What were some concert events you attended

This has probably been done before but I don't spend much time in the music folder so my apologies up front if this has been done to death. Here are some concert events I attended that were more than just music.

 

Kiss - Farewell Tour 2000- Their supposed farewell tour, yet 3 years later they are playing in my town again. It was awesome with all the pyro and the Kiss Army. Not a huge fan of their music but seeing them live was awesome.

 

Prince - 2000 - I'm a fan of his music but GOOD GOD the women in the audience were worth more than the price of admission.

 

Up In Smoke Tour 2001 - Dr Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem - I don't partake of the chronic but damn if the contact high wasn't the shiznit. This concert from start to finish was a fun smoke out party.

 

Digital Underground - early 90's- The Undergrounds concerts were always a party. You couldn't help but dance like a fool to the Humpty Dance. Probably the most fun I've had goofing around at a concert.

 

Public Enemy - 1988 - Being a non-black man at a PE concert with the S1W's on stage was scary yet awesome. PE back in the day were awesome.

 

NWA - 1988 - Eazy E, Ice Cube, Dr Dre and their posse put on the shows that made you wanna kill somebody, and enjoy doing it.

 

Too Short 1985 - 1993 - Being from Oakland and having local rapper come up during this time was great. There was a local radio station that would put on a mega concert with like 15 artists with the show being like 12 hours out in the hot sun. On 2 occasions, Short showed up unannounced, performed, and stole the show.

 

SummerJam - 1987-1990 - This is the concert put on by the local radio station. Each year they would try and get about 15 artists to pop in and do a quick set. Young up and coming artists like Mariah Carey, Paula Abdul, the Cover Girls, Expose, BBD would perform while they were just up and coming in the music industry. This was held at an amphitheatre and it was an awesome site when the people sitting on the grass in the general admission section, some 10,000 of them would have a 20 minute food fight.

 

Day on the Green - 1993(?) not sure of the exact year. Day on the Green was a yearly concert on the field at the Oakland Colisseum, at that time only the home of the Oakland A's. Metallica and Guns n Roses headlined but the controversy was Ice T's band Body Count performing. They of course had the song Cop Killer, which caused the security to not want to protect them. The mosh pit got out of control and people started tearing up the sod and it turned into the largest sod fight I've ever seen. The A's of course weren't happy.

 

Lollapalooza 1992 - Headlined by the Chili Peppers, with Ministry, Lush, Jesus Jones, Ice Cube and the Booyah Tribe also performing. Had a great time and with Ice T as the host of the night, it was awesome to see the show close with the Chili Peppers joined onstage by T, Cube and the Tribe.

I'm not very concert savvy as I almost never go to 'em due to my cheapness, but I saw Weird Al Yankovic at the Puyallup Fair last month and he was just amazing. *Cough* So, yeah.

ICP - Bizaar Bizzar tour - Clifton Park, NY - It won't be remembered for the music, unfortunately. I blacked out halfway through ICP's set. Some will say "lucky you," but I was very pissed. I still have no idea why it happened.

 

Dillinger Escape Plan - Monsterfest 2001 - Burlington, VT - THE most insane moment of my life. Fire breathing, naked dude stage diving, two chicks screaming at eachother in the pit and the singer trying to get them kicked out, bass player getting nailed in the head with a guitar, one of the guitar players jumping into the crowd while still playing and didn't seem to miss a note (hard to tell...haha), and a shit load more. Fun Fun Fun. I still don't understand how they play like they do. I can barely play guitar while walking around, these guys are having fucking seizures on stage and not fucking up.

 

Most of my other concert experiences have been pretty forgettable.

I saw the Who last summer in Camden, probably the best live show I have ever seen, and I am not even a very big fan of theirs.

 

Kid Rock in Camden was a good show as well, he knows how to entertain, and he did a little segment where he played every instrument on stage!

 

And of course, let's not forget 12/6/02. Guns N Roses. Philadelphia. RIOT! I had tickets to their next show two days later too. Nice time to have your meltdown Axl.

 

Oh, and let's not forget going to see the 21st Century Doors earlier this year. It was cool to see Ray and Robby, and Ian Astbury did a nice job on vocals. Of course a picture of Morrison flashing in the background got the biggest pop of the night,

I got a little liquored up before hand and ended up breaking a bone in my hand punching out ceiling tiles.

 

It was one of the most disappointing nights of my life.

 

On a more positive concert memory note (kind of), I saw the last Allman Brothers concert that Allen Woody played in. It was about a week before he died and it was just amazing.

Seeing Roger Waters do 3+ hours of material in 2000 was my crowning concert achievement. I marked out HARDCORE when he did all 9 parts of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" with old pictures and video footage of Syd Barrett. it was definitely creampantsworthy.

