This shit is impossible. I have to leave out too many of my favorite bands. Like Heart, The Doors, etc.

Let's see, some of my favorite bands of all-time:

Pink Floyd

Led Zeppelin

The Rolling Stones

Heart

Bruce Springsteen

The Eagles

Pearl Jam

Guns N' Roses

Stone Temple Pilots

Soundgarden

Alice In Chains

Some of my current favorite bands:

Creed

Spiderbait

Probot

Seether

Tenacious D

Ok, so now to break those down to five:

Led Zeppelin paved the way for a lot of those bands. So did The Rolling Stones. I'd like to think that they led to a lot of the "hair bands" from the 80's which spawned the garage/alt rock of the early 90's. So that's where we got Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees, etc.

So because of that, Led Zeppelin has to be on my list. I liked Soundgarden, Pearl Jam & Stone Temple Pilots the best out of all the Alternative phase. I was never really big on Nirvana.

I assume bands like Creed & Seether came about because of pop music and time passing on the alternative music. Seether only has one album so far (that I'm aware of) so they can't really be considered. Tenacious D are more a comedy act. Probot & Spiderbait I just discovered recently, so they aren't close to the top yet, but I wanted to name drop them. Guns N' Roses pretty much made up my childhood. I went through a two to three year phase of Alice in Chains, but I got tired of them. You can't go wrong with the Stones or The Boss, but I didn't have too many songs that I liked from them. Just a dozen or so each. <_< Creed is my band of the moment. Have been since around '99. So, a final five (although I know it won't be accurate):

  • Led Zeppelin
  • Pink Floyd
  • Guns N' Roses
  • Stone Temple Pilots (over Soundgarden & Pearl Jam :( )
  • Creed

I don't have to explain anything. I like what I like. Everyone has different tastes.

I don't get all of this "all time" and "current" stuff? Explain the difference.

"current" is irrelevant

"all time" is what matters

And ultimately, is there a difference?

I guess that for the "current" list, it's who you've been listening to the most, and the "all-time" list is just your five favourite artists of all-time.

I'm also in for an explanation for Creed. Are you in a delusional state of mind that suddenly Creed seems like a good band, or is there just nothing else to listen to.

Big ups to ian. for having Blind Melon on his list. They don't seem to get much love 'round these parts.

My all-time/current hybrid:

1. Dave Matthews Band

2. Jack Johnson

3. Tenacious D

4. Seal

5. Norah Jones

I'm really feeling The Roots and Dre 3000. And I'm starting to get into Zero 7 as well as Blue Six.

Yes, I think that there's a big time difference.

There are four bands on my "all-time list" of favorites that I haven't listened to in months. But if I was going to get stuck on a desert island and got to pick the music of 5 acts to take with me, both of them would easily make the cut. So, they're not in my current, as-I-type-this top 5 but would be in my all-time, regardless-of-time-and-date top 5. The ones in my current list are the ones that I find myself listening to the most, right here and now, and thus would list them as my current favorites.

I like Creed because Tremonti is a damn good guitarist and I like Stapp's voice. Just like I like Weilands voice and Eddie Vedder's voice. Scott Phillips isn't amazing on the drums, but he's not horrible either, so he doesn't get in the way. They are a rock band, and I like their sound. I own all three of their albums, and will probably pick up the solo Stapp album. I also have all of their songs on MP3, including a lot of live songs and cover songs.

It's no different than anyone else liking a band that I don't like. I think they are a good band, and if you don't, well that's fine. It's your opinion. I'm just curious how many people have actually heard the Creed songs other than what got radio/MTV play however. Actually, I don't care about that either, because I don't want to sit and listen to people say shit like "yeah, I downloaded some songs and they all sounded the same and sucked." First reason why is because I probably won't believe them anyway. Afterall, it's not hard to lie on-line. Secondly, I don't want to have to defend my opinions on something like music. There is a reason why there are so many different bands and genres.

Actually, I probably shouldn't have even made this reply. I get tired of having to explain myself. I don't go around asking people why they listen to Tool or Radiohead.

"They're a Christian rock band!" "They're a fake Christian rock band!" "All their songs sound the same." "Scott Stapp whines too much." "They're a wannabe Pearl Jam/Nirvana/Stone Temple Pilots/Soundgarden/etc."

I've heard it all and it gets fucking old.

Creed are hilarious. For that reason only, they're better than all the other candidates for 'worst band ever'. But yeah, I prefer not to discuss them, because that is a pastime of which the natural lifespan has expired.

Coldplay are ten times more irritating, talentless and overrated. I think I'm gonna sue them.

When I was reading this earlier I thought to myself "I'm glad to see that nobody has listed Blink 182".

I'm now in tears.

All the other punk acts that existed before those fuckers called to say that they're lots better and you should listen to them instead.

And the guy who likes Creed and defends it by saying "they don't suck" needs medical help.

I think I'll take...

Black Flag (if just for Damaged)

Johnny Cash

Miles Davis

The Pixies

Bob Dylan

Thank you for the opportunity to post the most eclectic top 5 thus far. The also-rans would include Matthew Sweet, Neutral Milk Hotel, Iggy & the Stooges, Television, Hüsker Dü, the Ramones, the Rolling Stones (69-72), the Clash, PJ Harvey, Liz Phair, Big Black, Zep, Hendrix, the Flaming Lips, Radiohead, Tom Waits, Jeff Buckley, Elvis Costello, and (last but certainly not least) the Tom Collins (who just need more albums to crack that top 5).
