jwpeer 0 Report post Posted October 21, 2005 Barkley was on Leno last night apparently, and here's what he had to say: - Charles Barkley offered the most interesting and authoritative take yet supporting the NBA dress code. Here's the money quote from Leno on Wednesday night: "Young black kids dress like NBA players. Unfortunately, they don't get paid like NBA players. So when they go out in the real world, what they wear is held against them. "See, these players make $10 million to $15 million a year, so nobody cares how they dress. But regular black kids go out into the real world and how they dress is held against them. "If a well-dressed white kid and a black kid wearing a do-rag and throwback jersey came to me in a job interview, I'd hire the white kid. That's reality. That's the No. 1 reason I support the dress code." -
Ripper 0 Report post Posted October 21, 2005 Who the fuck goes on a job interview with a do-rag and a throwback on? When someone has been rich for so long I think they go a little out of touch with reality.
Big Ol' Smitty 0 Report post Posted October 21, 2005 actors represent themselves, not a multi-million dollar company... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> NBA players also have to market themselves. AI's image has worked out quite well for him financially (shoe deals, video game covers, etc.), and he is one the most popular players in the league, consistently selling out the arena in Philly despite being on a pretty mediocre team. I think if, say, in the 80s, Larry Bird had showed up to games wearing t-shirt, jeans, and work boots (I don't know what he did wear) the media and fans would have fawned over it, like "hey look at this regular, average Joe...he's so *blue collar*!" Just like they fawned over how we worked on a garbage truck. But Stern has to market toward where the money is. And the money is with all of the surly old curmudgeons who are afraid of baggy jeans. Stern already tried to market a "hip-hop" league and I guess that was unsuccesful. Here's some more background on this image turnaround: 6 Jun 2005 Sporting News The NBA has hired the firm of Matthew Dowd to help the league reach new customers. Dowd was the message and strategy man for George W. Bush's re-election campaign in 2004 http://www.sportingnews.com/experts/sean-d...y/20050606.html
The Czech Republic 0 Report post Posted October 21, 2005 Here's a bunch of player comments on the dress code. Tim Duncan is really hurting his reputation as a good leader by threatening to pout in the locker room instead of supporting his team, just because he has to wear a dress shirt. Brett Favre 0 Report post Posted October 21, 2005 Knicks president Isiah Thomas instituted a dress code upon arrival nearly two years ago. Players are expected to wear a suit and tie on game night whether at home or away. Anyone dressed inappropriately for a charter flight is expected to find another way to the game. So far, nobody's violated the edict. "It's part of life," Knicks rookie Nate Robinson said. "If you work for Boeing, you gotta wear a suit. I know a lot of guys around the league are kind of like, 'Why can't we wear what we want to wear because it's who we are?' But there are rules." Stephon Marbury kick-started the wardrobes of all three rookies here. The veteran point guard purchased 10 suits for each of them. "I got one today, it's pretty hot," Robinson said. "I never owned a suit in my life and now I got 10, so I feel like a professional when I come to work. It's kind of fun."
Dangerous A 0 Report post Posted October 21, 2005 The Heat have also had a mandatory dress code before this one was implemented. Seems like teams that have supposed "old school" guys in the front office like Isiah Thomas and Pat Riley were already ahead of the game as opposed to the "new school" types like Mark Cuban and the Maloofs, who have been vocal against the dress code. Guest Vitamin X Report post Posted October 21, 2005 "The players have been dressing in prison garb the last five or six years. All the stuff that goes on, it's like gangster, thuggery stuff. It's time. It's been time to do that. But one must remember where one came from. I was wearing bib overalls when I was a player one time. But I wasn't going to the games or events in them. -- Lakers head coach Phil Jackson, quoted in the Oct. 19 San Gabriel Valley Tribune ONE MUST REMEMBER WHERE ONE CAME FROM! Sass 0 Report post Posted October 22, 2005 Funny enough, Kobe Bryant actually said he was in favor of the dress code. "We're talking about *clothes* here people, it shouldn't be a big deal." I agree. Ripper, you've got good intentions with your arguments but Charles Barkley really did a good job on the Leno Show of explaining why the dress code shouldn't be made a big deal out of and how many of today's young players have no perspective about the NBA's past. It was a really good argument. Don't be a bitch though and quit posting here because some people disagreed with you about this deal. Please, don't. You're one of the NBA guru's here whose posts I always enjoy reading since they're normally spot on about the players on teams. Carry on.

Ripper 0 Report post Posted October 22, 2005 GOddamn. When the hell did I say I was going to stop posting anywhere. I pretty much ONLY post here. And mike...seriously...that is ONE of the most hypocritical post I have read in a while. *scans CE folder for recent MikeSC post* In two weeks, the season will start, and there will actually be something of substance to talk about. Right now, this is the most important thing going on in the NBA. its preseason for christ sake. And that was nice of Marbury to buy each of the rookies 10 suits. You all can call me delusional all you want, but spending almost a 1/4th of your yearly income ONLY on clothes for work (not counting the rest of your clothes mind you) would hurt, no matter what you do for a living. And Barkley, while he was making good points on Leno and has been a vocal advocate for a dress code before any of this was instituted, still once again displayed how out of touch he was with realty, much like most rich people. I still like the guy, same as I still like Bill Cosby, but both of them were talking out of their asses there.

From now on, NO MORE MUSIC IN ADS OR DURING BREAKS IN PLAY! For the ads, it'll be someone dribbling a ball for 15 seconds with a simple (not flashy) "NBA returns 11-1." Hogan Made Wrestling 0 Report post Posted October 22, 2005 I think a good retaliation for this would be for rappers to start wearing suits and following the "NBA dress code" in their videos. Maybe a good concept for a video would be a basketball game where everyone is playing in business clothes. Oh and you know, if the NBA doesn't want to be associated with the "hip-hop culture" maybe their teams should stop inviting rappers to try out every couple of years? Guest MikeSC Report post Posted October 23, 2005 Such as? That rich people can get away with dressing in ways that people struggling to get by cannot? That is simple reality. bobobrazil1984 0 Report post Posted October 23, 2005 Movign the topic back to the actual game of basketball, this brought a smile to my face... Alonzo Mourning got dunked on by Darko Millicic! hah! though the points got called back cause of someone else's foul... it's still awesome. millicic is actually producing in the preseason, having been given minutes (or maybe its just cuz brown is gone and he has confidence i dunno, the whole bench has been lighting it up. maybe its just preseason) Also, and this is a 2ndhand report i didnt see it so take it as you will, but i've heard that whenever Walker (antoine) gets the ball, he kinda "goes into business for himself"trying to find his own shot. Hey Antonie, that's exactly what your team doesn't need (can you tell i'm not a believer in the new Heat *yet*? I would pick last year's Heat over this year's if they were going head to head)
Ripper 0 Report post Posted October 24, 2005 I have said this constantly. Last years Heat thrived because Dwayne Wade had the ball in his hands 90% of the time. you add real point guards to that team and they take away their biggest strength. They will have to make trades by midseason to have this team nearly as effective.

Your best bet for bargains is to look for players with terrific stats per minute who haven't gotten regular playing time, but will or might.