 

When I see B.B. King on 11 November at the Capitol Music Hall, I'll have a review up. That show should be phoenominal as well.

I saw digital underground 2 years ago and while I am sure it was nothing like seeing them back in the day, I did get to go and party with them on their tour bus afterwards. There was so much weed smoking going on, just WOW. Some chick staying in the hotel smelled the weed and she came out of her hotel room and signaled to us that she wanted to smoke with us. It was great.

 

My first Pantera show was kicked off by a stabbing outside, so that certainly wisen'd me up to the danger of metal concerts at the ripe age of 15.

The best show's i've seen have been this year actually:

 

Oct 1 2003: Hawksley Workman. My first time seeing Hawksley live and surely not my last after that show. It was perhaps the most unique performances i've ever seen. Hawksley's eccentric stage presence made the show all the more better and he really seemed touch from the crowd response.

 

Sep 26 2003: Holly McNarland. 4th Holly show, but this was a live DVD shoot, as was evident by her incredible performance including her cover of "In The Air Tonight" which is probably my favourite cover song of all time. The camera panned on us several times so I definetly got some decent airtime on that DVD

 

Sep 17 2003: Fuel. I didn't hear about the show till the day of. Really bad promotion job, but I guess it made the show all the more better due to the intimate feel. Awesome performance

 

1999-2003: All ten Matthew Good/Matthew Good Band shows. Natually, he's my favourite artist and he never fails to dissapoint.

 

1996: Bryan Adams. My first concert so it has sentimental value. He played his old stuff so it was an awesome show overall.

 

Oh, and tonight i'll be seeing Radiohead!

Frank Black & The Catholics, The Sheffield Leadmill, Feb 2001 is the greatest show I have ever seen. He came back this month and gave a good show that made me appreciate the new album more, but nothing will ever touch that fucking show.

Megadeth/Sevendust (WAAF Holiday Rage 2000)

Sevendust is AMAZING live. Just AMAZING. No pyro, nothing too special of a stage set-up. Just two trampolines for the guitarists/bassist to jump off of, and just TONS of energy.

And Megadeth needed to turn the mic up, and just work on their overall sound. I thought the setlist was outstanding, but I could barely make out more than maybe three songs. And they didn't play "Peace Sells" or "Hangar 18," which pissed the FUCK out of me.

 

Slayer (Extreme Steel Tour 2001)

My first Slayer show. Of course, they were on right after Static-X and right before Pantera, so most people that didn't know of Slayer were just using this set as a "chill" set. It still astounded me and my buddy Steve-O, who were already getting to Slayer enough as-is, to go out and literally become the biggest Slayer fans in our town for a while.

 

Rob Zombie (Merry Mayhem/WAAF Holiday Rage 2001)

As my buddy Steve-O pointed out: "All that and a bunch o' tits." Sure, the band wasn't too great live, but the stage show was INSANE. Robots, kaiju, zombies, demons, monster, horror and porno clips on a projector in the background...great show, overall. Even covered a few old White Zombie tunes ("Super Charger Heaven," "Thunderkiss '65," and "More Human Than Human" of course).

 

Slayer (H82K2)

After having to suffer through Soulfly's shittiness, and be pleased through In Flames' awesomeness, the band I came to see performed. Great show, man. GREAT SHOW.

 

Flipp/Black Label Society/Disturbed (WAAF LocoBazooka 2002)

These were only 3 of the 40 or so bands performing that day. And they were the 3 best.

Flipp is GREAT. Great tunes, great show, and great charisma. I'm amazed Flipp aren't huge, since party rock seems to be back, and Flipp are, essentially, a blend of the Sex Pistols and KISS. The live show consisted of mostly just some Flipp tunes, but a few audience members were chosen to participate in playing tunes (including a cover of "Iron Man" that wasn't too bad).

Black Label Society...'nuff said. I was actually applauded by a few middle aged men covered in beer for yelling at the radio DJ that was buying time for Zakk and co. to get the fuck off the stage. "Demise Of Sanity" was AWESOME live. Zakk got pegged in the face with one of those long plastic bottles of beer (the kind that are, practically, a yard long) during the middle of a solo, and didn't miss a note. NOT A SINGLE NOTE. Zakk is my idol.

Disturbed were great live, too. They headlined Loco '02, and I wasn't too thrilled to see them, but this show made me a fan. Then "Prayer" came out in early '03, I believe, and I'm a Disturbed fan now.

