for the worst moments, The Catch II is the beginning and ending of my list. I don't think too much about when bad things happen, but that fuckin' stung.

Good:

-McGwire breaking the home run record.

-Manning breaking the TD record.

-Dyson coming up one yard short. A great finish to my favorite super bowl (and not just because the Rams won).

-Kurt Warner's performance and MVP selection in said super bowl. Easily my favorite QB.

-Edmond's home run in the 04 NLCS. That was just an awesome moment.

-Albert Pujols's home run in the 05 NLCS, which unfortunatley leads to....

Bad:

-The Cardinals defeat in the very next game. Here I was thinking that HR was going to spark the big comeback and eventual World Series win! Instead, Roy Oswalt has to ruin everyones good time and be lights out. Stupid Roy Oswalt.

-Kurt Warner released by the Rams. I GUESS I couldn't really blame them, but still a sad day for me. I just can't enjoy a Ram's game with Marc Bulger behind center. Just something about that guy I don't like.

-The Patriots Dynasty. All of it.

-Bonds breaking the HR record only a few years after McGwire. And probably setting the new all time record eventually.

Florida vs Florida State in 2003 is easily the worst for me. One of the, if not the most poorly officiated games in college history. Not to mention Chris Fucking Rix's 52 yard TD pass with :55 left.

Good:

-Joe Carter's HR

-Leafs sweeping Sens in 2001

-Joe Nieuwendyk's 2 goals against Lalime in game 7 in '04

Bad:

-Roenick's OT goal against the Leafs in the 2nd round in '04, especially since it came right after that huge hit by Tucker and a Leafs' scoring chance

-The Leafs playing like shit against Ottawa this season, it's pretty pathetic.

Tarver's "What's your excuse gonna be now" quote to Roy Jones, in the middle of the ring, then in the 2nd fight knocking him out.

Any Williams tournament win is bad for tennis, why Wimbledon '05 more than any other?

Because Venus absolutely sucked for 2 years. Watch her loss to Karatancheva at Roland Garros 2005. Club players were better than that. Then, she gets lucky for a couple matches at Wimbledon, game improves somewhat, usual losers like Davenport blow it like always, and the unthinkable happens. It proved that certain players can completely half-ass, and still win slams. It still pisses me off, because Venus really hasn't improved at all. Her groundstrokes are embarassing.

I don't hate the Williams. If they gave the effort like they did earlier this decade, then I'd enjoy them. Just don't play if the only reason you are is to keep your "celebrity" for "acting" or whatever they do.

I'd forgoten how good some of these were, especially Fourth and 26.

Check my signature for my four favourites....

Daniel Igali kissing the Canadian flag after winning gold in Sydney gets honourable mention, despite being #10 on my all time list, something about this stands out as being very memorable...even more so than Greztky to Lemeiux, Carter's homerun, the Habs 93 Cup, Jack's 86 Masters and Koivu's return game.

Bad:

The Raiders QF in 2002. For fuck's sake.

Does the lockout count as event? I was basically braced for the announcement on Sept. 15, but I didn;t expect it to last thaaaaaaaat long.
