What was the biggest crowd pop EVER?

Recommended Posts

i just remembered when HHH grabbed the belt and defeated The Rock at Summerslam 98, it was pretty cool cuz everyone in the crowd was standing still like "he's almost there...almos....YEAAAAAAH!" and erupted all at the same time like crazy.

In reference to Backlash 2000:

I agree. The whole "Austin won't be here" thing that Vince did before the match pissed me off. I thought it would kill the heat when Austin really DID show up. But, it didn't. Rock's win was one of the biggest "title change" pops I can think of.

I always hated that all of that didn't happen at WM 16, though.

I agree with the people who talked about Undertaker at Judgment Day 2000. That crowd in Louisville was nuts, and it made for good TV as you could see the clock running down.

Not loudest, but the pop for Benoit when he beat Kevin Sullivan at GAB '96 was pretty good, and got about ten times louder when Anderson comes out to stomp Sullivan.

The loudest single reaction is either either Austin's music coming on during Mankind/Rock or Luger/Windham winning the tag titles from Arn/Tully. The Austin deal is great because the crowd reacts immediately and in unison. It is almost like they were all hoping that Austin would come out, but didn't believe he actually would. The Luger/Windham win is great because the crowd almost waits and second to make their sure there is nothing fishy going on, then just explodes as they are announced as the new champions. The Luger/Windham reaction lasted longer, but the Austin one was probably more explosive.

Bobo Brazil finally defeating The Sheik and ending his seven year undefeated streak in Detroit was supposedly one of the biggest pops if not the biggest pop of all time.

I think the Austin one was so loud for two reasons:

1: When his music hit, the crowd, in the span of about half a second, realized:

--Austin was coming out.

----He was going to interfere and attack The Rock.

------Foley was going to win the belt.

2: I remember Austin had some sort of injury, and hadn't been on TV for a week or so. The reports on the net said he wasn't going to be at that taping. I'm sure some of the crowd knew that, and were overjoyed when he appeared.

Two sort of forgotten ones happened in the SAME NIGHT:

On the first RAW after Austin walked out in 2002, (where Vince "toasted" him in the ring with a beer), Eddie came out to Austin's music as a tease, and the crowd went apeshit thinking it was really Austin.

Later that night, Vince was in the ring thinking Austin had shown up, but Brisco runs down and tells him "he" isn't Austin. Vince goes, "Who the hell is the "he" you were talking about?"

Rock's (who had been gone filming Scorpion King) music hits and the crowd goes even MORE apeshit. Seriously, it ranks right up there with Austin's run in.

I miss the days when big things happened as surprises. Nowadays they promote the shit out of it to get ratings or to spike a buyrate.

Another great one is Linda McMahon announcing Foley will be in the title match at WM 2000. Foley said in his book that it was the loudest ovation of his career.

And, (also featuring Linda), the announcement by Linda that Austin would be in Rock's corner at Backlash against HHH in 2000. It was like the crowd had been waiting for months to pop for Austin, and they finally could.

Didn't a fan try to run in during it? Cause I remember Linda about the make the announcement then she stops from a few minutes and then goes on.

I wasn't part of the IWC at the time. I had no idea Austin was coming back. Your half-second theory was awesome and exact.

I throw my vote in the Austin pop during Rock/Mankind...just watched it this week in fact on the Foley DVD...talk about the perfect camera angle too...got the whole of the audience with the action in the ring...the crowd was hot the whole match too...picked up a little during Shamrock getting involved and the DX/Corporaton brawl and then boom...everybody looses their damn minds...they pop big for the pin also...just a great night that makes you miss the better times...

A couple more-

Rock blasting HHH with the chair during Catctus Jack/HHH from the curtain

Hogan pinning Yokozuna at Mania

Edge playing Matt Hardy's theme

staredown between the Earthquake and Yokozuna in the 93 Rumble(marked hard for that)

Marty Jannetty hitting the ring in the 94(I think) Rumble where HBK stops everything and the two start punching each other in the center of a filled ring

and the most obvious....Undertaker/Foley Hell in A Cell

as far as heels go...anybody hear the crowd just go "WTF" in unison and boo the fuck out of WWE during the Edge/Matt Hardy match at SummerSlam right when the bell was rung

Charlotte in early 1986 for a Crockett house show when The Rock and Roll Express came out for a match against The Midnight Express. It was so ungodly loud and sustained. It blows away just about every other nomination in this thread.

I was there. I was only 6 years old, so I don't remember much about it, but I was in every North Carolina building that the NWA was in during the 80's.

I was part of the crowd reaction. I was in the R&R Express fan club.

Maybe not the biggest but two of my favorites are when Sting won the title from Flair at GAB 90 and when Flair won the title from Vader at Starrcade 93. I love when you can actually see the entire crowd jumping out of their seats at the same time and being genuinely excited and drawn in to the moment and the ends of these two matches are perfect examples.

I but the Hart Foundation's entrance in Calgary number 1, with a close second being Hogan hulking up at WrestleMania 18, and Flair's return to WCW and reforming the Horsemen in 1998 as third.

I was at both Canadian Stampede and Wrestlemania 18, Hogan's pop was way bigger then the Hart Foundation, mostly because their was way more people in the skydome then there was in the saddledome. And the Hogan Vs. Rock match meant more.

I really am not a huge lucha fans, but I love how heated their crowds can get. Just long, sustained, totally sincere heat, not in any way the crowd amusing themselves like in ECW or ROH.

I was at the show where Austin returned during the Mankind/Rock match where Foley won his first title. My ears were ringing for days after that show it was insane.

Another insane pop was Austin's entrance and win against HBK when he first won the title at WM.

I remember that, I still have it on tape. I think that was the most pivotal match in 1998 as far as having an impact on the future. The Rock was approved by the MSG crowd as a star on that night; you could hear them popping for The People's Elbow.

But, it was a very good match to cap a very entertaining feud, and it was a resounding "YEAAAAAAAAAHHH!!!!" when HHH pulled down the belt. I don't know why it's so hard now to say something good about Trips, because I was a 10-year-old kid screaming "YEAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!" watching that match live at home. Or maybe it's because he's a big reason why wrestling is the way it is today.

I think Virgil finally breaking away from DiBiase @ the 1991 Royal Rumble deserves an honorable mention as well as Bret Hart defeating Mr. Perfect for his first IC title @ the 1991 SummerSlam. The crowd absolutley explodes when Bret rolls Perfect over in the Sharpshooter and when Earl Hebner runs over to ring the bell.

the Warrior/Savage retirement match at WM7 had a super hot crowd throughout the whole thing...not bad considering it went well over 15 mintues and had Warrior in it. Warrior's victory as well as the Savage/Eizabeth reunion got huge reactions.

He pedigreed Vince that night. Steph didn't get it until Wrestlemania.

Still was a huge pop, though. My favorite part was when the minister asked HHH to say his vows, and the crowd just exploded because they knew he was going to let Steph have it.

That whole wedding was amazing. It was so bad and over the top that I loved it.

Especially the crowd whating everything, and Vince bitching them out.

Or Triple H coming to the wedding in his entrance music.

Animal at WCW SiN 2001

I don't get it. Granted I've never seen the show, but what joke are you making here?

Eh,

They were building up a huge return for SiN, even had me fooled.

Speculations began to fly, big names were thrown up in the air..

and we got Road Warrior Animal.

B-)
