Raw was boring as hell. Silly me thought that they'd try to put on a really compelling show that would hook new or old/lax fans who tuned in for the money giveaway.

The WWE needs to remember that it's the dramatic element that most people want to see. After all, it is a television show, not a sports event. The problem is that there aren't any interesting storylines anymore. Regardless of what you say about the Attitude Era, the storylines were much more interesting and captured much more people. Feuds were actually because of some dramatic element between the wrestlers such as Austin being run down, The Ministry and the Higher Power, The Austin and Rock rivalry, The Corporation trying to screw Austin every week. There were television aspects which is exactly what this show needs.

 

Why are Cena and HHH wrestling? Because both men want the title...big fucking deal.

 

Why were Austin and The Undertaker fighting? Because Taker tried to embalm him, sacrifice Stephanie McMahon, sided with his sworn enemy Vince, on top of possibly wanting the title. The matches definitely need dramatic elements definitely need to be part of the show as well. Why not just have Vince try to screw Cena every week? It worked before and it certainly can't get any more uninteresting than it is now...

 

Just try something new...The attitude era was their most successful period ever...if it's not broken, then don't try to fix it. But this WWE is beyond broken...it needs fixing.

Hopefully this won't be taken the wrong way, but the WWE could do with another Chris Benoit legit wrestler on their cards and Danielson would be awesome for that. Plus, he's got the added extra of having a bit of charisma and being good on the mic, something Benoit always sort of lacked.

 

Chris Benoit legit wrestler? What exactly is a legit wrestler? Lesnar? Angle? Benjamin? or how about every wrestler on the roster. They're all wrestlers. If by legit you mean having amateur credentials, then why are you talking about Benoit and Danielson?

I think he means someone who just goes out there, has intensity, wrestles, wins, and goes back again, and does it better than anyone else.

Well that makes sense, try something new such as... Vince McMahon screwing over someone like he's been doing for the last 10 years. People were bored of Super Cena as well, ratings weren't crazy during 2006 or 2007. If anything they started to go down in 2006/2007, and that was during the whole Super Cena being thwarted by Vince McMahon era.

You've had McMahon try to restart an attitude era, but that's just it, he's trying to force it upon people, when it happened 10 years ago it just happened as it happened. You can't force people to have an 'attitude', it won't work and it hasn't worked. Besides, all Vince McMahon has done to try and restart an attitude era is almost a carbon copy of the last one - Same DX, same Evil Mr. McMahon character screwing over the babyface.

Everytime they've got close to building up an interesting storyline - Mr. McMahon's Son, Crazy King Regal, etc - the history of wrestling and steroids use has came back to haunt them and put the 'lead role' out of the picture. Maybe thats irony, or maybe its 'justice' catching up with WWE for the years of turning a blind eye to what goes on regarding drugs.

Actually hasn't this last year been the most financially successful?

 

I can't quite work out what specifically you are complaining about, Cena & HHH are trying to find out who is the better wrestler, that is the most basic storyline going, I'd even have the first match be HHH winning via small package or a roll-up (with or without ropes either works) giving them each a victory setting up Summerslam to be a violent end to the feud over who is TRUELY the better.

 

Also "Undead Super-powered Undertaker" comes back every now and then but really who cares its shit.

 

What we need is some change in the top of the card, I'd love them to go with a Friday Night Lights Matt Saracen storyline, where they push someone new and allow they're friends, and possibly family, come along for the ride Without turning Heel automatically E.g. have Spanky or London get a few "Fluke" wins leading to a title shot, bringing the OTHER with them.

Yep, this million dollar thing was a great idea!

 

It just seemed really boring and a waste of a show, I would have hated to be have been part of the live crowd, they didn't really get treated to much that was fun. Was like 30mins of McMahon standing next to money, talking on the phone, and some ok matches.

 

And fucking up dialing every other call. It was horrible.

