The Best Sports Movie of All Time

Recommended Posts

While I was rummaging through the 2 for $10 DVD bin at Walmart yesterday, I came across the movie Hoosiers, and on the front it said something along the lines of "The best sports movie of all time." I haven't seen Hoosiers (I know I should), so you guys tell me..is it really the best sports movie ever? I believe ESPN actually rated it as their #1 sports movie on a countdown a few years back (checking now, yes they did). I wouldn't say I've seen a ton of sports movies, but I'd have to say my favorite by far is Remember the Titans (in fact, it's one of my favorite movies of any kind, ever). Rudy is another favorite, of course, and who doesn't love Angels in the Outfield? I also really liked Field of Dreams and Coach Carter..

So, opinions? What are the best sports movies of all time? I apologize if this thread has been made in the past, but I don't remember seeing it.

Victory. Excellent movie.

Throw Bull Durham in there, too.

I'll go with

1) Rudy

2) The Hustler

3) Rocky

4) Brian's Song

5) Field of Dreams

Michael Mann should be shot dead for taking what should have been the greatest sports movie ever, Ali, and putting people to sleep with it

On that note, When We Were Kings is another great choice.

Caddyshack gets an exemption because it's on another tier of movies for me. And I'd hardly call it 'the best', but Tin Cup might be my favourite sports movie.

With those two out of the way, Field of Dreams.

I really like Tin Cup. The end is very different for a sports movie and Don Johnson plays a great asshole

If anyone wants to see the whole Top 25 list made by ESPN, you can find it here: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/espn25/stor...estmoviesresult

I love Jerry Maguire, but I never really considered it to be a sports movie. Searching for Bobby Fischer is on the list too, which begs the question What defines a sport? Would anyone consider Bobby Fischer to be a sports movie but Rounders not?

No. If Searching For Bobby Fischer is a sports movie, then Rounders certainly is. Personally, I don't consider Rounders to be a sports movie, although it is one of my favourite movies ever.

It's Rudy and it's not even close. Miracle hasn't been mentioned, but that was good.

What the hell? Wikipedia tells me Rudy was ranked the 24th best sports movie of all time by ESPN. How the fuck is that even possible? What the hell was ahead of it, Mr. 3000?

EDIT: Oh, the list is two posts above me...how about that.

Still, that's retarded.

I'd go Rudy and then Hoosiers. Honorable mention for me goes to Seabiscuit and The Natural (which might've been higher but some bits are so ridiculous, ala the stuff with "Bump" Bailey that it hurts the film's standing).

Just a comment about Remember the Titans..

Whenever my friends claim that I'm a racist (I make a lot of racist comments but truly am not one), I bring up the fact, and it's true, that I tear up every single time I watch the scene where

Julius goes to the hospital to see Gary after the car accident.

Nurse: Sorry, family only.

Gary: He's my brother. Can't you see the family resemblance?

Some heavy shit, right there.

1. Rocky

2. Eight Men Out

3. Bad News Bears

4. Bull Durham

Baseball is best depicted in Bull Durham, but the romantic stuff is pretty bad. Eight Men Out is perhaps the greatest historical film I ever watched.

My favorite is Major League. I must have worn the VHS of it out when I was 12.

I think Rocky is probably the best.