 

Misfits (Misfits World Tour 2002)

Jerry, Dez, and Marky rule. Jerry's a horrible vocalist, but he has SO MUCH fucking energy onstage that you can't HELP but love 'em live. The PA system fucked up for the first third of the set, so after concluding a bunch of Black Flag, Ramones, and Sex Pistols covers as the final third of the set, Jerry apologized for the PA, and the band played the ENTIRE first third of the set over again. He signed autographs for anybody that came up to him afterwards, and chatted with everybody.

 

Shadows Fall and Nevermore (New England Hardcore & Metal Festival 2003, Night 1)

We were late for the show. By the time me, Suzy, and her brother Burak arrived, Shadows Fall had just began their first song ("A Fire In Babylon," FYI). I'm glad I didn't miss their set, as they were the reason I showed up (surprised, eh?). They ended the set with "Of One Blood," and I was a little peeved at the fact that there was no "Stepping Outside The Circle" or "The Art Of Balance," considering "Stepping..." was the first song to get attention for the new album, and "Balance" was the title track of the new album.

Nevermore tore the fucking house down.

 

Metallica (Summer Sanitarium 2003)

It's Metallica. 'Nuff said.

 

Motörhead, Iron Maiden (forget the name of the tour, 2003)

Lemmy is God. That should be enough to cover Motörhead. It was funny, because right before "Ace Of Spades," Lemmy went "I'll bet this is the only song you people fucking know, eh?"

Maiden was...great. I'm lost as to finding a word to truly describe how amazing they are live. Bruce is the best frontman EVER in ANY band, and the rest of the band was great live. During "The Highlander," Nicko did a Riverdance behind his drumset during the intro. 'Twas funny. Bruce even ranted on how Lars Ulrich is a pussy for saying he cares about P2P servers, and how Dance Of Death was coming out soon. He went on to suggest buying it, but if you want to download tunes to check it out, feel free. But please, buy it. Haha, Bruce RULES!

 

The Dickies, Misfits (FiendFest '03)

The Dickies...hilarious. That's all I can say about them. I couldn't hear a fucking word Leonard said during the songs, but his stand-up routine in-between songs was funnier than almost any modern stand-up comedian around. During the final song, he had a hand-puppet of a penis that he would sing with.

And, of course, Jerry and Dez and Marky owned ass again. I got my ticket stub signed by Jerry (whose signature looks like "49," oddly enough), and my buddy Jason got his Chucks signed by Jerry. Good times were had by all. I got a bloodied lip, and chatted for a little bit with a TNA fan (who I noticed by his TNA Raven "Flock You" shirt).

 

On Friday, I'm seeing Slayer (with Hatebreed, Dry Kill Logic, and ARCH FUCKING ENEMY). On Halloween, if I can find a ride, I'm seeing Unearth, Lamb Of God, Killswitch Engage (who I'm listening to right now), and SHADOWS FALL as part of the Headbanger's Ball Tour.

Honestly, as far as just pure energy goes, Sevendust probably does take the cake. I have all their CDs and am a fan but am willing to admit they're not anything great outside of Lajon who can just flat out sing. But live? Forget it, I've never seen anyone able to touch their set. Great intensity and it was nice to hear Lajon actually be able to do all he does on the albums and more.

 

I'll remember the Metallica concert event for all the wrong reasons. It was when they went out with Korn, Kid Rock and System Of A Down (first Summer Sanitarium I believe) and I have forever after been confused how they got a rep as a great live act. Newsted was a GREAT showman who knew how to work a stage but everyone else just stood there and did nothing, no stage presence what so ever. Didn't help that earlier in the day, System Of A Down had nearly torn the place down with their insane set.

 

Oh yeah, speaking of them, Pledge Of Allegiance tour with them, Rammstein, Slipknot and No One. Mudvayne cancelled, which was fine by me and everyone else proceded to do a fun show. Well except No One. Slipknot is wretched but have a lot of energy. Nothing really needs to be said about Rammstein. I usually try to come up with a good reason for liking something but fuck it, their pyro was just cool dammit.

AWESOME, like 3 hours, Music, Pyro, more Music.... after that... I could die happy.

 

 

Some other good:

 

Rolling Stones: Voodo Lounge Tour. You have to see the Stones at least once.

 

Metallica: Black Album Tour. You can hear me and the rest of mexicans screaming on the boxed set, a few years ago.

 

Jaguares. Incredible concert.

 

Sadly I missed both Paul McCartney tours and Eric Clapton. Well, at least I got them on DVD.

