Nile-"The Blessed Dead."

The very opening chord on the album knocks your teeth out.

Smashing Pumpkins' "Thru The Eyes Of Ruby" has been my favourite intro for a long time.

Runners up would be Suede's "Animal Nitrate" and Elliot Smith's "Junkbond Trade".

Good topic. The right intro can change the mood you're in in a second.

Sick Of It All - Clobberin' Time (well, not the very opening, I tend to FF over the KRS-One introduction and then just start at the bass)

Some recent favorites:

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs, “YControl.” The end of “Maps” smoothly transitions into one of the finest pop rock riffs in recent memory. Thunderously good.

M83’s “Run Into Flowers.” A wham of sound up there with MBV’s “Only Shallow.”

The Exploding Hearts, “Modern Kicks.” Sounds like the bastard child of “Rocks Off” and the Buzzcocks. It’s the happiest power-pop-punk melody in all the land.

"Davidian" - Machine Head

Best slow metal groove riff ever.

:face gets crushed under the heaviness of it all:

Scanning my brain with the words "Slow metal groove riff," I've come up with the following two prime choices:

Nile-"Unas, Slayer of the Gods"

Chugging perfection, with the deepest, cleanest attack you'll hear in heavy metal. It climbs in huge strides, and tumbles back down to great resolutions in an interesting manner in the main riff of the song.

Acid Bath-"Toubabo Koomi"

Just past the angry punked out first half of the song, the sedatives kick in, and hard. Great pull-off timing from the guitar, a hollow TINK of a ride cymbal every few beats, the music drags itself along totally spent. It's beautiful.

Given how much you said you loved Machine Head, you'd be more likely to enjoy the second mention before the first, but both are excellent if you take an interest in metal.

Good call on the M83 track. I saw the video while inebriated and it kinda scared me but the song is fabulous.

Acid Bath-"Toubabo Koomi"

Seconded.

The Verve - "Bitter Sweet Symphony." The violins draw you in, and the drums and tambourine keep you there.

Not really a song-song, but I doubt there are many people who don't recognize the opening notes of the Star Wars main theme.

Berlin - "Take My Breath Away." In just a couple of seconds, loads of emotion and feeling just materialize, and then that first drum hits and it's on.

"Raining Blood." Just the echo of the open Eb chord as it fades away, and the sound of rain pouring while the tom's just hit the same three beats every few seconds. A clash of thunder, and then you know you're fucking dead, and just along for the ride.

Misfits - "We Are 138." Just simple repetitions of the E-C-D chord progression, but the opening faded E chord gets you pumped.

Nice to see "For Whom The Bell Tolls" get some love. Been listening to that today for no reason. That intro sounds so huge, it's nuts.