 

I know one thing...I'm tired of the show being more and more kid friendly. Listening to cena at the announcer booth was just brutally painful. He sounded so motherfucking lame...like he was talking in front of a group of 8 year old kids. I was seriously wanting someone to just go up to him and bitch slap him. Then of course after the bloodless cage match a few weeks ago, we get micheals thrown through the Jeritron and he didn't even blade. Between that and the 2 minute matches, raw has been pure shit with only one or two good segments every other week. The only stuff I've been actually enjoying consistently the past few months has been the segments with jericho or micheals in them and actually the women's matches. I've been pretty aggravated about the product for a while but it was never more annoying that last night.

 

If they want to go down the kid friendly route then they should have one show be the "kid friendly" show and the other more of the PG-13 deal we saw during the Attitude era. They've got two brands, yet I can spot little difference between them.

I don't know why WWE is surpised that the give-away didn't result in more viewers. As I posted over on Scott Keith's site, the problem is that it actually doesn't encourage viewership at all. A) They have the same code throughout the night, and it's revealed at the start of the show, and B) You don't even need to be watchng RAW to know it; you can just go to wwe.com.

 

If they really wanted to ensure people were watching, they'd have a different code for each drawing (available only on TV), revealed only as the phone call is being made.

WWE house show report 6-11 Auckland, New Zealand

 

 

 

The ring announcer thanked the crowd for showing up

and then explained that since Undertaker lost an One

Night Stand and was "banished", he could not appear

tonight. As he was saying this, Shane McMahon's music

hit and he came out dancing, talked up how great it

was to be here and then said he had talked with Vickie

Guerrero (at this point he had to stop because the

crowd exploded with boos, he actually smirked and

audibly said,"Heh!") and come to an agreement that

Undertaker would be allowed to appear as part of a

"Farewell Tour". The crowd showed their appreciation,

and in return got to hear Chuck Palumbo's music.

 

US Title Match - Matt Hardy vs Chuck Palumbo

 

Matt got big cheers, and mugged to the crowd for

awhile teasing tossing his shirt and making the crowd

sections cheer for it. When he gave his shirt to the

referee and instructed him where to toss it, Palumbo

intervened and threw it to the floor, getting big boos

in reaction. Palumbo got into it with a fan in the

front row and had to be stopped by the referee several

times from attacking him. He took early control of

the match from Hardy and beat on him for awhile,

before Matt fought back and hit the Side Effect.

Palumbo kicked out and reversed the Twist of Fate, but

Hardy dodged him and managed to hit it successfully to

get the pin.

 

Victoria vs Michelle McCool with Funaki guest referee

 

Funaki came out as the guest referee but pretty much

did nothing the entire match. He did get a good round

of applause though. Victoria was hilarious arguing

with sections of the crowd and freaking out when she

would pose for them and get no reaction and then

Michelle would pose and get an ovation. I'm not a

huge fan of diva matches but this wasn't a bad one at

all and the crowd was really behind McCool. At one

point, Beth Phoenix ran down to ringside but McCool

saw her and hit a clotheline off of the apron knock

her down. Victoria tapped to a leghold submission and

angrily threw off Funaki's offered assistance to the

back, only to fall on her ass and get laughed at by

the crowd. She's a remarkable wrestler, I wish she

got a bit more credit for it.

 

VIP Lounge - MVP came out for a special International

Edition of the VIP Lounge. He made a point of telling

everyone that he didn't want to get anyone down

because he was genuinely excited by his guest for the

night, a future WWE Hall of Famer..... Bushwhacker

LUKE!

 

Out came Bushwhacker Butch.

