Justin Timberlake had some catchy songs, so I was fine with all the praise he would get. Somewhere along the way, however, it's gone from Timberlake worship to taking Kelly Clarkson seriously because she happened to listen to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. That's when I began shutting myself off.

The song is called "Paralyzer", and yes it sounds pretty close to "Take Me Out". I'll admit to enjoying it for a short time due to it sounding different than a lot of their other stuff, but due to the local channels blowing-up the radio with it, and calling it a "new song" well into late August/ early September, I grew tired of it.

Well, you know they say "Take Me Out" ripped off "Back Off Boogaloo", although that was like 30 years later. Personally, I always thought Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" sounded kind of similar to it, and that was within months. Somebody should have sued over that.

Funny actually, I've always said that "Take Me Out" jacked "Trampled Underfoot" since that song came out. And then a little while ago some friends had a free ticket to a Finger 11 and Sum 41 concert (let it be known that I will go see ANY concert if it's free) so I went along and Finger 11 played "Paralyzer" which they segued into "Take me Out" and THEN segued that into "Trampled Underfoot" and yes, all 3 songs are the same.

Listen to any Top 40 station once a month for 30 minutes and you'll be more or less completely caught up with what's hot at the moment. "Top 40" is misleading, obviously. There's typically no more than twenty current songs in rotation.

 

Here's a helpful hint for those trying to familiarize themselves with the current Top 40 landscape: The difference between T-Pain and Akon is that T-Pain sounds like a robot.

I think that has to do with can-con legislation and Zajonc's (pronounced science with a z) mere exposure theory: if the federal government mandates that your radio stations play a fuckload of Nickelback and Brian Adams, I guess you'll grow to like it sooner or later.

Not knowing anything about current Top 40 makes me feel out of touch. I remember seeing a commercial for a NOW! That's What I Call Music a few years ago and not being familiar with any of the songs. I felt like an old person who's willfully ignorant of anything current based on the assumption that it'll be bad. I had to get back into the now.

Finger Eleven had a pretty big hit with their ballad-esque song "One Thing" a few years ago. For the wrestling fans, you will remember that song being used in Child-Murderer's "Desire" video, and it was used heavily on his DVD as well. Still can't listen to that song without thinking of him though.

Re: CanCon. Yep, all broadcasting in Canada has to have at least 1/3 Canadian content. But Brian Adams (how sad is this?) never received a goverment grant in any way during his career, says the delightful satire How To Be A Canadian...even if you already are. First off, that Gwen Stefani song is "The Sweet Escape", not "The Great Escape". Second, I can usually tolerate some of these songs if it's catchy or if it works for a certain setting. "2 Step" and "Lean Like a Cholo" have no redeeming qualities. For my money, "Hey There Delilah" is the worst.

I used to buy those NOW albums when I was first getting into pop music. I had to work my way up to just outright buying pop albums. The genre is still pretty song, currently, but it's mostly the same players it's been for a while. I haven't been too impressed with anyone new.
