EMO music: love it, hate it?

EMOtional music in my mind is a big thing, well to me anyway, I have recently joined a new music forum (not gonna post a link might get in trouble for advertising) but everyone seems to be against EMO, and I was just wondering if it was the same here.

Good Examples of EMO are:

My Chemical Romance

Funeral for a Friend

Underoath

Atreyu

Avenged Sevenfold

Taking Back Sunday

You'll find emo is generally considered to be a dirty word here, although personally I find emo can be great in the right hands. Funeral For A Friend are utterly tremendous, probably the best live act Britain has produced for ages and My Chemical Romance are also marvellous. Taking Back Sunday are really hit or miss I find, more often than not as a miss. The problem with emo is not falling into the trap of being really sickeningly whining, which is the problem with bands like Dashboard Confessionals or wank like Midtown. Brand New are slowly evolving as a band, with "Deja Entendu" being much better than their debut, the OneLineDrawing album "The Volunteers" was one of the smartest, most inventive albums released in 2004 and with above-average acts like Bullet For My Valentine and Alexisonfire looking to break through this year, the outlook for superior-emo is pretty good. Not sure I'd call Avenged Sevenfold emo though...

Jesus. You really are the worst poster here. (Not you, DCMaximo.)

The bands you listed are some of the worst recording right now; it's infantile, puerile stuff with basic lyrics, basic instrumentation, and little genuine passion. It's music made for a specific demographic, which is generally a bad call.

The only bright mark for what gets called "emo' today is that I've heard that a bunch of the bands put on good live shows. One example is Vendetta Red, who were wonderfully spunky live, but whining simps on record.

despite it being a worked poster...I'll go along with the apparent intent of the thread.

Emo music is decent at spurts. I still don't know exactly classifies as Emo. I know I hate Dashboard and that's always been classified as Emo.

I kinda like somethings.

but all in all it's a shitty genre.

Those are good examples of emo? More like bad examples of music.

Metal, indie rock, and Frank Zappa seems to be the most popular stuff here.

I don't so much mind emo music, but I tend to find emo fans to be very annoying (or at least the ones who went to my high school).

I see nothing wrong with My Chemical Romance (minus that "I'm Not Okay" song, which is just tailor made for whiny teens) and Atreyu. Funeral For a Friend as well, though I can't get into some of their songs.

Taking Back Sunday is rather hit or miss, and I haven't listened to Avenged Sevenfold or Underoath enough to make a judgement.

Bands like Dashboard Confessional, though, are pretty worthless. Except for, of course, getting the girl you brought with your free tickets riled up and in the mood.

These bands make me want to gouge out my eardrums and learn sign language so that I'll never be able to hear their shit again.

Avenged Sevenfold is TERRIBLE, because the music is pretty good...but the vocals are awful, and the lyrics even worse. The fact that people fucking LIKE them for any other reason than the guitarists are decent makes me wonder about the fate of humanity.

No way is that song meant to be taken seriously. Of course, I haven't heard a single other song by My Chemical Romance, but "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" is waaaaaay too over-the-top to be considered a serious statement of any kind.

Emo fans will also try to look like (and act) like Rivers Cumos of Weezer, which is sad.

I hate living in my area, all it is are people listening to shitty emo bands, even Canadian emo bands like Billy Talent, and the lesser, more local group here Alexisonfire, and "The Scene" that Alexisonfire left.

I was actually just about to say this. I don't mind Avenged Sevenfold's band, but the singer is absolutely horrid, and the lyrics to go with it. The band can rock out at times and he really wusses them out.

Emo sucks, every band sucks unless only me and 2 other people have every heard of them.

Err, I mean...I like a good chunk of the stuff that's considered "emo" or "screamo." Although I hate that every type of music is labled right now, just makes it easy for people who don't know much about it to lop it into one group and proclaim they hate it all.

Now I'm going to run to the bathroom and cry myself to sleep on the crapper...that's what people who like Jimmy Eat World do.

Emo is different things to different people.

If you're referring to pop-punk or screamo type stuff, I like a lot of it. As far as the pop-punk part of that goes, I mean punk style music that has poppy hooks- I.E. Green Day, my favorite band. I can't stand most songs by Good Charlotte or Simple Plan.

Out of the bands you mentioned, I love Taking Back Sunday and I think My Chemical Romance's latest CD is pretty good and the rest of the songs are better than, "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)". I also like some of the softer emo type stuff like Straylight Run.

I just always love a well-written emotional song. When I write lyrics, what comes out is usually something involving love, heartbreak, and/or relationships in general, and songs of that style touch on something within that hopeless romantic that lives inside me.

I'm sure many people here will disagree with my opinions, but hey- At least it's not Ashlee Simpson.

I must add a disclaimer, however- I do not purport to be "emo", I do not dress "emo", and I do enjoy lots of other types of music.

None of that probably made any sense, but it's hard to think and type wenn yo'r drubk.....

Just kidding. I'm exhausted, but regrettably still sober. No drunk posts tonight. You still get the senseless rambling portion of it, though.

You know, more people like rap than metal here. It's true. Although there are less where it is the primary musical fancy.

Goddamn you, don't lump Billy Talent in with the Emo crowd. I outta beat you.

We need a bigger following of musique concrete.

If you like musique concrete, get Meet The Residents.
