My dad hates music.

Found out last night that Green Jelly still tours. They're in Boston on 7/8, which is a Tuesday, and they might be joined on their tour by DBX, which would prove amazing.

No SotU this year due to the economy and, apparently, the sour taste left in people's mouths after the Necro fiasco for the first half of last year's tour. Well, that's what you get when you hire a rap artist with no backing band to play a metal and hardcore show.

I go to shows with my dad on a semi-regular basis. Of course, we both like fogey rock so it's a natural fit.

Yeah, but you're a grown ass man.

My dad has good taste in music, or at least he used to, but he doesn't listen to music anymore, because of his religious beliefs. (not that they forbid him from music, just the kind of music he likes, ie. Sabbath et all)

My 14 year old is dragging me to the Vans Warped Tour. I may go see Journey. I hear the new lead singer is Filipino so that should be a an experience.

I'm going to that too. I'm expecting to be one of the oldest non-parents there.

My dad is the same way. He used to listen to a lot of Sabbath, Zep, and other more rocking things. In the last 5 years or so he's started listening to really shitty country music and indie folk.

I realized how odd that was after I posted it. Yeah I'm kind of a geek. But you see that kind of scenario at classic rock concerts all the time. Fathers and sons reunited for the majestical rock power of Foreigner or what have you.

What, your son? Who takes their dad with them to a show? That's fuckin' weird, man.

Keep in mind he is only 14 so to get to the concert which is an hour away, he'll need a ride. It was more of a "Hey dad, me and my 5 friends need a ride to this concert so you are going" type of request. I'll mainly be going for the beer, food, women and contact highs.

Journey's new singer isn't half bad. He even reminds me of Steve Perry more than Steve Ageri did. Guy even has the greasy Steve Perry haircut.

I don't have much to look forward to as far as concerts go until the Fall. Seeing Kamelot/Edguy in September, and Nightwish/Sonata Artica in October.

Saw the REM show in Philly Wednesday night. Pearl Jam was there. Eddie came out during the encore and sang Begin the Begin with them then Johnny Mars came out and played on Fall on Me and Man on the Moon. Really fun show. I'm going to hit up the Pearl Jam show tonight.

Modest Mouse was surprisingly bland as an opening band, but The National were very good. I kind of expected it to be the other way around.

Just got my tickets to At The Gates/Darkest Hour/Municipal Waste. I'm so fucking psyched it's incredible.

Also, I can't remember if I posted this before, but the ROCK AND SHOCK FESTIVAL has announced the concert lineups.

October 10th: Children of Bodom, Between The Buried And Me, and Obituary

October 11th: GWAR and Mushroomhead

October 12th: Insane Clown Posse

...every reply in the MySpace group post has been saying to go on the 10th and the 11th and skip the 12th. Haha.

I didn't even know ICP was still around. The 11th show should kick fucking ass. The only group from the 10th I'm remotely familiar with is Children of Bodom.

Obituary is solid. BTBAM are incredibly overrated, but Obituary is pretty damn influential to heavy music. Brought a lot of the groove to death metal. Not the first DM band to show groove, but maybe the first important one to. Personally? I don't care for 'em too much, but it'd be pretty sweet to see 'em live.

Now the 11th...fuck Mushroomhead. They've sucked for a while. And I hear that they're painfully boring live. But GWAR? Shit, I fucking love GWAR. I'm so there.

Well the Tom Petty show was memorable to say the least. It was in a venue that has the expensive seats under a roof, and the majority of the people out in the open on the lawn.

And it fucking POURED. Thunder, lightning, downpours.

I was in the dry seats...

But the coolest part is that the power blew...TWICE. Just tremendous stuff.

Enjoy $6 beers!

On the home front, nothing going on concert wise in Southern California this summer. Maybe next year.

There was a father & son parked next to me at the Iron Maiden show last Friday - the old man (who was about my age) was taking his 14 year boy to his first concert as a reward for not getting suspended from school. Unfortunately, the kid was also being forced to repeat 8th grade, so it wasn't all good news for the family.

What started off as a somewhat "that's a cool thing for a father to do" turned creepy, quickly, when the dad painted both him & his kid in permanent marker & glow-in-the-dark paint to "look like Eddie so we get on-stage". And then things went from bad to worse after the show, when the son mentioned that he was getting tired, and the father advised "I'm too fucked up to drive. Go sleep in the truck if you're going to be a pussy."

Going to see 311 with Snoop Dogg and Fiction Plane (fronted by Sting's son) in a few weeks. It's my yearly 311 excursion.

Going to see Paramore for the third time in August, they're playing with Jack's Mannequin (which is basically the new name of Something Corporate) and Phantom Planet. I've seen SC before as well and they were solid, so I expect the same from JM.
