JoeDirt 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 What are some examples of fans cheering "bad guys" before the whole "Attitude" era and shades of gray and all that? For example, I remember a WCW match in Philadelphia where the crowd cheers for Arn and Tully bigtime over the Dynamic Dudes. Arn low blows Shane Douglas to just a MASSIVE pop. What are some other examples of fans going against the grain and cheering for the bad guys at a time when babyfaces tended to get cheered no matter what? alfdogg 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 Philly has been a "cheer the heel" city as long as I can remember. SummerSlam '90 is another show that will show this, as Power & Glory got a pretty big pop after beating the Rockers.
Lil' Bitch 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 At Wrestlemania IV, the crowd was basically all for Demolition as Strike Force got no love. Lex Luger, the face, got the fuck booed out of him against Savage at Superbrawl VIII.
Guest Staravenger Report post Posted August 31, 2004 Sid Vicious was pretty much cheered no matter what. In WCW, in WWF (especially at SSeries 96), and again as the Millennium Man.

Guest Ray Report post Posted August 31, 2004 The best is when 'heel' Jumbo Tsuruta would slap someone around with disgust....then raise his hand and have the fans behind himself again instantly.
Addy 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 Sid at Royal Rumble 92. That was hilarious.
Black Lushus 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 I know Ted DiBiase would get pops from time to time...Randy Savage did too, he made cool heel cool waaaaay before HHH even thought about it...Mr. Perfect also got pops...

Australian Pride 0 Report post Posted August 31, 2004 The Undertaker (1991 version) was getting some big face reactions, which is partly why they turned him.
Guest Mindless_Aggression Report post Posted September 1, 2004 Ric Flair is the most obvious example. They'd be booing the hell out of him during promo time, but as soon as he was in the ring, they loved him again. Steamboat, Sting, Luger, they all got booed against Flair. Honestly, Dusty Rhodes big goofy ass may have been the only person a crowd got totally behind against Flair.
Guest TheZsaszHorsemen Report post Posted September 1, 2004 I know at Starrcade 87 the crowd just SHAT all over Ronnie Garvin and cheered Flair. Oh and the reason Flair was cheered against Steamboat was because he was pushing the inane "family values" gimmick, and saying that Flair was disgracing the ttile by sleeping with so many women etc. Kurt Angle was ripping off his schtick in the Eddy feud leading up to Mania XX. DCMaximo 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2004 Kidman over X-Pac at Invasion-seriously, how could they think that X-Pac would get face heat? The best bit was JR trying to claim the fans were behind X-Pac, while "X-Pac sucks" chants were clearly audiable
Guest The Decadent Slacker Report post Posted September 12, 2004 The Freebirds/Renegare Warriors(?) match at one of the Havocs (i honestly don't remember what show it was, i haven't seen in a while). Hayes even went for the total gay cheap heat look, & they still got a huge face reaction. The Outsiders of course deserve a mention there as well. They made being a cool heel in the modern era cool. At least as far as i can remember at this point in time.
Rendclaw 0 Report post Posted September 12, 2004 Considering Flair engineered jumping Dusty in the parking lot, no wonder the fans got behind him. But short of pulling a gun or a knife on someone in the ring and murdering them outright, Flair could do little wrong in the old NWA days.

Guest Staravenger Report post Posted September 13, 2004 Sting got cheered over Hogan,Hart and Benoit during his short heel run in WCW. Who would honestly boo Sting? The guy was not a good heel, and when he was in 99, he was too damn funny to not like.
JHawk 0 Report post Posted September 13, 2004 Pretty much any heel in Philly. Halloween Havoc 92 is probably the best example of this, with Michael Hayes, Arn Anderson, and Bobby Eaton getting absolutely amazing pops throughout their match with Shane Douglas, Johnny Gunn, and Tom Zenk. DCMaximo 0 Report post Posted September 13, 2004 Remember Tom Brandi, AKA Sal Sincere? He started off in WCW as a "firey young babyface" and teamed with Tom Zenk. He wore very fetching pink trunks too. He's pictured here on the left alongside Zenk (picture to big to post) The most macho team ever...
Slingshot Suplex 0 Report post Posted September 13, 2004 The Dynamic Dudes got no love back then. I laughed when Jim Cornette turned against the Dudes to a massive pop from the crowd.
Guest Super Leather Report post Posted September 14, 2004 Wrestlemania II when the crowd turned on Mr. T and started cheering Roddy Piper in their boxing match. Great stuff! Even as a little kid, I was like "why is Mr. T in a match? He's not a wrestler..." Later on Piper does a promo with McMahon and Susan St. James in which he starts off with "Ya know, if I'd known I was coming to a picnic, I'da brought a lunch!" Shooting Star 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2004 RVD was getting huge pops in his match against Jericho despite being a hell at the time at Unforgiven 2001 but as far as i remember the Philly crowds always cheer the heels.

Shanghai Kid 0 Report post Posted September 14, 2004 The biggest example I can remember is HBK getting cheered over Diesel at Wrestlemania 11. It was an even crowd through out the match, but when HBK superkicked Diesel and the ref was knocked out and couldn't make the count, the crowd absolutely shat over Diesel making a comeback and retaining the title. Also, NWO was pretty much cheered from the start. The Rock was the one who absolutely took it and ran with being the cool heel who got cheered.
