JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2004 After reading the Wrestlefest 97 thread and reading about Dory Funk vs. Rob Van Dam, it got me thinking? What's the biggest styles clash of a match you've ever seen? I'm not talking about a squash or anything, but an actual match with some length to it. And did the match end up being any good? Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2004 I'd say it's pretty darn common and there actually have been some good ones...as discussed in earlier threads the Diesel/Bret Hart series that ran through 94 and 95 produced good matches...HBK/Diesel in 95 and again in 96 was good...UT/Mankind matches for the most part were good...unless you're talking EXTREME clashes like Rey Mysterio against Big Show... Guest Staravenger Report post Posted August 9, 2004 I'll have to go with....Chris Benoit vs. Nathan Jones (blech!) Randy Savage vs. Giant Gonzalez worked many house shows in the spring & summer of 1993, and let's just say it was horrible.
JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2004 Speaking of a "styles clash" I suppose TNA's match with AJ Styles vs. Sandman was one.
strummer 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2004 I believe there was a JunkYard Dog v Great Muta match scheduled for an early NWA PPV or Clash but JYD was replaced by Doug Gilbert (not 100% sure it was him). That would have been up there with Dory v RVD in terms of clashing styles.

Just John 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2004 At one WWE ppv a couple years ago, William Regal fought Jeff Hardy. The match was awful.
Guest Fook Report post Posted August 9, 2004 Regal vs RVD at WMX8 One's a ground worker with stiff, realisic offence and the other's a high flyer with sloppy, contrived offence with neither sure how to sell the other's work.

You can chalk that up to RVD not knowing how to sell ANYTHING.

Aero 0 Report post Posted August 9, 2004 HBK-Mankind from Mind Games. The styles worked well together, though, and the result was a classic.

King Kamala 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2004 Juvy Vs Reese GAB 98. I remember this was actually a mini feud. Ah classic first hour Nitro *shudders* Rey Mysterio Vs Ric Flair main evented a Nitro in 99. That seems like a very interesting matchup.
MillenniumMan831 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2004 And it was supposed to be Flair vs. El Dandy But more importantly, Flair ended up waist deep in the pool.

TheFranchise 0 Report post Posted August 11, 2004 And it was supposed to be Flair vs. El Dandy But more importantly, Flair ended up waist deep in the pool. Did anybody not see that a mile away? And how come Mysterio took Dandy's number?? Why couldn't El Dandy have rung Steve Austin? THAT would have ruled all.
Lt. Al Giardello 0 Report post Posted August 14, 2004 Angle / Mysterio That isn't as bad as Dory Funk/RVD. They don't have the same style, but I wouldn't really call it a style clash. Plus, they had good matches.
Guest ally mccoist Report post Posted August 14, 2004 Dory/RVD- if you get a chance to watch it, do. The match itself is nothing, but Bill Alfonso is hilarious. He's at ringside the whole match just talking trash to Dory non-stop. The camara will go wide on the ring and you can still hear Fonzie going crazy. Great stuff. Guest Sykotic2002 Report post Posted August 15, 2004 Chris Beniot v. Madusa from the WCW Title tournament in 1999. William Regal v. Kane from a few weeks ago if they had more time would have certainly been a styles clash.
EVIL~! alkeiper 0 Report post Posted August 15, 2004 Big man vs. small wrestler isn't necessarily a styles clash. There's a natural story dynamic at work, and in the case of a Hart/Diesel type matchup, the wrestlers should have little trouble integrating it into the match. I think Funk/RVD is the best example given of a clash of wrestling styles. To add my own, Shane Douglas vs. Pit Bull II might be another good example. Its often cited as a match which involved different methods of match calling colliding.

CanadianChick 0 Report post Posted August 15, 2004 Regal vs RVD at WMX8 One's a ground worker with stiff, realisic offence and the other's a high flyer with sloppy, contrived offence with neither sure how to sell the other's work. It had an upside though: RVD getting dropped on his head. Say what you want about him, but damn can he bump.
natey2k4 0 Report post Posted August 17, 2004 Alex Wright vs Big Bubba Rogers (Big Bossman) from 95.. that was a styles clash for sure.
MillenniumMan831 0 Report post Posted August 18, 2004 And it was supposed to be Flair vs. El Dandy Hey, who are you to doubt El Dandy? That guy's a serious professional. Flair's a lucky man it wasn't Senor Dandy. That's for sure.
Guest Staravenger Report post Posted August 18, 2004 1.) Stevie Richards vs. Jerry Lawler from NWO 2001. Lawler's old school Memphis style vs. Richards ECW Hardcore Experience. 2.) Every Match from the TNA Super-X Cup III (Lucha Libre vs. UK Grapplers). A seriously fucked up booking job. I wouldn't call any big man/little man match a clash for the same reason someone else just explained.
