Guest Jack Potts Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 I've read reports suggesting that WWE management wasn't quite happy with Maven's progress, to date. I agree that although he's in great shape and does a pretty good promo, his ring work has been generally rather average. With that said, I think if Maven adopts that pulldown backbreaker as a full-time finisher, it will be a huge step in the right direction to build more fan interest in Maven. JHawk was correct in his assessment that the crowd's surprise pop for the finish was considerable. It's a unique, explosive finisher that looks legitimately painful. Besides that, it is much better than his contrived flying DDT. Do you think they'll let him keep it, or do you think this was a one-night only shot to pay off on the back work Maven was doing on the Hurricane?
Black Lushus Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 I dug it, I hope he keeps it...of course I also hope they DON'T keep HIM, but oh well...
Dandy Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 They'll definitely let him keep it. Why wouldn't they?
Guest Joe_G Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 I missed Raw. Could someone describe Maven's new move?
Dandy Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 From behind, Maven grabs his opponent's head/face with both hands, kind of like Edge's Edgecution. He falls to his back while doubling his knees up toward his chest and resting them on his opponent's back. this causes a pretty impactful backbreaker (if sold right).
Open the Muggy Gate Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 I hope he keeps it. The crowd sold it as pretty damn brutal.
Guest Coffey Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 It's not even the first time that the move has been used on Raw, let alone the first time it's been used. Regal has done it before for example. I believe it was against Rob Van Dam.
starvenger Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 It's all about the wrestler. The crowd seems to accept that Regal will do some stiff shit, so the impact of such a move may be lessened. Maven, not so much, so he pulls that move out, and it has THAT much more impact. Of course, I'm just speculating here.
Dandy Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 I liked it because he needed a finisher.
Guest Shane Legend Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 Somebodys been watching Ring Of Honor! (John Walters uses the move and calls it the lung puncher)
Mrnoitaull Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 Rico used to use this finisher right before he was released.
JoeDirt Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 Actually Walters calls it the Lung Blower.
UseTheSledgehammerUh Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 Edge-O-Matic (not Edgecution), but the opponent's back hits Maven's knees, instead of the mat. Do you people read the Raw thread? This has been asked at least 3 times.
EricMM Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 Just sign John Walters!! He's better than maven...
JoeDirt Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 Just sign John Walters!! He's better than maven... Except he went to the Steve Blackman school of charisma...the man isn't over in ROH at all and he's the pure champion. Well, maybe his heel turn will help. Maybe Maven can stick with a finisher now!
Ripper Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 Maven has a ton of potential though. I mean, he STILL hasn't been wrestling very long, and he has been learning in the WWE system. But he does have charisma as a heel and actually has some as a face in match terms(the character was boring) I have always said, a good finisher that can be hit quickly is all you need to get over with a crowd. You need something that can be teased and add tension to a match. Now Maven has this, and I actually liked the style that had in the Match against Hurricane. I got high hopes for him.
Guest Fook_Theta Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 It's a unique, explosive finisher that looks legitimately painful. Besides that, it is much better than his contrived flying DDT. Honestly, I think a top rope twisting version could be pretty awesome. Jumps off into facelock position, wraps himself around and behind the opponent, then pulls the opponents neck backwards while bringing his knees up. Not sure if he's agile enough to do it without injuries, but I could seriously buy him winning any type of match with it. Not that I foresee WWE treating "kidney" shots as particularly dangerous.
Guest Trivia247 Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 I don't know what it is, but for some reason i can't ever Take Maven Seriously as a wrestler, since seeing him train in Tough Enough. his Finisher is cool though
Guest Deadbolt Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 Maven is a very sloppy worker and I'm suprised they are letting him do this move because he could seriously injure someone if he doesn't do it right, and chances are Maven might not do it right.
B. Brian Brunzell Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 It was definitely a cool finisher, and Maven badly needs one. I was disappointed that I didn't get to see Hurrincane's inverted double-arm DDT.
Nevermortal Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 The Lung Blower is absolute death when done correctly. I approve.
Dandy Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 Good call on correcting me on the name of Edge's move. I've heard JR call every move Edge does as the Edgecution for so long that it must have burned into my memory or something.
Guest Trivia247 Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 JR doesn't even call the Edge o matic no mo just a nice takedown or whatever. You Coined the phrase you Okie BBQ slurping Hoss lover!
Black Lushus Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 until they figure out something better to do with Maven's eyebrows, I just can't accept watching him every week...
Lord of The Curry Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 That move got the "Oh snap!" reaction of the night from the crowd. I also approve.
Dobbs 3K Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 I thought Maven was really clicking last night...he seemed like he was wrestling a more aggressive heel-ish style, but without blatantly cheating. He was using psychology...I liked his running forearm to the Hurricane's back, and he also did a little more working of the back before executing his new finisher. Now I just wish he'd ditch those ugly yellow tights.
Lord of The Curry Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 I'm dissapointed that the live crowds haven't caught on with the swank "Maven swallows" chant that TO introduced to the world.
Guest Fook_Theta Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 Participating audience is one of the few areas Canada does trump America. Ofcourse Americans aren't stupid enough to make a "GO LEAFS GO" chant.
King Cucaracha Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 I didn't pop for it because I've seen it in the indies like 100 times from guys like Walters, Josh Abercrombie, Roderick Strong. You know, guys who can work. But I'm glad Maven's finally got a decent finisher and he's getting over with his mic work. Of course, it doesn't mean anything, because the bookers don't even rate him enough to give him a proper match (see New Years Revolution), but he still has a neat finisher.
Lord of The Curry Posted February 1, 2005 Report Posted February 1, 2005 Participating audience is one of the few areas Canada does trump America. Ofcourse Americans aren't stupid enough to make a "GO LEAFS GO" chant. I have no follow-up to that one. That chant was fucking retarded.