 

MVP apologized for calling him Luke and said he was

just too excited, and then called out his next guest,

Tony Garea. Garea got a nice ovation and MVP was

being respectful to both men, then mentioned a local

sports team called The Warriors, mentioned they lost

their last game but then quickly told the booing crowd

that he didn't mean to get everyone down and started

talking up the national rugby team The All Blacks, and

mentioned how they were considered the greatest team

of all time. As the crowd was cheering, MVP looked

confused and mentioned that the All Blacks had lost

the last World Cup to France, and lost the previous

World Cup to that.... to France..... and in fact they

hadn't won a World Cup since the very first one, back

when the world was black and white and Tony Garea was

still wrestling! Then he lifted his mic and bonked

Garea on the head, knocking him out of the ring, then

turned and smacked Butch on the head and yelled at the

crowd that he wasn't going to let a couple of "scrubs"

like Butch and Garea into his VIP Lounge. Garea came

back into the ring furious, pulling off his jacket and

attacking MVP. He and Butch teamed up for the

Bushwhackers old Battering Ram Finisher and knocked

MVP out of the ring, then mugged for the crowd and did

the old Bushwhacker strut. The crowd lapped it up.

 

Kelly Kelly came back out and announced there would be

a special timekeeper for the next match, and took a

small kid called Jared out of the crowd and led him to

ringside, sitting beside him for the rest of the match

and chatting with him, telling him when to ring the

bell. It must have been like living in a dream for

that kid.

 

CM Punk vs. Chavo Guerrero

 

Punk came out wearing a Warriors (local sports team)

jersey which he made a big deal of gesturing to. Lots

of CM Punk chants, and a very small anti-Punk

sentiment that Punk acknowledged with a shrug and a

smirk. Chavo came out and seemed to take exception to

the Warriors jersey (maybe because Guerrero means

Warrior in Spanish? Or maybe because Chavo's a jerk?)

but when it came to match time, Chavo constantly

refused to start things of, getting the crowd quite

riled up in the process. Bam Neeley made a single

solitary attempt at an intervention which involved him

grabbing at Punk's head when he was on the canvas and

then quickly running away. Punk went for the GTS very

early and paid for it, but eventually it came down to

trading blows and kicks and Punk quickly got the best

of the exchange, knocking Chavo into the corner and

hitting his High Knee. Chavo took the GTS and got

pinned, and mugged to the crowd for awhile before the

intermission.

 

WWE Tag Titles - Miz/Morrison vs Finlay/Hornswoggle

 

Yes Hornswoggle got a title shot. All four wrestlers

got the crowd pumped with some hilarious insulting

gestures at each other. Morrison and Miz were

constantly doing a bizarre arms spread like wings

gesture where they would flap their hands only.

Finlay responded by making the limpwristed gesture at

them to the crowd's delight, and then Hornswoggle

minced about on the apron, causing Morrison to

physically collapse in shock at the sight. The crowd

started up a YOU SUCK DICK chant at Miz who violently

shook his head and slapped his hands over his mouth in

denial. Morrison jumped to the middle rope to offer

support to Miz, Miz turned and realized that his face

was mere inches from Morrison's crotch and staggered

back as if he'd been physically struck - later they

did a neat bit where Miz ran on knees to hug Morrison

for support, only for both to simultaneously recoil

when they realized how it looked. Once the match

actually started, Finlay took early control, and at

one point after trying on Hornswoggle's vest, went

walking into the crowd so he could stand on a seat and

yell insults at Miz. Finlay beat on Miz to the point

that he felt safe in tagging in Hornswoggle, who

shortly after found himself confronted by both Miz and

Morrison. He pulled the tennis ball gag but they

quickly began beating on him, mocking Finlay who

looked devestated and physically flinched every time

Hornswoggle was hit. A massive Hornswoggle chant

started up in support, and at one point Miz actually

stepped up onto Hornswoggle's back and stood there

posing. Hornswoggle actually got in offense at one

point, hitting a little hurricanrana and a couple of

other moves, and when Morrison and Miz both ended up

on their knees he started drilling them with lefts and

rights, then went for the tag only to be grabbed by

the feet and hauled back. He managed to slide under

Morrison's legs though and make the tag, and Finlay

came in and went crazy beating the crap out of them,

hitting the Celtic Cross. Of course as everyone had

known must happen, Miz and Morrison managed to sneak

out the win and escape with the belts, but Finlay

called on them to come back and have another go at

him. They rushed back, but Miz got sprayed by

Hornswoggle's water gun and Finlay then smacked them

both down with his shillelagh. He popped

Hornswoggle's hat on his head and the two headed

backstage to cheers, and in the ring Miz and Morrison

began arguing over who was to blame for the beating

they'd just taken. They shoved each other several

times, then raised arms to hit each other.... then

hugged and mocked the crowd for thinking they were

breaking up.

