theintensifier 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2007 August 27th: It was a great weekend in ROH that ended in a major negative. Bryan Danielson challenged ROH World Champion Takeshi Morishima last Saturday in Manhattan. Morishima retained in one of the greatest matches in ROH history. Danielson paid the price for the hard-hitting contest. He suffered a small orbital fracture and there is something wrong with his retina. Danielson will see a specialist today. It was a scary scene in the locker room as Danielson's eye was rolled back in his head and he lost vision in his left eye. We will have more information as soon as we get an update. Jesus christ. These guys are killing themselves for practically nothing. Danielson needs to get into the WWE so he can get better insurance.
SamoaRowe 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2007 Injuries happen all the time in wrestling. Joey Mercury had a serious eye injury while working in the WWE. Hell, injuries occur constantly in WWE, even with the slow, generic style they have in place.

Depends, does anyone know what actually caused the problem with his eye? I have to agree though, i don't understand why Indy wrestlers do a lot of dangerous moves, I mean yes there is a certain way to protect yourself so you don't become seriously injured but some moves that are done today still look like they would cause some type of injury even when you can protect yourself. Yes, these moves can pop a crowd, but they won't really get you noticed. Actually depening on whose watching you, you may get noticed as someone who does dangerous moves. I'm refering to the Indy wrestlers that don't, like Jimmy Rave (who had major problems with RoH and them not covering his increasing medical problems). SamoaRowe 0 Report post Posted August 28, 2007 My point was that serious injuries happen all over, not just in the indy's, so why should it just be indy guys who would need to turn it down? Yes, I am well aware that Mercury's injury was in a ladder match, yet it happened in WWE. I don't see anyone starting "WWE needs to tone it down" threads. Bob is right, WWE does not provide health insurance, or any other kind of benefits, but WWE wrestlers do make good enough money to be able to get their own insurance. A stiff boot did it? Did Danielson not protect himself? Did he just take the boot face first?
Jingus 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2007 WWE provides no health insurance whatsoever. And since the workers are both 1.independent contractors and 2.professional fuckin' wrestlers, they have to pay pretty much the highest premiums in the world. One of my best friends is a former indy worker who had to retire because of a detached retina and related eye problems. For him it just happened from the grind of getting the shit beaten out of him on a nightly basis. It doesn't take some huge move or sick bump or botched spot to get hurt. That stuff happens all by itself sometimes.
Mecca 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2007 No WWE wrestlers don't have insurance but......if you get injured wrestling they pay for it. The WWE is really good about that sort of thing any surgeries and such are covered by them.

My first thought was a forearm that was too hard or a kick that was too hard. They'd have been working a NOAH style match so probably wouldn't have been holding anything back. Jingus 0 Report post Posted August 29, 2007 if you get injured wrestling they pay for it. The WWE is really good about that sort of thing any surgeries and such are covered by them. As long as it happens on their show. If you bump yourself half to death for them for ten years, get released, and then your spine snaps on your first indy shot, they sure as hell aren't paying for it. I'm sure a guy like, say, Billy Gunn has all kinds of nagging longterm injuries that came directly from working for Vince all those years.
The Flamboyance 0 Report post Posted August 30, 2007 For what it's worth, Danielson vs Morishima was one of the greatest matches in ROH history and one of the best matches I've ever seen. I hope Danielson recovers 100% no matter how long it takes for him to sit on the sidelines. From what I saw, it was more of a freak accident that could have happened to anyone in any company. Yeah, the match was pretty brutal in that Japanese kind of way but I don't recall a seriously blatant shot to the face on Danielson that would have caused the injury. mysterious_w 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2007 Aren't they signed as independent contractors so they themselves are liable for any fuckups (As in Sandman's pending ringside assualt case, or these steroid busts)? Plus it has the added benefit of the WWE not giving them any benefits. From reading the spoilers and various spectators comments, it seems to be one of the stiffest matches in ROH ever. So it's not like there is that level of sheer abuse in the ring every match (I wonder if it was booked that way to make Morishima look more menacing. I've heard numerous times that's he's the modern day Terry Gordy, but apart from the lariats and backdrop drivers nothing in his arsenal looks that nasty). tigeraid 0 Report post Posted September 1, 2007 WWE offers no health insurance and rarely helps its performers out--ROH does have health insurance, though apparently there was a dispute with Jimmy Rave over them. Either way, Danielson will be cared for properly. The ROH guys work 3-4 times a month (in ROH, at least), make decent money now that they're under contract, and have health insurance. WWE workers are guilted into using steroids and HGH to get "the look", which increases their likelihood of injury from even the smallest movement (Vince tearing both quads walking, Botchtista breaking a bunch of stuff doing a power bomb, HHH tearing his quad running across the ring)... I won't deny a lot of workers in ROH and elsewhere in the indys take some pretty big risks, but they're far more likely to pull the moves off safely because they're actually limber, agile and have great endurance. The thing with Danielson was a freak accident, not from doing a tope suicida into the crowd. And when they do, they usually have less weight on the injury too--Mark Briscoe did an SSP to the floor in front of me in Detroit and cracked his head open--he was working a month later. DESPITE that, ROH waited for him to be medically cleared, PLUS another week, before letting him wrestle again. Same went for Jimmy Jacobs, who tore up his knee in the same weekend, he's just coming back now. They're given the proper time to heal, which is also important. It's a shame now though, I won't get to see The Best Wrestler in the World in action in Detroit in 2 weeks.

Hawk 34 0 Report post Posted September 6, 2007 Yeah, have one of the better workers in the world leave because he was involved in a match in which men were suppling the stiff shots.
