Heels who got heel heat

Unlike a Flair, or Rock who where still cheered despite being called heels, and acting like heels. Who where the true heels? Guys that no matter what they did, the fans hated them (in a good way)?

 

-Jake the Snake. Unlike so many supposed heels, Roberts didn't do anything or say anything the fans could really cheer for. He was a sadistic evil heel.

 

-Ted Dibiase. An arrogant millionaire, who flashes his money around, and has rube audience members attempt simple tasks for quick cash. Only to kick the ball away, or put his foot on the guys back on the last push-up.

Rick Martel after he turned on Tito. That guy got HEAT the rest of his career.

 

 

The IRS character got Mike Rotunda(sp?) the kind of heat that noone could cheer.

If we're going by established wrestlers, Ted Dibiase. The guy couldn't buy a cheer I don't think from 1987-1997. Honkytonk Man as well. Even as a face everyone hated his guts.

 

In the opposite corner, Ricky Steamboat couldn't get heel heat if he killed Hulk Hogan.

Kurt Angle is pretty good at it. He gets heel heat as a face too, just because it is so fun to boo him. And he's certainly respected, so it isn't an X-Pac situation.

I'll second Rick Rude. Watch Superbrawl 2, that was incredible heel heat. He had that arrogance that wasn't even cool to cheer for, you just wanted to smack that smug look of his face, but knew he'd kill you if you tried.

Speaking from personal experience, it's very difficult for me to buy into the heel/face dynamic and I usually prefer the heels anyway. About the only people to get true heel heat from me were Vince and Shane. Good job, guys.

Jake is #1 for me. If you rewatch his fued with Savage, it still can pull at you. Cornette coudl never get me to cheer his men.

 

In a guy you probably would not think of, Jacque Rougeau. Tag Team or single, he always just pissed you off the way he talked.

We already know WWF/E Main Eventers The Undertaker and Triple H have no sold death... several times, so you're probably right. Hell, even the Big Show no sold being knocked off the roof of Cobo Hall.

Eh, Ricky Steamboat got heel heat against Lex Luger as a face during their match at GAB 89. And he got heel heat against Ric Flair too.

That might be a case of liking someone more than the other person. Steamboat was too much of a nice guy to be a believable heel.

There's a difference between booing someone because you hate them, and booing them just because they're going against really popular. That's what you got with Steamboat against Flair or Luger. They didn't hate Steamboat; they just liked his opponent more. It wasn't heel heat, and there is a big difference between that and what Steamboat was getting.

For the most part of his heel run in WCW, Hogan could get amazing heel heat

 

Also, Macho Man as a heel always worked in the old WWF days

JBL has done a damn good job of it during his promos. the last major promo he did standing in the ring alone just ripping on the fans and Cena a couple of weeks ago had the fans all over him big time. JBL = instant heel heat.

I dunno...they did get some laughs and applause during a couple of their intros w/Gertner that I can remember, if that counts. In the ring though, I agree.

I'd have to second JBL. As much as it pains me to see him holding WWE Championship, I love his character. He's the kind of guy you'd pay to see bleed and get his ass kicked.

 

Some other legitimate heels:

 

The Honky Tonk Man - One of the best cowardly heel champions ever.

 

Roddy Piper - During his initial feud with Hogan, this guy had heat like no one else.

 

Goldust - This role was played to perfection by Dustin. Before they stupidly turned Goldust face, he was hated by nearly everyone.

 

"Exotic" Adrian Street - The precursor to many other effeminant gimmicks, but no one did it better than Street (except maybe Gorgeous George).

 

Raven - This is certainly debatable, but during his initial heel run in ECW, he was literally irredeemable. He regularly beat up a guy who idolized him, he was sleeping with a girl he had hated years before, and he even stole a man's son.