 

Shelton Benjamin vs Kofi Kingston

 

This was a literal match of two halves. Shelton

deliberately wasted time and applied headlocks to

ground Kofi, and it was effective at getting heat from

the crowd, but he did TOO good a job, causing people

to get increasingly restless and angry, starting

BORING chants and demanding for something to happen.

The second half however was excellent, with Kofi

increasing the speed of the action and both guys

hitting a series of moves and going for covers only

for the other to kickout. Shelton's T-Bone Suplex

looks great, and he countered a couple of Kofi's

attempted finishers. At one point Kofi ran for a

suicide dive when Shelton was outside, but simply

bounced back off of the ropes when he saw Shelton drop

to the canvas. Shelton hit his spinning body kick but

failed to get the three count, and Kofi hits his own

kick the get the win.

 

Mark Henry/Great Khali vs Brothers of Destruction

 

I often hear the line "television does not do this man

justice" but boy is it true for both Henry and Khali.

They're monsters, and the reaction both get when seen

live goes a long way to explaining why guys like this

are so often employed by WWE. Henry was wiping sweat

off of his brow and flinging it at people in the

crowd, which I thought was a neat touch. At this

point we had no idea who the opponents were going to

be, but the tension and excitement in the air were

pretty palpable since everyone knew who it HAD to be.

Kanes pyro went off (I was across the other side of

the arena and I felt a blast of heat!) and the crowd

went crazy, but it was nothing compared to the

reaction when the gong sounded and the lights went

off. Taker came out sans coat and hat, but nobody

cared because it was The Undertaker, and most of us

had expected that he wouldn't be there (I'd personally

bought my ticket with Taker's presence as the MAJOR

reason for going, so I'd been bitterly disappointed to

think he wouldn't come as part of the Banishment

storyline). The match was standard fare for a

BOD/Henry and Khali match, but everyone (including

myself) reacted to everything like it was the greatest

thing they'd ever seen. Taker went for Old School on

Henry early but Henry caught him in midair with a

Bearhug, which was impressive. Kane spent the most

time in the ring, and for almost a solid five minutes

was caught up in Khali's vice grip. Undertaker would

slap the turnbuckle and get the crowd stomping their

feet and cheering and Kane would raise up and start to

break the grip, only for Khali to force it back on

him. This repeated at least three (possibly four)

times but the crowd kept on getting fired back up

until Kane finally broke free. Undertaker

successfully hit Old School on Henry, and the match

broke down into a big melee with Taker grabbing Khali

for a Chokeslam and Kane joining him to pull it off,

then they did the same to Henry and Taker got the pin.

Henry and Khali staggered out and Taker made a point

of gesturing at Kane to get the crowd to applaud the

ECW Champion (and the crowd happily did) and then they

both walked to the top of the ramp and did the dual

turn, stare and arm raise.

 

It was fantastic.

 

Kozlov vs Shannon Moore

 

Poor Shannon Moore. This was mercifully quick. Moore

got in a couple of kicks but otherwise it was all

Kozlov. His offense looks brutal and gets wincing

reactions from the crowd, and the silent entrance

works surprisingly well at getting people fired up at

him.

 

World Heavyweight Championship - Batista vs Edge

 

People went batshit went Batista's music hit, people

were up on their feet and screaming with arms raised,

I was quite surprised at just how universally over he

was, I knew he was popular but not quite THAT popular.

When Edge came out, he quite pointedly ignored

Batista, taking time to insult the crowd and argue

with them. Batista noticed how Edge was reacting to

signs so hopped out of the ring and grabbed a giant

"EDGE SUCKS" sign and stood in the ring with it

raised, all while Edge was none the wiser. Edge had

stopped to grab a sign of a fan, he blew his nose on

it, rubbed it on the ass and tossed it to the ground

looking incredibly smug, then turned and stopped in

his tracks when he saw Batista holding the giant "EDGE

SUCKS" sign.