2 favorites for me:

 

Ozzfest 1999

 

This was during the height of my Sabbath/Ozzy worship (still a huge fan of course) and so I was pumped beyond belief to see the Sabbath reunion. After a great show featuring Rob Zombie, Deftones, Primus, Slayer, System of a Down, Godsmack, and others, Black Sabbath came out and quite tore the roof off of the joint (figuratively, since it was an outdoor stadium )

 

Radiohead

 

An absolutely awesome live performance, which I wasn't expecting when I first got tickets. I figured that because of their style of music they wouldn't be as good live as they are in studio, but it turned out that they were actually better, taking intricate, introspective songs and turning them into hard-rocking anthems just by doing everything with guitars instead of effects. Their show was balls-out right from the start and they played something ridiculous like 10 encores. At one point they left the stage (for the second time) and then came back out again after something like a 5-10 minute standing ovation that just got louder and louder.

Here comes the big list...

 

Rage Against the Machine - Tied for best performance ever. These guys had intensity and energy I don't think I'll ever see matched anywhere. People moshing in the stands, the second level of the arena undulating, and one of the craziest mosh pits I've ever seen.

 

Tool - The other band tied for best performance ever. These guys had presence and where so amazingly solid. Add to the great musical performance some great videos as well as some nice stage set up (including the Sacred Mirrors) my jaw was left on the floor.

 

Less Than Jake - I've seen these guys almost 10 times and each one of them has been super happy fun time. The shows are such a party and crowds are so much fun.

 

Nine Inch Nails - From some of the angriest moments to some of the saddest moments, the show had a little bit of everything. And yes, I did almost cry during "Hurt".

 

Deftones - These guys get a bad rap due to Chino's drinking habits, but personally I've never had a problem with them. Then again they are my favorite band. From playing in the rain at Ozzfest 98 to tearing it up infront of a half filled crowd on the Back to School tour to playing in front of punks at the Warped Tour, each show has been stellar.

 

Ween - Words cannot describe the awesomeness of this band.

 

Rammstein - Til is an incredible front man in any language, and the fire is just in-fucking-sane.

I haven't been to too many concerts. I've been to two Tool shows, Incubus, Unloco, Ra, and Theory of a Deadman.

 

The best concert was the second Tool show, but I was in the front row for Ra so that was pretty awesome.

-Weezer in April 2002. I'm a huge fan and they put on an unbelievable show.

-The Tea Party in April 2002. Jeff Martin is an amazing guitarist and they put on an incredible 2 hour set.

-Ozzy in June 2003. What can I say? It's FUCKING Ozzy.

Ozzfest 1999

I caught that tour as well..Primus, Slayer, AND Sabbath?? How could I say no? Pretty much everyone other band's performance was mediocre--> sucked donkeys, but those three made up for it. Fear Factory was pretty tight as well. Crowd was good throughout. Plenty of mayhem and intoxication.

 

I went in 98, which was better, considering Tool shook the earth.

 

When they came around in 2000, I pretty much went just to check out the up and comers on second stage (which was disappointing) and to see Pantera again (who completely fucking blew.)

 

The other three times I saw those guys, they were lightyears better. At Ozzfest, the crowd didn't know their shit (wtf?), and Phil wasn't even motivated to do good. Therefore, they went through the motions, and walked off stage to polite clapping and token cheers. Awful performance.

KISS Reunion Tour-Fleetcenter in Boston, 1996. Went there with my cousin and had floor seats, center stage vicinity, 7 rows back. Between the music and the energy they put forth in that concert, it was a blast.

 

Freestyle Rush Tour 2003-Just a few weeks back. To say I'm a big fan of freestyle music is an understatement. To this day it eats up about 80% of my playlist, and I'm always looking for more of it to add. Growing up, my cousin was a backup performer (vocals, dancing) for Stevie B., one of the major freestyle artists who crossed over and had quite a few Top 40 hits in the late 80's-mid 90's. So the lineup included Stevie B., TKA, K7 (who is one of the TKA guys, but had a smash single in the mid 90's with "Come Baby Come"), George Lamond, Lisa Lisa, Coro, and Rob Base and DJ EZ Rock. The venue was the Providence Performing Arts Center, which is by no means a small place. I went there with a friend of mine and my cousins, and this had to be the best concert experience EVER. The place was sold out, packed to teh rafters, and every single act kept the energy flowing, to the point where not ONE PERSON was sitting down. Instead they were dancing, singing, even filling up the aisles and being allowed up on the stage to dance with the artists at various points. Just a tremendous scene.

 

BTW, OldSchool, you saw The Cover Girls and BBD? You have no idea how much I envy you right now.

Definately, the Saturday night of the Scottish music festival, T in the Park, was the most memorable event for me.

 

REM, the legends of the weekend, while not on their A-game, were CERTAINLY one of the best bands of the weekend. The Flaming Lips were adding the awesome element to the day, after replacing The White Stripes, they put on a show which was worthy of the spot they were taking.

 

Of course, The Proclaimers playing '500 Miles' live was just great as well, as 40,000 people jumping and singing in unison was achieved. Not even REM could do it.