 

I wish I could have seen Heel Flair in his prime just

so I could compare it to this. Throughout the night

many of the heels had used deliberate stalling tactics

before and during the start of matches to differing

effects. But they all paled in comparison to Edge,

who drove the crowd into a frenzy for the next 5-10

minutes. After effectively neutering the small but

vocal Pro-Edge section of the crowd by shouting

insults at them, making obscene gestures and getting

them to chant AGAINST him, he refused to hand the

title belt to the referee before staring longingly at

it, then kissing it.... then actually making out with

it! He then spent close to ten minutes refusing to

get into the ring.... and made it work beautifully.

Every time he looked like he was almost in the ring,

Batista would make some slight movement and Edge would

jump back out. Finally Batista actually turned his

back and climbed out of the ring, at which point Edge

entered. Batista then slid back into the ring and

Edge immediately jumped out. At one point, Edge was

actually all the way in except for one foot still

outside the ropes. He stood there teasing the by now

rabid crowd, bringing the leg partly in then pushing

it back out. Finally the match started, but Edge

continued to jump out of the ring, only coming back in

when he was in danger of being counted out, then

leaping back outside. Finally Batista had enough and

chased him, grabbing him and tossing him into the

barriers and onto the ring apron, much to the crowd's

delight.

 

The match went back and forth, Edge got in offense as

well as Batista, usually started off by capitalizing

on a Batista mistake or tossing him into ringposts

etc. His inability to put Batista away got to him and

he left the ring to grab the World Heavyweight

Championship, meaning to hit Batista with it. The Ref

grabbed it off of him and Batista hit the Batista

Bomb, but then Bam Neeley and Chavo ran down to the

ring to attack him. Batista fought them both off, but

while fighting Bam, Chavo snuck Edge the WHC. Batista

lifted Edge up for another Batista Bomb and got

clocked in the head by the WHC, and Edge pinned him

for the win. The crowd was booing and screaming as

Bam, Chavo and Edge put the beatdown on Batista, and

then the gong sounded and Undertaker strode down to

ringside. Edge was freaking out and demanding Chavo

and Bam attack Taker. They looked at him, looked at

Taker, then at each other, then both jumped out of

opposite sides of the ring and left Edge alone with

Taker. The crowd was loving it, and a terrified Edge

turned and saw Batista staggering to his feet and

quickly stepped up and offered him a handshake to show

Undertaker he was actually a good guy. Batista stared

at Edge's hand, then smiled and gave him a thumbs up

and a relieved Edge looked over at Taker to see if he

was buying it. Batista then gave Edge the thumbs

down, and then Taker did the cutthroat gesture, and

they both hammered on him before Taker hit the

Tombstone Piledriver.

 

Bam and Chavo collected Edge and helped him up the

ramp and backstage and, Undertaker took a moment to

look around at the crowd as they gave him an ovation.

It was a really neat moment, the "banished" wrestler

coming back "one last time" and getting to soak in the

fan's support. He left the ring and Batista then

ended the show by making a point of going around

ringside, up the ramp and up both accessible sides of

the stands to slap hands with fans and thank them for

coming to the show.

 

It was an excellent show, very enjoyable, and

personally speaking not one of the matches were a dud,

with the exception of the first half of the

Shelton/Kofi match which became a very enjoyable match

by the end. It's a shame it's not financially viable

to come here more often, but it does make the times

they do come feel special. They'll definitely have a

repeat customer next time they're back in this neck of

the woods.

If they really wanted to ensure people were watching, they'd have a different code for each drawing (available only on TV), revealed only as the phone call is being made.

 

That wouldn't be a good idea at all. The code is on the website for a reason. People who don't get to see Raw live- like people in California who have regular cable, and not DirecTV like I do- would get fucked over.
